When you hear the "we need to protect civilian seafarers from attack by these barbarians engaging in piracy" argument, it's worth noting how many have been killed since ships in Red Sea started being targeted to make this wave of bombing a necessity. None.

Meanwhile, the whole reason ships heading for Israel are being targeted in the first place, 250 people are being killed every day in Gaza. Can't wait to see how Genocide Joe is going to protect those civilians!

And what is the reason the number of sailors killed is zero?  Because the Houtis are careful?

Why do ships divert around Africa?, If they are not sailing to Israel, they are safe, right?

No, you're right, what I really want is hundreds of already starving people blown to bits by nightly carpet bombing.

Well that's  a silly want.  You obviously do not understand 'carpet bombing'.

So what should the evil West do?  Ignore everything, ask the Houtis not to commit 'war crimes'?

My thoughts from the Politics thread...

    It's fuckin vile.

Instead of mediation, peace talks and aid, bomb the f**k out of Yemen.

Heaven forbid they should temporarily send ships filled with Chinese tat and Oil that nobody desperately needs round the Horn of Africa Instead.

Jumped at the first chance they got to be Saudi's puppets.

Blackford can f**k off too. Threat to shipping? f**k off you c**t, no more than bad weather is a threat to shipping. Did they hang the Captain of the Ever Given in 2021 and assassinate their family?

You want America to have mediation and peace talks with the people whose official slogan is "God is great, Death to America, Death to Israel, Curse on the Jews, Victory to Islam."? A people who are dabbling in slavery and firing weapons at civilians simply because they are working on ships.

    Aye, good luck with that!

Again, if someone could put me right here I’d appreciate it - I haven’t lived in the UK for a decade, but I did hear of the SNP introducing a ‘hate crime’ or ‘hate speech’ bill where lurid claims were made that if you said something defamatory in the confines of your own home you’d be carted off to re-education camp. I haven’t read of that happening.

Because the 'hate speech bill' is not being enforced yet.

The anti-sectarian law did come into being but got binned. Because it was a bit pish.

So, maybe some folks have doubts because of two previous pish 'hate' laws?

On the contrary, I think it would clip the wings of any far right party.  Parties that are supposedly on the left would win more often or at least together would win more often.

At the moment the Tories are so frightened of Farage they do what he wants without him having any MPs at all.

I think it is FTFP that makes the UK look more right wing than it really is.

Was there not an election where UKIP got more votes than SNP and got 50 less MPs, or something?    Sometimes it works.

  6. A survey by the Gaza Palestinians showing some complexity of opinions.

    https://www.awrad.org/files/server/polls/polls2023/Public Opinion Poll - Gaza War 2023 - Tables of Results.pdf

    Some selected results.

    • Over 85% reject co-existence with Israel
    • 75% support the October 7th assault/massacre/invasion
    • 13.6%  support a Hamas only  run government
    • 88% state Hamas military wing plays a positive role
    • Over three quarters have a negative view of all Arab neighbours
    • Over 70% expect 'Palestine' to win

Dishonest from the policewoman. Her reaction (felt insulted to be compared to a lesbian) was homophobic not the comment.

Sshhh, because I suppose calling her 'lesbian nana' is a 'hate crime'.

She wasn't insulted at being called 'nana' then?

Any P&Bers in Rutherhlen and Hamilton West going to sign?

I see that Wings was up in arms about The National pushing this because he thinks that a Unionist is a shoe in to get elected if there is a by election.  I’m sure I also saw Neale Hanvey, one of the two Alba MPs, speak against it, he may have voted against it as well. Interesting and perhaps suggests that Alba might not stand in the seat and potentially drain SNP votes.

    Yes.

I know a few who will not vote SNP simply because, if SNP win, they will take it as a vote of confidence and will keep doing what they're doing.

  9. Well, I know more than one person who voted SNP last time and will vote Labour in this by-election simply because if SNP win, the current Scottish Goverment will think that are currently on the right track. A loss, and they might ask themselves why.

What's crazy is that this debate was lost years ago, and the recent GRR legislation only served to show how utterly bonkers the opposition was.

This 'debate' is only starting and will only finish when, as a society, we can agree on how trans gender people can become fully accepted and fully productive members of that society.

  11. I know people would have avoided Channel 4's, Gender Wars, probably because it did not use the word 'Nazi' enough, but if we really want to resolve it, get Katy Jon Went (Guardian link) on TV more. A trans woman who spoke more sense in 3 minutes than some 'activists' in a lifetime. Someone who definitely was not a 'if you do not believe in everything I do, you are one of them'.

That's not a demand they are making. The reason your side of the argument is unable to gain any purchase in debates anywhere in the UK is because you cannot give a good reason other than the fact you dislike the idea of trangrender people in general. The ick factor.

What part of the very numerous nuances within you side of the 'argument' do you mean? Here are a few. There are many more.

Some people (then called nazis, terfs and bigots) were concerned about Tavistock, England's Gender Indentity Development Services clinic.  Who were recently caught lying in court about the influence of Mermaids (Telegraph link) CEO Susie Green. Which looks like more evidence that vulnerable people were designated 'trans', with potential drugs prescribed and surgery, without the correct support.   A possible huge medical scandal that people were afraid to highlight and whistleblow for fear of being targeted by the twitter warriors as Terfs or bigots.

Some women (a protected category) want to feel safe in their own space.  Which got a load of 'genital inspectors in toilets' comments until everyone suddenly realised that this would also mean that they'd send a rapist to a womans prisons. A rapist to a womans prison!

And talking about women, can you not see how it looks that is OK for a 16 year old to have the intelligence to work out that are the opposite of their birth sex but it takes until 25 for a man's brain to decide rape is wrong?   Community service for rape!  STV link

If you can change gender, can you change race? Did you fully support or only half supported Oli London (wiki link) when he became a non-binary Korean?

I know we had a post recently about it not being too unfair to be a 20 year old man, now woman, competing against women.  There are many examples of it happening but how about Alana McLaughlin. US special forces, began transitioning 2010, and had her first MMA fight a couple of years ago. Alana won. Is that what is meant by equality?

For "the dictionary companies caved" read; they updated themselves, as they are wont to do. Regularly.

New words list March 2022 | Oxford English Dictionary (oed.com)

Its almost as if a dictionary is a descriptive list of words and meanings in common usage and the only thing forcing them to update is people using and accepting the terms.

Oh and from that link i can show you this:

    gender critical adj.
    (a) critical of traditional beliefs about gender, esp. based on the perspective of gender feminism (gender feminism n.);

    (b) critical of the concept of gender identity, or the belief that gender identity outweighs or is more significant than biological sex.

That 2nd definition, only added in 2018.

It looks like some people made their mind up, the when things get pointed out, they bend and change the rules/evidence to suit.

In the meantime, here is a possible solution suggested at some demo yesterday. Is it possible that some people on both sides have extreme views?.

It wasn't so much against you

The entire subject is an absolute yawnfest and effects an infinitesimal element of society

Can't understand why so much debate is afforded to it

Unless it's media driven desperately trying to fill column inches for 24hr rolling news,  again!

    Fair enough.

I think, in the UK, the media drive for viewers or readers tends to give a higher proportion to the extremes, trying to get the water-cooler moments.

Anyway, has this made an appearance yet?

    Never an SNP voter.

Take your vote to the tories or tory labour and remain a 2nd class citizen in a supposed union.

Your rants will appeal to only a section of SNP supporters, a smaller section of floating voters and a minority of Scottish voters.

If you really cared for your cause, you'd be asking questions and trying to find out how you can 'convert' as many voters as possible but, there are Union Flag wavers on one side, people like you on the other with normality and common sense somewhere in the middle.

Bear in mind that for 1500 years the Scots first fought off the Romans and then the english.

Waving union flags is a relatively new thing in Scottish History gong back only a few hundred years.

Our one Alliance was historically with the French, 15,000 Scots sailed own the Clyde in 1259 heading fo a jamboree on the French Kings side.

Visit dear old Aubigny in the Loire to see the high esteem the Scots are held in there, lovely town.

TBH it's people like this that are putting me voting SNP.
