  1. Hey man, sorry I've not seen the whole document myself but I've just had a look on ljrh (the architects) website and the councils too and theres no sign of anything yet?
Guess DOYS is more itk than me and has better connections with the club, council or architects coz I'm guessing that's not been released yet...

I'd guess if there is a 30 page document it'll be made public on the 22nd though

Cheers. Thought that might be the case. Will need to get myself to the Ice Arena next Fri.

  2. Fair enough, I couldn't figure out what the capacity would be for the stadium for a gig. If we're talking 25k then it opens the door for some pretty big bands coming to Dundee.

Also the Scottish national football and rugby teams might be tempted to play some diddy opposition at any new ground. It's clear that the city is crying out for a decent sized, modern stadium.
  3. They don't get that. To them, results are everything.

And it's why they are struggling to sell out their allocation for the first derby in almost 15 months. It'd be interesting how they'd react to a third consecutive season in the seaside leagues. A lot less cars covered in cow dung; rapeseed and A92 roadkill clogging up the Cleppy on Championship match days I'd imagine.
  4. Sorry, slightly off topic- but has anyone seen the fucking state of this article: https://www.eveningtelegraph.co.uk/fp/no-dundee-derby-sees-dark-blues-coffers-take-hit/

What it omits to say is the The Rangers replaced Utd last season and Hamilton's win at the expense of Utd is mitigated somewhat by Hibs replacing ICT.

Contrast this with the Courier's article boasting about Utd's budget being largest in the Championship and their financial situation not being as desperate as "reported elsewhere" (presumably by themselves in response to the auditor's report). I don't believe DCT has an agenda against either team but they do themselves no favours with shite like this.

  5. Oh absolutely!

He was a brilliant war leader and a brilliant man of his time. Most of his politics did not appeal at all.

TO be fair on him though, I think you're taking your quote without context-I believe that at one point he was deliberately trying to stretch Lufwaffe reserves with a lot of dummy steelworks etc., not necessarliy in heavily populated areas, so that might have been the reference? I don't know the context either mind you.

I think it was upon hearing Dundee has been bombed. To be fair, I think Dundonains exaggerate his hatred for the city after his election defeat. He and his wife apparently enjoyed their time in the city, however, he refused freedom of the city! It's still a sore point and that's why, when ideas were being put forward for a person to build a statue in honour of, we have Desperate fkn Dan in the city centre!

  6. Currently working my way through Winston Churchill's 2nd World War diaries. Heavy going, and a lot of it is probably only of interest to tacticians and economists, but the man was truly fascinating.

Probably better than a biography, since you have to get the picture of a man not writing self consciously about what he was, more what happened and how he influenced it.

    A couple of classic quotes:

"I was criticised for the diplomatic nature of my declaration of war [on the Japanese Empire]. ...It costs nothing be be plite when you are going to kill a man..."

"[Vichy France] ...[britain] would have her neck wrung like a chicken within three weeks. Some chicken. Some neck."

    :D

    Another quote:

"..every bomb that falls on Scotland is one less for London"*

The guy was witty but a poor politician- he finished FOURTH in local elections in Dundee. In first place was Edwyn Scrymgeour- a prohibitionist and at that time Dundee had more pubs per person than anywhere in Britain! He also lost the general election after leading Britain to its finest hour.

*Not strictly what he said...replace "Scotland" with "Dundee"..but I figured using Scotland would sway more people to my way of thinking :P

  7. I watched a film made in the 70's called the Godfather the other night...wasnae bad.

Seriously though, along with Part II it's a great story and always has me, despite their length, glued to the screen, mesmerised. I think that's the secret to their success. The plot is irrelevant, I mean, you need some idea of what is going on, but the films are really just about the development of the "family" over the years. It's actually quite sad to see the decline of the Corleone's family unit (depite them being murdering mafia scum!). Both films complement each other with the flashbacks in Part II a nice touch (I bet De Niro was cursing Brandos stupid bloody accent from Part 1 that he then has to replicate in Part II!).

Part III quite rightly gets slagged, but then there was no need for this film and it had a lot to live up to and there is the time lag between II and III also which was always going to be difficult to overcome- Part III is a completely different kettle of fish. I still like it though, and it seems to ram home just how much, despite the wealth aquired, Pacino has failed to lead the Corleone family in an ever changing (under)world and live up to his father's teachings.

    10/10

PS apologies if the films are covered elsewhere in this post!

  8. a couple of chapters into the new Inspector Rebus book "The Naming of the Dead" by Ian Rankin...review to follow... :)

I, shamefully, only got into Rebus in April and am working my way through the books. I'm up to Black & Blue. This is where Rankin comes of age IMO- looking forward to the second half of the series.
