  1. I can't definitively say what he's done right or wrong but I do get annoyed that when McPake is about to make a crazy substitution there is usually no consultation with Nicholl. (It tends to be McPake and Mackay having a conversation)
I also wasn't happy with his comments in his only interview since joining us when he said:
'I'm just here to help him out. In the end, the decisions are on him. I can listen to James if he wants, but he has to get his wings and away he goes. I'll sit back and let him do it'
Just not very inspiring IMO. I've not a clue what goes on behind the scenes so as I say can't definitively say he's done anything wrong and this may well be the way McPake likes it, but as a fan I feel frustrated that he isn't more hands on in the way other assistants appear to be particularly when McPake needs all the touchline guidance he can get as his subs tend to be his major downfall in games.

We simply don't know how good his advice is or what his influence is, McPake is the man. I think looking into body language and analysing small comments is just projection tbh (if we were flying high there would be posts here about how his 'calm' manner is indicative of a cool elder statesman in control etc), it doesn't mean anything as we just don't have the context.

All aboard the 'bring Calvin Millar home' train, aye?

In all honesty, I wouldn't be too opposed to that in theory. He looked like he had some talent but was playing for a struggling team and it would have been a bit of a culture shock.

Wouldn't take him on loan again though, I'd want him to be our player.

Best: Appointing a 34 year old coach at Dundee as our new manager named James Yuil McLeanThis set in motion the extraordinary period in our history.

Worst: Stephen Thompson deciding he wanted to buy an Australian club (and failing at that) which meant the money he  put in to United became loans that had to repaid promptly and sold our best players replacing them with diddies.  This ushered in our worst period in modern times.

Did Thompson actually get much back? I just got the impression that the finances become quite tight and he just couldn't afford to keep up his same level of backing rather than clawing it back.

If the season is voided (with any remaining prize money split evenly), it follows from that that Inverness didn’t finish in second place - because you’re pretty much wiping out the standings.

I don’t see how it would be fair to say that nothing counts, but then - through reconstruction - start promoting teams based on where they finished in a season that you’ve just told everyone doesn’t count.

Not necessarily. The alternative was that promotion/relegation would not be awarded on the ppg basis but prize money would be. You could then easily say you are enlarging the top flight or second tier by x teams based on the ppg standings.

I don't think you are saying nothing counts, just that across the board, the conventional system of up/down was disproportionately harsh on some teams (i.e Hearts, Thistle, Falkirk etc) and disproportionately rewarding others (i.e. St Mirren, Raith, QotS etc). The short-term cash flow is important but this could be making an impact on teams that last many years when they still had football to play and a reasonable chance of improving their situation.

I would argue that if we did just take something resembling Livi's 14 plan for the top flight and promoted accordingly down the leagues, that would have been by far the least bad plan and been far less hurtful overall. Obviously, clubs will act in their self-interest but I think it is disappointing considering that it was really a minimal sacrifice and in 2013, we actually achieved a lot more with top flight clubs significantly reducing their cash share through the leagues and introducing the play-offs.

    I don't think that's true.

I've heard him be fiercely critical of Rangers on some issues, while very positive about them on others. Same with Hearts.

I can't really remember much about what he's said about other clubs. I don't write it down. But he's always struck me as reasonably fair.

Like most pundits, you're going to agree with some stuff he says and disagree with some stuff. Disagreeing with him doesn't mean he's biased or that he's a moron. I think there are others far more deserving of such titles. He's definitely above average in terms of journalists working on Scottish football.

He is a moron though. His whole game is to just be anti-establishment rather than actually provide any critical thinking. He gets by because, often, his stance is applicable for certain situations and mostly people want to hear simplified realities that play to their biases (i.e. everything in Scottish Football is a disaster and we're the worst at anything and it's because a cartel have fixed the referees and won't let us play in a infinitely big league with free beer, £5 tickets, reserve football and s-forms).

  6. Does Austin MacPhee roam in similar circles to Tommy Wright with the NI connection? I wonder if he might fancy a top job and would be the sort of gamble St Johnstone may make.

Despite Hearts being an absolute shitfest, I think that's more down to Levein losing the plot in the transfer market and all the long term deals for the wrong players. You don't really hear, publically at least, many people slating MacPhee for his involvement and he seemed to get a lot of credit for his coaching when thing were going well.

Hartley could be a good appointment and I think he could manage in the top flight again but after he absolutely lost the plot with his recruitment at Falkirk, I wouldn't imagine chairman would trust him. Hartley-ball played well was brilliant but there was just no consistency in it, he was actually becoming more pragmatic but his squad balance was atrocious with hundreds of lightweight attacking mids.

  7. It is more sophisticated than a Junk folder but really not much. Instead of your email provider simply automatically redirecting to junk, a third party app quarantines unusual or suspicious emails and then sends the intended recipient an email saying “do you want to block, release or permit this sender” or similar.
It’s an additional line of defence against corporate organisations and the like inadvertently getting ravaged by a scam/virus etc.
And an additional line of defence against read receipts.

I really can't recall David Hutton being too bad for us. I'm pretty sure I was sad to see him go. He made an absolute howler for us in the Challenge Cup Final but apart from that he'd be in the decent category for us.

Robbie McCrorie is probably the best we've had in recent times. Our downward spiral this (last) season coincided with his departure. It highlighted what a good goalkeeper does and it isn't all about saving shots. The guy has a big future in the game and I really hope he leaves The Rangers so I can fully support him

Worst - Callum Antel or Kris Roberston/Robinson. Can't even mind his name, but he was terrible. Barry John Corr was shite as well but he was clearly a confidence 'keeper and when sections of the support booed when his name was read from the teamsheet, I really don't think he was ever going to do well for us.

That Robinson boy was something else. I do remember a few games where he seemed impossible to beat though, just really looked like someone who shouldn't have ever trained as a 'keeper.

Barry John Corr had a couple of great games against Dundee for yourselves and Stranraer. Remember thinking he was one of the better 'keepers in the league (him and McEwan for Hamilton) and yet he seemed to disappear. Did he just not have the head for it?

It's an absolute shocker that Alex Rae deemed Craig Samson a superior keeper to Ludovic Roy. I've mentioned before that's what inspired my username, but I genuinely believe we might have pipped Hamilton to the league title if it were not for Samson's ridiculous mistakes.

Twice that season he dallied on the ball too long and booted it off a player and into his own net.

Also, put in a horrendous performance against QotS at home in a game we were beaten 2-3. Colin McMenamin's debut.

Ludo was one of the most consistent 'keepers I remember at Dundee. There was definitely a couple of mistakes but compared to everyone else, I really don't remember many, I think he's probably a bit unfortunate to have not played at a higher level when you see someone like Samson having made a good career for himself. Also he seemed to get injured at bad times of the season and that was the rationale Rae used to play Samson. For us, the stars aligned for us to re-sign Rab but otherwise I don't think we'd have needed to urgently act on that position.

I similarly thought Bullock was quite good for us. Again though, he wasn't getting ahead of his competition (although he played around half a season with Rab injured) but never really felt like he had many mistakes in him, despite the reputation he seems to have elsewhere. There were some games I remember him being really good at and I think he won league POTM and a fair few MOTM awards at Dens. He seems to have pissed off a lot of people in football though and had his whole thing of the 'f**k the dee' top a week or so after leaving the club.

I think the "four Old Firm games" thing is on pretty dodgy ground, if it exists at all, because at the start of a given season only three are guaranteed.

This means the SPFL has a financial incentive to ensure that two teams finish in the top 6, because either they would be in breach of contract for not "delivering" the fourth game, or there is a penalty clause already built in. They also have a further financial incentive to ensure both teams are in the same league for the duration of the contract, otherwise you don't even get the "guaranteed" three - hence the panic in 2012.

I think the executives have mispoken a little bit, I don't think it'll be an official rule in the contract specifying the OF games but there will definitely be something in there about changing the structure of the league and that voiding the contract - that would change the value to the broadcasters so be perfectly reasonable to have in there from their perspective.

Not really sure what can really be done apart from just asking what the adjusted rate would be for another proposition. Don't recall seeing what the change in value was in 2012.

  11. As much as Dundee are pushing for constructive, concrete discussions on reconstruction, when a motion is put to the premiership clubs it won't pass because a vote of 11-1 is required

14 team top flight can pass IMO.

It would likely be structured in a way that gives the top 6 or 8 an even split in terms of home/away games with the old firm coming twice. Top of the split can live with that.

Bottom sides will have a better chance of retaining their top flight status. Maybe a bit of diluted prize money but the broadcasting deal preserved with 4 OF games.

I don't think anyone will be singing and dancing about it but I think it can break the impasse and pass.
  12. Maybe, but it sounds like you'll accept this proposal if the SPFL promise to have a reconstruction vote.
A reconstruction vote that would require 11 top flight sides backing it. Rangers and Hearts wouldnt out of our spite

Hearts are relegated without reconstruction, they aren't going to be the veto if this is the way out for them.
  13. There are no high profile friendlies against Premiership teams, by which I mean few Dundee fans (or indeed fans of most other clubs) would see any friendly against a Premiership team as high profile or indeed interesting in any way.
I suspect said friendly would just be a more palatable way of giving them cash for their vote, although I'm not sure who it's meant to fool, or why anyone needs fooling as there's nothing wrong with Dundee accepting an offer of cash for their vote. I suspect many other chairmen wish they'd thought of it (if that is what happens mind).
In all honesty, it reads like total bullshit to me.

Rangers are desperate to muddy the waters by any means possible. They want one scenario of null and void and they need to shitfest to get that. Even if this vote is passed alongside reconstruction etc, they'll use claims of corruption as a grievance for years. They'll be making documentaries about the 'illegitimate title' years from now.

  14. The unfairest part of this is enforced relegation, Where clubs still have a realistic chance to stay up. This shouldn't happen, as funny as that would be.
Ayr haven't been out of the play-off places all season and I haven't heard one Ayr fan complain about us missing the chance to go up through the play-off. The fact that Dundee and Inverness have potentially blocked this is bizarre. Unless real reconstruction is on the table, there is no option but to accept this. There has been no details leaked of offers of increasing leagues so we can assume that isn't happening.
I can only assume that there are a few board members at clubs not paying attention to the news.

The thing is, this ideal of it being an ultimatum and only option doesn't really seem credible at this stage.

It may well be the thing that passes but the money is there in theory and whilst some clubs may be harder up than others, there's nothing tangible that suggests that the disruption to cash flow is going to sink anyone at this stage. If it was more urgent than that, I'd be hoping clubs would have been screaming from the rooftops weeks ago and making very clear steps to get money in. Whilst there's been an element of some clubs airing their concerns, it has been fairly tepid.

The clubs own the organisation and the money is (or anticipated to be) in the bank. Suggesting there is only one single mechanism for that to he released is blatantly nonsense.

Having a bit more time to seriously draft up a couple of other options and evaluate the interest in them isn't reckless.
  15. What would Dundee/Nelms have to gain from not voting just now? I can see why ICT would with the chat of a 14 team top flight, but not Dundee.
Thats a genuine question, as it'll presumably come across as snarky since its me saying it.

Well if you are trying to argue for something alternative, it maybe wins a bit of good faith in the discussions if you at least give the illusion of being open to return to this plan and not torpedo it properly, especially with the legal issues Rangers resolution run into. Skeptical of the whole reporting on the vote tally anyway, the press are running in circles.

I think Dundee's interests in this are focused on getting into the top flight. If Hearts come down, that's a b*****d to compete against next term, would feel hopeful we could win the league if St Mirren went down but Hearts would blow us out the water and I think they'd get their house in order like last time. United staying down isn't ideal either from that perspective but I think the way both teams form has went would maybe give hope that it'd be more competitive and of course it gives a couple of big gates and it's quite funny.

If the top flight is expanded, even if it excludes us and it is just for one season, it increases the chances of getting into it (depending on how it is drafted) eventually.
  16. Pretty much my thoughts.
Top flight sides were promised a record slice of a record sized pie next season, combined with reduced income this season, means I can't see them voting for it.
As a one off thing though with extra relegation to return to normal the term after, the cost won't be massive.

I can see this happening tbh. Board fucking about promising to talk about this if the initial proposal goes through first but the teams voting against will hold firm and this will be the compromise.
  17. 2 minutes ago, RossBFaeDundee said:

Part of my logic would be the fact that you drop from 5th to 6th due to PPG deciding final league positions, decreasing the money and perhaps encouraging the club to wait it out a wee bit longer. Personally think it's a longshot this vote doesn't pass (feckin' shite and all that), but the Pars would possibly be on the 'no' spectrum with play-offs and less money through how they're deciding it.

In all honesty, I see this entirely differently, I'd be quite surprised if it passes. I think there will quite easily be vetoes in 2/3 leagues and possibly all of them, the carrot being waved of releasing funds will be sorted one way or another without going through this mechanism (just as Rangers have implied).

This happened in 2012 with Rangers readmission to the league system then the 2013 talks on reconstruction. The board come up with a proposal which is touted publicly as being the 'only' path possible and then a few owners go apeshit and then the clubs end up drafting something different. I think this is just the starting pistol to try and force something to happen.

Unless your club is in a relegation position then you're going to vote this through.

Clubs will be desperate for the end of season payments too.

No brainer to vote for it

The money doesn't magically vanish if it isn't voted for. As much as people like throwing shit at the board, the clubs are the members with the power, as was evidenced during the Rangers debacle.

  19. 9 minutes ago, RossBFaeDundee said:

A vote is to be held. If passed, United will be promoted and Partick will be relegated, with play-offs cancelled. Raith will be promoted for next season, but Hearts won't be relegated yet until the SPFL board decide the Premiership cannot continue.

    https://spfl.co.uk/news/spfl-clubs-to-vote-on-curtailment-of-ladbrokes-s

The justification for holding back on the top flight to me seems nonsense, if you are passing the resolution for three of the divisions, then surely that must be compatible with what happens in the top flight. If the top flight was to finish, then why can't the teams in contention for top flight football get their opportunity to do that? I don't give a shit about the start of the League Cup next term.

Also the line regarding reconstruction, 'you are relegated with a game in hand over your biggest rivals but give us another few days and we'll maybe sort out some sort of compromise and get a supermajority of clubs in favour of something that benefits you'.
