This is a very fortuitous fixture.  A visit from one of the division's best supported teams on a dreich mid-February night, being played on a moto-cross surface with the outcome being of importance to, well, no-one really.  Bring.  It.  On.

Where else would you want to be tonight?

Mackay is rattled. He’s been hiding for a while and now he’s been called out he’s resorting to these defence tactics.

Out of interest, how many meetings with the Trust have been instigated by Dr Shipman?

    Probably 4 or 5.

The trust agreed to have regular meetings with the club board whilst the position of trust director on the club board remained vacant.

  3. Given a vacuum of leadership from the club board and the ongoing efforts of our owners, a strong supporters trust is as important now as it's ever been. We need a strong and united support as a means of challenging both the running of the club and the owner's plans for development of the land surrounding the stadium. The Holyrood debate over an independent regulator for football is welcome and such a body may well help the next potential crisis club, but it also highlights the failures of our football authorities to protect member clubs from people who do not put the interests of football clubs or supporters to the forefront.

I understand standing by Young, he's a young player with potential and if he realises that could earn us some money. However, it's a gamble given the injury he has picked up this year.

Like others I'm more frustrated that Farrell seems to have full backing of the club board.

I  don't think backing is the right word.

I think he has free reign to do whatever he wants because the chairman doesnt have the knowledge or the bottle to say no. It's not that they're backing him - I don't think the club is capable of pushing back on him.

  5. One one hand there's an argument that sticking  by injured players is the right thing to do. Their injury issues will be impacting their non-football jobs as well. Agreeing another contract gives them a bit of certainty about their footballing future and the chance to plan for another season.

But being the nice guy and doing the right thing can bite you on the arse. We could be extending the contract of guys who will either never play for us again, or who will have been massively compromised by their injury.

Its not a risk I think we should be taking. Stick with them for as long as we have them and do the right thing whilst they're injured, but I don't think we should be taking massive gambles by offering extensions when we don't know how the players will be when they recover.

  6. I'd encourage all trust members to vote. I won't make any comment about either candidate as it would be inappropriate to do so. The membership has to vote for the person they think can best represent the trust at board level. What I will say is that whether we had 2 or 20 candidates, it takes a hell of a lot to be willing to take on a role like this and both candidates deserve a lot of respect for being willing to step up and represent the trust on the club's board.

  7. I believe that Rangers sent some ground staff down today to help with a bit of work.

As much as it's been mild today, the ground is probably still pretty solid. And that strip from the half way line to the away stand corner flag will be really solid as it gets minimal sunshine. Top inch or so might be soft, but it'll likely be frozen under that. Dump a lot of rain tonight/tomorrow morning onto that and it'll have nowhere to drain. Top layer and turf will just get even softer.

We'd have had to get covers down last weekend and to do some ground work during the day to make a significant difference. Need to hope that we get lucky and the pitch passes the inspection. Could argue that 1pm is a little early for a 5:30 kick off. Maybe a 3pm inspection would give the game a bit more chance. But unless they were able to do a ton of work in those 2 hours then it might not make much of a difference.

I reckon it's slightly worse than 50/50 tomorrow.

Also, by signing another centre back... do we assume we'll be lucky to see Durnan back this season? I don't understand why we would make this signing otherwise. I still don't think we needed another CB, even with Newbury being cup tied this weekend.

Has to be a big concern that what was supposed to be a couple of weeks has turned into a couple of months for Durnan. I don't think we're getting him back any time soon and having 3 central defenders at the club is an absolute must. Particularly when our current cover would be to move fullbacks inside. Not ideal, although we've got 2 options on the right with Carlo and Lynas. Big problem on the left with only having Shiels.

But it does leave our squad looking bloated. We've got numbers but perhaps not strength outside the starting 11.

And all linked together to form a pyramid.

The greatest modern fear of every club in the West.

There was no pyramid in 2012 funnily enough.

They might have working links, but they're 3 separate organisations.

The SPFL does not have any administrative control over the Highland League, the Lowland League or any of the tier 6 and below league bodies.

I was down the stadium today. The groundsman says the pitch is solid and he needs the temp to rise.

    Oh joy.

Trip to B&M to buy every leccy blanket in the shop? Plug them in, lay them out over the pitch and hope for the best?

All the way to Tier 10 in the West.

    A long long way down.

The SPFL covers only the top flight to  League Two.

The Lowland League is a separate league organisation.

The West of Scotland Football League is a separate league organisation again.

Surely we’d have no chance of Bevan.

He's still with Albion Rovers and they're not coming back up this season. I'm surprised somebody hasn't tried to get him back into League Two. Would Albion Rovers stand in his way if he wanted a move back to the senior leagues?

  13. I wouldn't be against Brown signing, but that's more due to a lack of faith in Div Wilson and the two Blairs. Fair play to Chucky for being honest with the club and telling us that he can't guarantee availability. Work has to come first for any player at our level. If he's going to be based up there then I wouldn't be shocked to see him turn out for a highland league team if he fancies continuing to play (Wick Academy would be an obvious option), but there's possibly a chance that he's not really enjoying his football and the work situation has forced him to make a decision he might already have been thinking about.

Obvious replacement if we could make it happen would be Joe Bevan. Bevan would be a cracking pick up for us. Young, can play wide or up front. Runs at folk with pace and can finish.

Thought we responded well to going a goal down. Players didn’t give up and Shiels could have equalised just before half-time had it not been for a last-ditch Bonnyrigg block. Newbury looks a good acquisition - composed and made some good tackles. Came out the traps at the start of the second half and a great block on the line from Martinuyk prevented us taking the lead. Fair play to Bonnyrigg - not pretty but they just never give up!

I thought we should have sacked Faz after the relegation from League 1 but credit where credit’s due - acted quickly to bring in Hogarth & Newbury (as much as I like Broun and Lynas, the former two are upgrades), and whatever was said at half-time clearly got the right reaction from the players. Still very much in the play-off mix.

  15. Farrell tends to do well in the first half of a season. But when teams work out his limited tactics, Farrell's Dumbarton sides have tended to collapse and struggle in the 2nd half of the season. We also tend to see players who start the season well fall really badly out of form.

He can't be our manager next season. Another season of Farrell in the dugout would potentially see the Dumbarton home gate collapse further. It's bad enough that we're probably stuck with him until May, but we can't go into another new season with Farrell in charge. I reckon fans would turn up at the stadium front door with torches and pitchforks to run him and the board out of town.

    Observations on “EDI”:

    1) The airport is taking the piss with gate assignments. They put a big Ryanair flight on 29, and then shoehorn a full-size BA flight next to it at 28. Then they drive both to the other end of the terminal to board. Two gate with full-size Airbuses trying to load while clambering all over each other at the far end of a corridor is bogus.

    2) Security is chaotic due to a very poor design to enter the lines.

    3) It’s full of morons who walk in to the lounge area from security and simply stop and stare at the departures board. When it says your gate won’t be posted for 30 minutes, go find a f**king seat!

    4) The paving around the walkways and such is, well, poor.

Gate assignments - thats not just an Edinburgh problem.

2022 flight from Frankfurt to Glasgow. Airport has the Glasgow and Manchester Lufthansa flights at the gates immediately next to each other. Glasgow is flying about 10 minutes earlier than Manchester. Airport has absolutely no queuing barriers set up and nobody keeping the Glasgow and Manchester passengers separate. Not ideal at the best of times. Worse when Lufthansa short haul fights almost never get an air bridge at Frankfurt and are usually bus out to the apron efforts.

  17. All depends on what you want your energy for.

Sportsmen eat complex carbohydrates hours before a game. Complex carbohydrates take a long time to break down into more simple carbohydrates that an athlete needs for useful energy at game time. The time for chicken and pasta? It's probably 3-4 hours before the match. Half time and full time? The body has used all of the simple carbohydrates it has available. You get a temporary increase in blood sugar levels as the body draws energy from various stored sources. You then get a blood sugar crash as all of the simple, quick access energy has been used.

Donuts before a game? Pointless as they do nothing to provide a sustained source of energy. They're a source of quick access sugar. Donuts after a game? A very sensible way to avoid a sharp drop in blood sugar levels following 90 minutes of football. Players need to avoid the blood sugar crash and by having a donut after the game, they're getting that quick energy fix to avoid a blood sugar drop.  Their evening meal will then replace the more complex carbohydrates in their system which will break down over time.

And yes, I did watch Cherry Healey running about on Inside The Factory at the weekend. But that doesnt make the explanation wrong.

  18. Having thought a bit more on us being rubbisher, today's performance was particularly disappointing.

Harry Broun is not a bad shot stopper. His acrobatic save late in the 2nd half was even quite impressive. But he is what he is - an inexperienced keeper who makes bad decisions, who isnt comfortable coming for crosses and who panics. You can work on his down sides. They'll improve with experience. But all of that takes time and a club chasing promotion is not a place for a rookie keeper to iron out his flaws. It's unfair on him and the players had a real go at him over the EF opener. That won't have helped his confidence any.

I worried when Crighton looked like he was struggling towards the end of the first half. He looked like he'd be replaced at half time as his movement was really limited. I'm glad that he was able to play the remainder of the game, but it highlights just how little cover we've got at the back. I'm not convinced that we'll see Durnan any time soon and Crighton is our only proper centre half. Thats something that the club has to sort out immediately. Lynas didnt have a great game beside him and shares a lot of blame for that first goal, but he's an average right back or right side of a back 3 who is filling in as a centre half. Not really his natural position.

I thought Ryan Blair was terrible today. Very slack in possession. Very poor when EF came at us. He's scored a few goals from set pieces for us but never seems to be part of anything positive from open play. I thought Wilson struggled today too. We really didnt have much in midfield and we weren't getting much width from our fullbacks. Very disappointed that it took near enough 40 minutes to get a meaningful chance on goal.

Up front? The service to Ruth was poor. He tried his best but if there's no service then he can't do much. Same with Wallace. Felt they were marginalised for spells because we were just so poor going forward. 2nd half was an improvement and Ruth will rightly wonder why we didnt get a penalty, but we can't be relying on penalties to salvage something at home to East Fife.

Bringing on Declan Byrne to chase the game sums us up. We have so little on our bench it's unreal. Tony Wallace can be unhappy that he didn't start. He gives us a bit of something that we lacked for large spells today. But who do we have who can come on and give us something?

Credit to East Fife. They were organised. They were more aggressive closing down. They broke and attacked with a bit of pace. All things that we didn't do for long spells of that game today.

See if there is someone who's not going to be taking an additional ticket for the Rangers game and would feel generous enough to allow me to claim theirs as well then please let me know. Crazy days where there are 2 people asking to come with me to a Dumbarton game I know...

I'm not going to the Rangers game, so I'm not planning on buying any.

If they're on sale today before kick off then you can buy mine.
