  1. Played a lot more now but I'm getting a bit annoyed that it's too safe.

It seems I'vew been encoraged into buying a hauler and doing courier missions with the odd bit of trade and some exploration as I'm slowly moving towards Sol. There seems to be very little combat, even in anarchy systems and pretty much all the comabt missions seem to involve becomng a terrorist or pirate rather than a bounty hunter.

  2. I caved, it's cool as.

I didn't really like the combat in fronteir due to the relatavistic thing making it less fun.

This is clearly elite style combat.

So far I've done the majority of turorials and a couple of buletin board missions.

The only reason I'm here is 'cos I just had my first crash, but it's a beta so I can expect that.

So far my impresions are that the game is what it needs to be however (and this is only based on the one single crash) it clearly isn't stable enough yet.

For anyone who's played a lot more, any thargoids or tribbles?

The version of elite I played most was the C=64 one and I was one of the idiots who discovered the tribbles the hard way. I also have a cool memory of playing at my mates who had the slightly better version on the atari ST and he wanted to quit and reload as soon as the hyperspace went wrong and I ended up in thargoid space armed only with pulse lasers. We both learned from that one. I learned the St cversion was more difficult, he learned you really could take down an enemy fleet with mince weapons.

  3. Yeah it's not even particularly expensive in Coles. Paid over $4 for a pot noodle on a few occasions :-(

Do you actually buy them in the UK?

In melbourne I once bought an entire round of tennents super.

I wouldn't consider drinking that pish here.

  4. Alright gents, thanks for the input so far.
My plan of driving up the cost from Sydney to Brisbane has been scuppered basically because most places want an extraordinary amount of money for dropping off in a different place.
    Anyway, I've looking at this...
As a few of the places up the coast look decent and I'm in no real rush to reach Brisbane by the looks of things.
Does anyone have any advice and will it be valid on most trains? Oh aye and will I be able to rock up a day or two in advance and buy it for the same price?
    Cheers.

Get the bus to Byron or surfers, pull a local, get her to drive you to Brisbane. Easy.

I did greyhound from Byron to cairns which was great craic, was only one long leg involved and good way to meet people. I got full rail pass in cairns, got upgraded for trip to Sydney. Got to do Ghan up from Adelaide to Alice springs then trip to Ayers Rock. 4 days back from Perth to Sydney was an experience too, couldn't recommend it enough, I think I spent two weeks sleeping on trains altogether and it was fairly comfortable, I'm 6"3 too and the facilities in the basic car were great with plenty if seats in the restaurant, plenty if toilets and showers.

That pass will be fine for you. Loads of great places in between, Fraser Island a must, magnetic island was really good too. If you go to the kakuda rainforest trip from cairns there's a 'Scottish' restaurant, not very authentic but decent when you're homesick, even if you're not even Scottish like me.

I got the bus from Sydney to Byron and as I got on this couple were just staring at me big time. About half an hour into the drive I fell a tap on my shoulder and it's the bloke.

I'm sitting there thinking 'what have I done?' but it turns out all he wanted to know was where I got a bottle of Irn Bru from 'cos I'd somehow stuck both him and his Mrs into some kind of homesick trance by carrying ginger on the bus.

I felt kinda bad explaining that not only are there lots of shops selling 'british' goods to ex pats but the supermarkets sell the stuff too.

  5. Pretty damn good for a beta I have to say. It is leaps and bounds ahead of where Star Citizen is right now (which comes across as a giant cash extracting machine to me).

Like I said, still buggy as hell and not all features have been implemented but it is very playable and if you're a fan of the original or Frontier you'll love it. There's a massive update out next week (beta 3) so I suspect we'll see a bit more feature rich and polished experience.

Sounds like I'll have to cave and break my rule about never paying for a beta.

Although I would be worried about rollbacks when it eventually goes live.

Will you have to start again or will you be allowed to keep everything you earned in beta?

  6. It's a public beta and it's being openly talked about on Frontier Developments own forums. There's no NDA.

There's even countless videos of gampeplay on Youtube.

So assuming I'm an ignorant cockmunch, how's it looking right now?

  7. Eh? It's been in beta stage for ages. Currently version 2.06 with beta 3 due at the end of the month.

I assumed like most betas there would be an NDA barring you from talking about it and was kinda hoping that your post about the beta meant that it was about to be released.

Is it still only select missions which are available or are they now opening out the universe?

  8. They've "referenced" older Doctors a few times this series, last week when they were on the beach he was quoting old lines and that.

I enjoyed it too tbh. Plenty of intrigue and guessing to be had, and the plot kept you interested the whole way through. We've also got the question of who "Gus" is and why he's hunting the Doctor, while the longer the ignore this Heaven place the more intriguing it gets.

I don't think he saved everyone either, tbh. He seemed to be trying too hard to make a joke about leaving them all to die in a double bluff sort of way. This Doctor also seems to be put self preservation above all, can't believe he'd waste time risking himself for so many dying people.

He at least saved frank skinner.

As for 'heaven', a few deaths this week but apparently nobody ended up there.

  9. Getting a new laptop this week. I'm not an idiot but can't be bothered reading loads of shite about specs. Just needing for internet, some games like FM and Civ5 (Civ 6 when it comes out) and maybe a bit of MATLAB or CAD stuff.

After 10 minute search looking only at processor, memory and hard-drive I'm thinking about getting this - http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptops-netbooks/laptops/laptops/hp-pavilion-15-n268sa-15-6-laptop-black-silver-21862441-pdt.html

Would be willing to pay more for something obviously better but does anyone ken? Thanks.

It used to be easy to judge the spec of a computer. Now it just isn't.

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/ can tell you how fast processors are compared to each other.

For your design stuff, you'd need to check the specs on the software to see if the laptop is up to it.

By the sounds of it tho your most demanding thing will be civ.

Just remember the no1 rule of laptops. Your bollocks are on the outside to keep them cool. Don't cook them.

  10. Wow, that's class.

    • Awesomenauts
    • Blade Symphony
    • Company of Heroes 2
    • Don't Starve
    • Grid 2
    • Injustice
    • Killing Floor
    • Payday 2
    • Trine 2
    • XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Payday 2 is probably the highlight of those. I'd encourage anyone who hasn't played to have a go on the free weekend. Despite it being known as 'pro bag throwing simulator 2014 edition' it's actually a really good game.

  11. I'll have a hunt on my computer for the pics but some tenants in a flat in Gorgie (yes, Gorgie in Edinburgh) emailed me pictures of a big snake coming out of their toilet a few years back.

Turns out it was a corn snake - harmless enough but still a proper big snake.

    Gay lad, works in pharmaceuticals?

Either that or there may have been a spate of gorgie toilet invasions.
