  1. The chat in the pub tonight was that GJ wanted/wants to resign Riordan but after discussion with the DOF and Board he won't get his wish to sign him, JJ thinks he is bad news. , if true that's a bit rich after signing a sex offender.

The writing is on the wall for the present manager if he doesn't get a win next week against Berwick Rangers.

I was not there but bad result last night. However looking at some reports over last couple games things are hopefully coming together. Having tightened up defence we now just need to score goals

What ever happened with Riordan, looked like he was doing well and getting goals and assists when he came in last season, take it City have found a better player to replace him.

Yeah there's no doubt whatsoever that his presence is a barrier to a lot of people in Edinburgh popping along. This was something I mentioned to the board and was one of the main 'non-moral' reasons that was put up against his signing.

I won't be back, shame on the board and the manager, this was obviously a Jefferies signing and the board backed it and he (sex offender) has been forced on the manager and squad, imo he was being signed no matter what anyone said that is involved at the club, that includes the supporters.

The manager should have had a serious look at himself and thought what might this do to the morale of his squad and more importantly his job, if results don't start improving pretty soon he could find himself out of work, and I'll take a hunch and say if that was to happen then Jefferies will take over from GJ.

Good to see the £6 offer for Hearts and Hibs season ticket holders return this season, and with Spartans added on as well. I think if it's sold properly it could work really well.

It's all gone Pete Tong since the signing of the sex offender.

Can't see many Hibs fans coming to watch City.

    Hello chaps

Looks like I'll be at the game vs. Berwick on Saturday 26th August - any recommended pubs etc. pre/post game please?

    Thank you.

Take it the supporters club at Lochend has closed down since City have moved to Ainslie Park.

A lot of people seem to be treating it like Thomsons been the victim and he's 'served his time and done his punishment'.

That's all well and good until you take into account how it's affected the lives of all the young children and the families involved who will never ever be able to just move on. Not seen one mention of them yet.

Some may be emotionally scarred and humiliated for life, young kids who've been taken advantage of by a predator.

Now this guy is playing for the 3rd biggest club in the city they are from. No matter what you say about football just being a job or whatever there's no chance that this reaction would happen if he'd taken a job as a plumber or whatever. Bringing it all up again for the victims. Watching this guy get the privilege of playing professional football in their city's so called community club.

Can't believe some people are sticking up for this guy.

A kick in the teeth to the victims and family of the young girls.

As some of you know over the weekend I met with board members, management and playing staff to discuss Craig Thomson and put forward the view of those of us who are opposed to his signing. The meeting lasted almost 2 hours and I'll try and summarise it as best I can below:

First of all I would say that I do now believe the board did not come to this decision lightly. There has been a large amount of due diligence done and for all I don't want to put words in anyone's mouth the decision was made on the basis that first of all Craig Thomson is not a threat to children, that he is genuinely sorry for his actions and that he deserves a second chance at being a senior footballer having been heavily punished over the last 6 or so years.

Board members have visited Kelty games to gauge the crowd reaction to Craig Thomson as they were concerned about the atmosphere when he plays for us, but their belief is that as at Kelty it won't be as bad as people expect.

The players have been consulted and all of them are on board, all potential signings have been made aware of the situation.

The main sponsors have been consulted and are comfortable with the club's stance.

People within the club's youth department, contacts at Hibs and at Spartans have also been talked to and again are comfortable.

We did discuss the morals of signing someone with his record but to be quite honest their minds were clearly made up, although as I said I do believe it was at least a difficult decision for them.

In terms of the damage to the club's reputation they are aware that the adverse publicity will affect crowds. The belief is that the initial furore will die down and people will drift back, especially when City start winning games. Again they are saying this from a position that Craig Thomson deserves another chance at some sort of football career.

One thing that was very clear to me is that this is an ambitious club and that senior people at the club see Craig Thomson as a vital part of where they want to be.

From my point of view I think the lack of communication with fans when the signing leaked (almost a month ago) has been a huge issue (the club have said their hands were tied by him still being a Kelty player) and if we all get through this as City fans I think it's imperative we band together and create a formalised fan group. If we want our voices heard we need to be organised, I would be happy to work with anyone to discuss how this might work.

From a personal point of view I still believe it is the wrong decision and I told the board so. I fear they have gravely underestimated the reputational damage this will do to the club, Edinburgh City's fan base is small and boosted by casual observers and those who consider us their second team, the casual fan by their very nature is quick to walk away. Goodness me it's hard enough to get people along to games in the first place now. Of course some of the 'hardcore' are ready to walk away themselves and will not go quietly.

I tried to drive the point home that the club cannot control the narrative on this, Craig Thomson will forever be tarred as a child sex offender. There will be no nuance to this story, Edinburgh City will have signed a 'nonce', a 'beast' a 'paedo'. Irrespective of what members of the board feel about those terms, those are the terms that will be used. The club will be stained by those terms.

As for the moral question of whether a convicted sex offender should be allowed to resume a football career? Well that's a question that each of us have to answer for ourselves. My natural reaction is no, but as someone who believes in the rehabilitation of those who have erred I accept I am wide open to accusations of hypocrisy.

I've hated this last few weeks, I still don't know what I'll do when the season starts.

I am very much not the voice of the board and to be honest there are a few of them that really don't like me (in their defence I am an ars@hole) but I wanted to make sure I'd passed on what I was told. I hope it's answered some of your questions.

    Peace, love and empathy.

Cheers for that mate, My thoughts are the club have made a massive mistake in making this signing and it will backfire big time, the club think it will all blow over once they start winning games, what if they don't and child groomer is having a shocker in games due to the barrage of abuse he will get at every game, here's a wee thought, where will City be training through the week, if it is down in Pilton/Spartans, then a good chance some of the locals who have booked a pitch on training nights might just think to have words with him, recipe for disaster.

Not a worry for me now though, I won't be back.

Well the whole thing might be getting binned off mate fingers crossed. A lot of folk are ready to walk so let's hope they sack it off

I actually feel for Gary Jardine in all this. Bloke is in a catch 22 situation

Here's hoping bud, maybe City have realised what kind of bad publicity would come with a signing of a player who groomed young girls and the affect it could have on the club and fans.

Googled it and a report after his court case in June 2011 said he got fined £4k and put on the register for 5 years.

And he breached his conditions only a couple of years ago that seen him appear in court in 2016 for the offence, can't find out what the punishment was for him breaching his conditions though, possibility he had his 5 year extended or maybe just fined,

Not the type of person you would want around a family club like City though, or any club for that matter, he groomed kids FFS,

You can't say that until it's a stonewaller that the lad has signed. At the moment it's nothing more than fan speculation.

He is training with City with the view to signing with them. Why have City kept it quiet that he has been training with the club.

Article is from January 2016 so out of date?

How long is he on the sex offenders register for, 5 - 10 years or life. 2016 would suggest longer than 5 years from his conviction of grooming young girls, minors, the guys a f***ing beast and should be nowhere near signing for City.

  13. The then yam manager said this about paedo boy.

Manager Jim Jefferies left Thomson behind when the first-team squad flew to a pre-season camp in Italy at the weekend

The 60 year-old, in his second spell in charge at Tynecastle, is renowned as a players' manager and has a reputation for creating a good atmosphere in his dressing rooms.

He has been repulsed by Thomson’s behaviour, however, and can’t imagine how the player’s inclusion in any Hearts starting XI would have anything other than a negative impact on the team.

“I knew what the reaction would be and he can’t have any complaints because it was a bad, bad thing he did: one of the worst things it’s possible to do,” said Jefferies.

“He has made a grave error. It’s the ultimate taboo. It makes your heart sink. You don’t want your club to be associated with not just this but anything like it.

“You accept as a manager you’ll have to deal with problems along the road but I have to be honest and say I’ve never felt like this.

“We can’t allow it to become a bit of a sideshow which gets out of hand. I think he would be going into something he has never been prepared for. He might find it will be tough for him from now on.”

Lets hope City's Sporting Director (Jim Jefferies) still has the same thoughts about him.

I've been to games involving Arniston, Nitten and Kelty with my kids there knowing full well that Craig Thomson will be playing.

He was deemed at the time to not need any specific requirements to keep him away from children.

The biggest risk to my children at games he plays in is middle aged moron's in the crowd thinking it's acceptable to call someone a paedo c**t in front of children

This story would suggest he is still on the sex offenders register and still a threat.

I wasn't for a minute asking the club to come on here and announce anything. I first tried to contact the club about this on the 14th and have made multiple attempts since then. If I'm honest I don't expect a response, especially as it's not announced yet, but I wanted to make absolutely 100% sure the club was aware of my position.

Looks like they aren't listening to you, I enjoyed watching City last season and intended to be back this season with the Grandkids for more of the same, that won't be happening anymore, not while a known child groomer is playing for City.

Have the people running City really thought this through properly, what a huge mistake it will be for the club.

Not that I know of. He's under contract still until next year from what I've read(might be fact might not be)

He certainly isn't any of the ones on the grapevine that have rumoured to have left

Had heard he has left the club.

It seems as if quite a few contracts end on the 30th of this month so I'd imagine the club are waiting until then to announce some new signings (including Craig Thomson)

This 30th of the month nonsense is a load of crap, if his contract is at a end he can sign for anyone now.

That about sums it up really. I find it hard to believe that City are planning on making this signing.

City do not compete with Hibs or Hearts they are an alternative. They will attract a more studenty crowd, probably more left leaning on the whole, people who don't want all the crap that goes with top league football, and yes a few oddballs, every lower league club has their fair share! All of this was true of Meadowbank and having supported both Thistle and City I can see the similarities in the make up of the crowds. Yes it's 20 years on but the feel is similar, essentially that's what you get when you are a third team in a decent sized city, you get a different kind of supporter.

Some would say it is easier these days with social media, but let's face it in 21 years Meadowbank Thistle never went out of their way to attract a crowd or have any community links, and ultimately it left them susceptible to the demise that befell them, franchised out of existence. Credit to City they have started fantastically well on this front, the Lowland League following has probably trebled and we attract loads of neutrals each week. The club have been innovative with their reduced entry scheme for Hibs / Hearts season ticket holders has been a success and generally I think we are seen as a great additional SPFL offering in Edinburgh by the less tribal folks at Easter Rd and Tynecastle.

City have one big advantage over Thistle in that they have an established youth set up, with many players progressing through the ranks to play for the senior team. We have community links and you can see those running the club trying to further those links through charity partnerships with the likes of Bernardos. All great stuff, all the right things to do. We should be viewed at this stage of our development as let's face it a cuddly, non-threatening alternative to Hearts and Hibs that's how we grow, that's how we get bigger.

That's why I find this touted signing completely insane. I only know the facts as to what he has been convicted of, I don't know him as the person he is now, but to be honest I don't need to know. What I do know is that City will set themselves back, losing hard earned support and limiting the supporter growth and do damage to their image and reputation at the very least in the short term, but probably long term too. You immediately lose your 'cuddly' status and with it so much goodwill.

It has already been alluded to earlier in this thread but imagine the atmosphere at our games next season, elements of the away support I'm pretty sure will be very vocal on the matter. I'm sure the player has become quite thick skinned god knows the abuse he has taken at junior grounds, but do we want that at our games? Is that the kind of atmosphere that will attract bigger crowds, more families? Don't think this will be a short term thing that will blow over after a few games. You change the whole atmosphere at games as long as he is a signed player.

There are financial implications too, I'm not sure how the existing sponsors will feel, but one thing for sure is that it will have a detrimental impact on future opportunities. How does it fit with the community feel of the club, how do the youth teams view this proposed signing, indeed wtf do Barnardos think?

Why risk so much all for a bit of supposed 'quality' on the football pitch. If he was that good, some rancid team further up the leagues would have snapped him up by now, so I don't buy it. Maybe, just maybe, he is that good, but then ask yourself why no-one else has signed him, what does that make your club? I'm all for being different, in fact it's essential for City, just not this kind of different. Rant over.

Well said my man, or lady.  :thumsup2

Where did I say he wasn't good at football?

Fwiw i hardly think he'll make that much of a difference to City, obviously probably one of the best options you guys could get for that area of the park but he's a right back who's been junior for 6 year. It's not even like it's the same as Goodwillie who should really bang in plenty for Clyde.

Read what he did and I don't know why you'd want someone like that at your football club.

If he was any good why haven't other clubs tried to sign him, simple, he is a wrong un, groomed kids and not a club will touch him because of the bad publicity that would coming with signing a known paedo, City would be mad to have anything to do with him, and how would it go down with the City players, not very well would be my guess, I doubt many of the players would be keen to have him in the team.
