  1. If you check, you'll find that not only is a stadium classed as a bad neighbour, floodlit pitches with or without stadia, are too.

But really this is not my fault. I'm only pointing out that the bad neighbour thing, in terms of planning applications, that many here have said is a trumped up figment, is in fact the case.

I think we should all drop the bad neighbour theme. If there were no residences within a mile of the Bet Butler it wouldn't matter a damn as Brabco has never had any intention of spending money or applying for planning permission there. Their sole purpose is in flogging that site and turning some sort of profit. Everyone should begin to focus on what they will do if they can't manage that

  2. A reminder that the Sonstrust's general meeting to discuss the proposals for a stadium relocation and redevelopment takes place tomorrow night, Wednesday 26th November, starting at 7pm, at the Abbotsford Hotel. The club chairman and chief executive will be there, along with the project planning consultant who will outline the plans. There will be a Q&A. All welcome! http://sonstrust.wordpress.com/2014/11/25/reminder-general-meeting-tomorrow-weds-26th-7pm/

My sister-in-law's daughter is getting married in 2016 and she was asking if there are likely to be sample wedding menus available tomorrow ??

  3. If we can take the emotions surrounding Brabco out of the equation for a bit, it seems to me that finance may be a major problem in all of this.

Dumbarton has seen an explosion in new house building over the last decade, and you have to wonder if there is a market for even more. Presumably if there was then someone would have developed the other side of Castle Road.

Apparently several of the Turnberry flats on Castlegreen Street are now on the rental market as the departing owners could not sell them, and that's at a time when interest rates have been at a historical low, rates which are very likely to be moving upwards again just as Brabco/Denny Homes are likely to be laying bricks.

So, the key point. If the BBS site was worth say £4M in 2007, there is absolutely no certainty it will be worth £2.5M in 2015; it will be worth exactly and only what the market is willing to pay. All of which matters, as that figure might not even cover Phase One, never mind Brabco skimming a wedge.

  4. If the club was handed over to the trust then it would have to be fully self financing presumably. There would be no owner in the background to tide us over when we had a couple of poor months income wise. Is that really something that the trust could take on?

Why not ? Community ownership need not mean big kids let loose with a train set; there is a broad skill set in both the Trust and wider community, and perhaps the need to remain solvent would direct DFC down a more customer-focused route. Does anyone know just what Brabco are contributing financially at present ?

  5. Other than house-building Dumbarton and the Vale don't figure highly on any measures of economic regeneration, and I'm really struggling to think who ar what would be attracted to the area in question. Sure it's just off the A82 which is a tourist route, but we already have hotels and travel lodges with another currently in construction in Balloch, a more pleasant part of the world.

The only thing I can think of would be an outlets type of thing but even that that seems one hell of an ask. I'm figuring the economic numbers wouldn't stack up for a golf range or a garden centre, so what does anyone on here think could realistically pump prime capital into DFC being able to achieve a 4000 capacity football ground ??

  6. I'm a new poster and long time Dumbarton supporter. Wilf's comments about owners inevitably seeking to realise the asset may be true in the absence of fan ownership. What supporters are, however, entitled to expect is transparency, particularly in dealings as significant as ground relocation. Questions around the capital costs of the current proposals are unanswered and it is not asking much to expect the owners, and their representatives, to provide a detailed business plan with income projections for the proposed additional revenue activities. This is particularly relevant given that the initial phase is for reduced crowd capacity and that so much is, therefore, dependent on the viability of these proposals. Added to this the current commercial track record and, at times, lack of customer awareness doesn't inspire confidence to enable us to take the income generation proposals at face value!

Yes the owners may ultimately get their way but we can as supporters ensure proposals contain the necessary detail, stack up and securities are in place to safeguard the future of the football club. On that I eagerly look forward to the meeting planned by the supporters trust later this month.

This is probably the best post yet on this topic, and I wouldn't argue with a word of it. But I get the sense that minds may already have been made up at the club and they will press on regardless of any supporter or Sonstrust opinions. There is also the issue that the council seems desperate to develop the current site.

  7. For anyone not on Facebook or Twitter, the club has announced that Kirsty Mackie suddenly passed away over the weekend. There's an area on the Sonstrust website where messages can be left for her family.

    Terrible news.

Indeed, it's an awful start to the week and my heart goes out to Andrew, Scott and Kirsty's Mum.

  8. Got to love the Keyboard managers. Had a good chuckle to reading some of the post.

I don't see what the fuss is all about. As long as he sticks to his budget and we're winning games then who cares? Sign as many GK as you want.

As long as they are of decent enough quality. We need a consistent reliable keeper and none of three already signed fit that bill, it will be a travesty if all the outfield team building is offset bycontinuing to leak rank bad goals, never mind cacking ourselves every time the opposition wins a corner.

  9. Interesting appointment but pretty pleased with that.

Appears he's involved with that Edu academy or whatever you call it as well as Hibs and his own academy type thing.

    In ye come Boozy.

Aye, we've come a long way since Jim George and Gerry Whatshisname.

  10. Was told that for the Rangers games it could go up to as much as £90. More than double what it is now. I'd imagine the usual 'wee' games will be around £50 this year for season ticket holders and £55/£60 for non ticket holders.

If that's true then that's what I feared, fleecing folk is shite whoever they support, businessmen or not. No-one can complain over a modest increase but £90 would be 'kicking the arse out of it'.

  11. That's true. I highly doubt that the club would want to go to such an expense though. It wouldn't just be the stand. It would be new boundaries, turnstiles, toilets etc. The Alloa stand is within the existing ground. Ours wouldn't be. The only really comparable ground is East Fifes

A wee postscript to this temporary stand stuff; has anyone considered what would happen if everything was put in place and the fixture was cancelled, something not unknown in recent years ? Would we all be willing for DFC to take a financial hit in that event, something that could end up costing us money ? The only way round it would be to have the apparatus in place for all the home games and it would be interesting to see how that cost compared to 6 paydays.

Anyway, plenty involving Ian Murray in today's papers, but still no hint of further signings

  12. That's a fair point but if Pete is right in his suggestion of a 30/35% increase that would take the price up to about £250.00 . If the gate prices are £16.00 and £18.00 for next season you would have to attend all but three of the home matches to make a season ticket worthwhile. Not everyone can commit to that. Our season ticket sales have been as high as they have ever been over the last few years and it would be disappointing to see the numbers drop due to a swingeing increase.

£250 ??? Have we put Scott Smith on a 2-year meal deal ?

  13. So what's happened recently that would surprise you if he's still here start of season? Yip he's done great with us and as you say he was never going to be long term with his record, but it looked as if he was going to sign another contract. Is he waiting to see what happens at Hibs? Is the lack of stuff happening at BBS this past week that has drawn that conclusion or do you have insider knowledge from your friend(s) on the board?

There seems to a bit of speculation going on here, but as to any departure by Ian Murray basically two things can happen. Either we gradually collapse and head back down a division or two, or we can use the club's enhanced profile and better cash situation to attract another manager of good calibre.

As long as we remain in the Championship we would surely be an attractive option for an ambitious manager. As for right now, I hope no-one is playing silly beggars.

  14. Kevin was my favourite player so I'm very sad to see him go. I feel Murray could have given him a preseason as he didn't get a chance to prove himself at this level but it's totally understandable. Definitely will get a 2nd division club.

I wonder if Murray is going to play McNiff next season as he still has another year on his contract. I have a feeling he'd have been away had he not been on a 2 year deal.

    :o

Can't say I'm overly bothered he's been farmed out, has looked out of his depth this season and will benefit more from regular games at Annan than sitting on the bench with us. Obviously Murray has deemed him not good enough for this campaign and I'd tend to agree with that on what I've seen so far.

Still young so hopefully we'll see him back a better player, he was decent last season.

Quite pleased with this, as it's another indication that Ian Murray understands the quality of player needed to play in this division. Martin McNiff is young and willing but falls short of quality and pace for me. He is also extremely one-footed. We wish him well at Annan but I think we need to set our sights higher and I hope that Murray is actively working on that.
