  1. I think the Rangers fans are letting their hatred for Celtic cloud their thinking.

if the fans got their wish and the season was null and void, how can they expect to get prize money? The sponsors won’t pay the full whack, the Tv companies won’t pay the full whack either!!

The last thing Rangers need is reduced money compared to what they budgeted for. Especially given that their accounts were showing £10M to get to end of season.
Also the one thing above all that’s kept them afloat has been their brilliant success in Europe under SG. If that’s scrapped as well then they’d likely get reduced Eufa payments as well. And I’d imagine players will have been paid bonuses already for getting out the groups & past Braga.

Final point, if the EL gets scrapped then the coefficient points for this season could also be scrapped meaning we won’t get the extra  Champions League spot, which is crucial to Rangers getting self sustaining, or as close as possible.

would rangers fans be willing to give this all up putting their club at real risk of going bust just to stop Celtic getting 9 in a row, which lets face it. Both clubs have done it already and nobody outside the 2 clubs gives a rats ass about it

Interesting premise for an interview though doesn't tell us anything we don't already know unfortunately. A genuine and honest deep-dive interview with McBride (and others) about this whole time period would be fascinating though. How was it working under Wotherspoon, Iain King and EWB? How did they sell the club to you? Did you ever at any point think the '3-year plan' was going to be successful? What was training at Ravenscraig like? What were the 'politics' of the regime? Why is/was Airdrie one of the 'hardest clubs to go into'? Did Dalziel actually have any day-to-day involvement at the club (at least before 2017/18)? Was his 'football review' genuine or was it just it a stitch up to get his pal in the door the whole time? And maybe hear more about a whole parade of characters (chancers) like Alan Love, Seref Zengin, Colin Hamilton, Wotherspoon (and his obsession with reading P&B and travelling on the supporters' bus), Hugo Faria, Willie Aitchison and the dying days of the Ballantyne regime. Definitely some podcast and/or book worthy content in here 👀

    Would be interesting.

if memory serves me right McBride walked off training after Dalziel came on with a whistle. Think GD coming on pitch was overstepping the mark legally.

To think Dalziel was actually wanting to help pick side while he sat in Radio Clyde studio. Absolute shambles.
What was TW thinking at that time. Made him look totally clueless.

2 CL spots is the bit that matters and it's a hideous prospect.

Remember when the Cups got shared around domestically, with some winning their first trophy in generations, while others won their first ever.

Yes that will become unthinkable again as two sides scoop the lot.  It's ever so exciting though, isn't it?

Personally I think the team playing out of ibrox might have an administration in them and will struggle to recover from living within their means.

how would you feel if an Aberdeen or Motherwell (again) got a crack at CL qualifiers?

  4. Very poor tonight, struggled to keep ball.

big crowd and early goal and they could be there for the taking.

I’ve not been Cosgroves biggest fan but felt sorry for him out there. Worked hard and brought people into game but service was poor and had opportunities to get crosses in and turned inside with square passes.

  5. True they can be inspired by likes of Robertson, but you don’t think more would be if our teams were taking on Europe’s best and thinking they could be sharing the park with a messi, ronaldo of their era.

not to mention it gives them the chance to see the best players in the flesh.

    A  couple of difficulties here.

I was pleased to see Aberdeen beat Rangers to second place twice.  It didn't happen last year though, and won't this.  We know that no version of Rangers was in the division for Aberdeen's second places before that.  The duopoly is I'm afraid, back.

Now the latest Rangers didn't reach the top two by dint of European money.  They did so due largely to the might their gates grant them.  That's clearly blindingly obvious, but is apparently worth repeating for those who wish to pretend I'm saying the OF dominate things simply because of Europe.

Another leap is required by the belief that Rangers are again going bust.  Nobody wishes for this more than me, but I don't for a moment believe it's happening.  It's certainly not likely enough to transform how anyone should view this question.

Finally, the idea that 'trickle down' economics makes sense in a context where its entire raison d'etre is that teams compete with each other using resources that cost money, is too absurd for words.

The tide metaphor is thoroughly unsuccessful here by the way.  The boats would all sit on the same water and be lifted in the same way by the same force.  That sounds a lot more like my preferred model of wealth distribution, than the one you're attempting to defend.

Some very good points, but what would you like to happen? What would cheer you up.

all teams papped out first qualifiers or just Sevco n Celtic?

surely you’ve got to want our teams to be at the top of the game to inspire or kids that being Scottish doesn’t mean you need to accept being sh*te

    You misunderstand my case here.

I don't object at all to the existence of European club competitions for the better sides from each country.

I also fully accept the relatively lowly position we currently occupy in a vastly changed landscape, as entirely justified.

I hate however, the way the riches from the tournaments are distributed, and think it proves especially damaging in small countries like ours.

I've also asked before about how a change in our coefficient would impact on our clubs.  I was told that the situation can effectively get no worse, but that if it got markedly better, we'd get 2 CL spots.  For reasons I've often expressed, that's the last thing I want, and I see those (especially diddy fans) who salivate over the coefficient, as the proverbial turkeys fully embracing Christmas.

I fully get where you’re coming from on this, however Aberdeen finished 2nd 3 of the last 4 seasons.

there’s also a real chance of Sevco going pop again over the next couple of years or at least failing FFP for UEFA license.

imagine the difference a CL group spot would do to a Aberdeen, Killie, Hearts or Hibs. One shot could set them up for years and would surely trickle down through other clubs in transfers.

plus would half the TV share that Celtic would get assuming they’re the other team to qualify.

A rising tide lifts all boats

Not to mention "pay what you want" season ticket and match entry as well as generous charity donations.

It might not have worked out well but surely the club should’ve been applauded for trying something new.

While i agree the £10,000 to cash for kids looks foolish now but are we really having a go at club for giving to charity.

im no finance expert but maybe that reduced tax bill or something.

    What would you have done?

There’s got to be a balancing act. If you don’t spend money on Park then you end up bottom of league and it becomes false economy.  If rovers go down they lose the Spfl money then they won’t be able to service any debt.

You wouldn’t pay all your wages towards clearing your mortgage early to sit in the house with no TV or couch

I have might doubts if the appointment of Ian Murray was ever on - how we could afford to pay his wages alone I just don't know. Anyway how on earth do you go from Ian Murray to appointing John Brogan?

He was interested until found out budget , did interview via videocall & said thanks but no thanks .

chris disputes this version of events though.
