  1. Daft crazy ww3 provoking idea I know.  But.  Could a country like Poland declare its withdrawal from nato then declare war on Russia? Or reform as a new country unbound by past treaties.  Sevpo.

Article 13 of the North Atlantic Treaty says any country wanting to leave must give a 1 year warning.
Presumably to stop rash unilateral decisions in a time of war like the one you mentioned. It would take time to get NATO troops and equipment out of Poland.
  2. I gave up on episode 3 of this latest series. It was just so poor.

I couldn't give up on a show just before the finale.
Perhaps wait till the the last few episodes come out and then try and watch it all? Surely the last 7 will be an improvement? There will likely be a lot more exciting scenes anyway.
  3. Just finished the newest episodes of Ozark. Meh it was ok.

I only just found out that the car crash was a fast forward to something coming up. Think I turned the subtitles on after that scene as they were mumbling too much in the car. Oh well.

Some storylines don't quite work. The PI doesn't seem to be adding anything at all so far. Darlene outstayed her welcome as well.
Everything just feels a little forced. Hopefully the last 7 episodes are an improvement.

  4. Yeah but that also means squeezing a final in as well fucking up either Wales or Austrias fixtures

I.wouldn't say it'd f**k up their fixtures. We've been playing triple headers for a while now and everyone should be used to it.

Move the NL games back a day or two and play the final on the 27th September.
  5. Flip the March and June games of Scotland vs Ukraine. Ukraine (presumably) forfeit the NL game.
If (massive if) Ukraine can play the semi in June then great. The final of our section can be added to the double header in September.

Fifa conduct the WC draw using the average ranking position of the two teams involved in the playoff final.

  6. The IOC are recommending it as long as it doesnt cause major legal issues, so probably. Not sure what happens if there's a general sport wide appeal to CAS by Russia. From what I've briefly read they're only appealing the FIFA/UEFA ban so far.

It seems like unless you have dual citizenship and can get a license under the other passport, you're out.
  7. Any decent adblock apps for Firestick? Youtube seem to have ramped up the ads to pretty much making any video unwatchable. Tried to watch a 20 min video and had 12 ad breaks which were unskippable and it's always the same 2 adverts. Not sure if there's something up with my YouTube app or they've just went mental because it doesn't seem as bad on my other devices that don't have adblock such as my TV in the bedroom.

Have you tried Newpipe? It's a third party YouTube app that gets rid of the ads for you. Not sure how it deals with subscriptions etc.

Every 2/3 months YouTube tries to block it but you just need to download the update it and it'll be fine again.

The logo doesn't show up right on my firestick but other than that its perfect for me (on any android device).

What to do when a phone runs out of charge but and no longer turns on despite using multiple different cables/chargers that work with another phone?
When I plug it into my computer, it recognises something is there (with the manufacturer name in device manager) but the phone doesn't charge or appear as a drive (presumably because it needs to be unlocked).

Something similar happened to a relative of mines iPhone.
It turned out the USB component inside the phone had broken. I just bought that single component for maybe £5 on ebay and replaced it myself using a fairly simple YouTube guide.

This was around 5 years ago though and its obviously tougher to get into phones yourself nowadays without damaging them.

Could the battery itself be damaged/almost dead? Or maybe something is stuck in the charging port stopping enough voltage getting through.
  8. There obviously needs to be a significant united front here from the west. Russia's red lines from December were mental and they don't seem to have any interest in moving away from them.

Tbh a few weeks ago I was kind of hoping Russia would take the Donbas region and "move on". It was unfortunately probably the best case scenario at the time. It's seems pretty clear from Russian military experts (and the sniff test) that that wont be the case now. You don't go to this extent to take territory which is already mainly controlled by your own supporters.
A Russian invasion of Kyiv while strongly telling the US to get out of Europe, running nuclear forces drills and the West continuously re-arming Ukraine is a very dangerous situation.

What does Russia do if/when the only thing holding Kyiv together is western rearmaments? f**k with the gas supplies even more?

Not sure what the end point of the escalation is. Ukraine having a puppet government will not give Russia another Belarus any time soon.

I wonder what the Russian people think of all this.

  9. 5p bet on Man City vs Chelsea (must opt-in) gives a £5 free bet on any sport.

Free £5 bet builder on Paddy Power for Tottenham vs Arsenal.

Standard £5 free bet on Bet365 EPL weekend fixture (for me anyway).

  10. I just read 'Kallocain' by Karin Boye and didn't like it much.
I suppose that's more an 'avoid' than a recommendation.
I've not actually read it but isn't 'We' by Yevgeny Zamyatin the 'original' dystopian novel?  It seems to be rated quite highly but like I said I've not read it myself.

Yeah I've heard that too. Seems very late for the first dystopian novel to be written but maybe I'm wrong. Perhaps earlier books were categorised slightly differently.
  11. John Wyndham - Day of the Triffids.
It's probably more post-apocalyptic than dystopian but if you enjoy stuff like 1984 then you should enjoy this. It's pretty apparent when you read it that it's a massive influence on the likes of The Walking Dead or 28 Days Later.
I've got We by Zamyatin on my to read pile but I've never opened it. Supposedly it's a huge influence on 1984.

Thanks. I've heard about We before but didn't think there was an audiobook out there. I guess I was wrong as there seems to be several on Audible just now. Will probably start it in a few weeks when I've finished my current listen.
  12. The Book Thief is excellent , would highly recommended it. Very dark and such a clever take on a pretty grim subject.  I would say The Man in the High Castle is also worth a read , tho possibly suffers the same as Brave New World in that it feels like it finishes just as it could be getting going.

Cheers. Will have a look at both of them.
I didn't realise The Man in the High Castle was originally a novel. I was thinking about watching the TV series a few weeks ago.
  13. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.
Been meaning to read this for years and it was free on Audible so gave it a go. Disappointing. A bit like Dune I liked the story but couldn't get into the writing. Felt very dated. Worth trying but not really for me.

I thought it was decent. Maybe a little short and didn't fulfil its potential but worth a read. Been meaning to read it again since I read a bit about Huxley supporting eugenics. Having said that it was fairly common to believe in eugenics at the time so perhaps it's not much of a surprise.

Can anyone recommended any other dystopian novels?
Already read 1984 and Fahrenheit 451. Got Slaughterhouse Five & Station 11 on my "to read list" but was looking for some other suggestions.
  14. Almost always audiobooks. I only really read physical books if it's a subject I'm very interested in.
Just one at a time as well. I've been listening to a lot of history audiobooks recently which cover many different countries at once and/or significant lengths of time. It's hard enough to keep up with just one, nevermind having several on the go at once.

  15. Was about to post that. [emoji4] Long way to go but as it stands - Rangers CL pot 4, Celtic only seeded for CL Q2 then pot 2 again if they are in the EL.
Hearts as CW/3rd would face either runners-up/cup winners from the countries around us, or champions of lower ranked countries dropping down from CL qualifying. Fortunately they have a guaranteed ECL spot, likely in pot 4. Motherwell and Hibs unseeded in ECL Q3 with Hibs seeded in Q2.
Of course it all depends on who qualifies and whether match results follow the club coefficients.

Poor Aberdeen as well. Finally get enough points to be seeded in q3 and they're 6th in the league.
  16. Any thoughts on Chelsea v Liverpool? I've laid off my pre match bet so it's literally a free £25 punt. Tempted to go greedy with Chelsea HT Liverpool FT but maybe something more like 4/1 would be wiser.

I'm expecting goals. Will maybe take both teams to score in 1st half at 3/1 (if its still there inplay).
  17. Masi/ the stewards fucked it again several times during the race. The first time helping Lewis. The second helping Max.

One thing I would say is even if they let the other cars through, surely that would have only taken a handful more seconds and they would have raced the last lap anyway?

  18. The consequences for Hamilton would be he loses the championship on races won so he will have a very big incentive to not do that.

If he does nothing and waits for a Verstappen mistake he'll finish 2nd anyway. A random lunge will come if they're close and the driver behind feels they have no choice (last 10-15 laps).

  19. It was clear after their first runs that Verstappen was taking pole unless Hamilton got a significant tow (even with a tow it would have been very difficult as he'd need a near perfect 1st and 3rd sector).

Lewis hates any kind of interference on his lap though. I think sometimes Mercedes just need to tell him, "No, you're getting a tow from Valterri. Do what the f**k we say!"

Still expecting a collision. The one behind won't care and will throw it up the inside at some point, irrespective of the consequences.
