  1. Since I've been critical of Reading previously I will give credit where it's due and say that he was good today especially first half where he put in some excellent deliveries. Question remains if he can maintain that at Championship level but hopefully takes confidence from these games.

Also pleasing reaction from the full team to the disgraceful challenge on Tomlinson. It's tackles like that which put manager's off playing youngsters but he handled himself well.

Did he not say at the Q and A that Ecrepont (and Hewitt) were effectively free to go if they wished? FWIW based on his contribution in the league cup I'd be keeping Ashford around. Not as a stater but can come off the bench and make an impact.

Believe so but didn't attend myself. I imagine it would have been Ecrepont, as Hewitt was ill, as I don't see the benefit in McGeady reviewing a 27y/o.

As you say Ashford has that nuisance factor that probably suits coming off the bench and as long as we aren't relying on him for goals then he's worth keeping at the minute.

  3. Decent article here with Bullen https://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/23687498.lee-bullen-eclectic-career-mcgeadys-ayr-united-role/

Couple of notable points regarding McGeady

“I asked him if he was interested in coaching but he said going down the director of football route was more interesting to him,”

He was up doing the warm-up at St Johnstone last weekend, but I asked him to focus specifically on one of the players we have to make a decision on, whether we keep him in the building, put him out on-loan or even release him.

Don't think Ecrepont can do very much at the goal but did ok at the cross right after, which ironically was a better and more dangerous cross.

Yeah also was the one with the goal line block start of the 2nd.

Think all anyone really wanted was for Ecrepont to be given a fair chance. Probably done nothing spectacular tonight in Bullen's eye to oust Reading but equally not sure how he can say he's not ready.

I'd also say it's unfair to rate their entire season and scope, which of course was successful, on the couple of bad games in the play offs.

Fine for me it's the same outcome whether I judge them on the playoffs, 2nd half of the season  or full season. That is rarely did we control games which is to be expected when your CM'S are all box to box types and that while Murdoch and Dempsey are 6/10 most weeks anything above a 7 last season was rare.

Had a wee play about with this to try and get an idea of where we’re at in terms of building a squad. Obviously this isn’t our set starting eleven but if you had to pick holes in it and guess what Bullen might do to it then I’d say we would be shipping out Ashford, Hewitt, Ecrepont and Bangala (not listed). And then bringing in a winger, left back, right back and midfielder. That’s probably unlikely to happen but I do think Ashford will go and another winger is needed regardless of that happening as I think that’s probably one of the weakest areas in terms of natural players as we only really have Murphy as a recognised winger. Amartey has done okay but he flits between winger and striker. McKenzie and Ashford offer nothing there and I’m not sure if that’s what McGeady has been signed for. Full back is obviously a concern but that requires a body or two out before we can sign anyone. Would ideally like another midfielder to play in an attacking role as McGeady won’t last the season. We could always go 4-4-2 in the event of an injury but I think having the three in midfield suits us far better.

I think the club are planning on doing a fair bit of business yet so that’s promising.

Based on squad numbers 7, 11 and 12 are available.

If we let Ashford and Bangala leave and send Bryden on loan then we probably require a LW and RW/No. 10 (depending on where McGeady plays). However we still need a No.6 to dictate the play and protect the back 4 as that current midfield two were shown up in the play off game at Partick.

I'm pretty certain @GaryMc93 already debunked the bold bit previously when you said that. Unless you've changed it to account for his fact checking?

In fairness it wasn't him that said it previously but it's true Reading has never won the official one, which is voted for by fans. No idea if he's got one from a supporters club at some point but that wouldn't mean much.

Agreed, a very honest and frank interview and with the level he's played at it can surely only help to keep up progress both on and off the pitch and to drive standards which can only ever be a positive.

Hearing all the areas that'll take up his time:

Playing, training, recruitment, board meetings, staff meetings, influencing the direction of the club, assisting the manager and players, shadowing the MD, on the field coaching, mentoring young players

A lot of these jobs by his own admission being things that he's looking to learn and gain experience in.

I think there needs to be a bit of caution that he's not taking on too much too soon. There will clearly have to be an extended period of time for him to settle into the dual role.

I wonder if he's splitting his time 50/50 over both the player / technical manager position?

Might be more of a log book type role to assist with his degree where he'll drop in and out of different areas but never do them all at the one time, at least until he gets injured.

In the record article it mentions he's going to be involved in recruitment if that's so whats Glendinning doing or is he still even with the club?

From what Glendinning said when he first joined his sounded more of a head scout role with a fancier title given he spoke about seeing some of the players we signed live.

Doubt McGeady will attend many games if he's training so maybe he'll more pull reports together or carry more weight when trying to sell the club to prospective signings.

Strange opinion around Roberts considering his first season was about his best and he looked an outstanding prospect. Think it was Sheff Urd or Notts Forest he went for a trial with. It then took another four years to get back some decent form. Forrest was different in that he was very small in size and kept getting injuries. Once he grew a bit and toughened up everything was fine and didn't look back. Not sure why Crawford regressed so badly after year one and why it took so long for him to find consistency

He was initially played out of position by Roberts too. Went on trial with Birmingham along with Sinclair and Shankland in his first season and then had something like glandular fever in his 2nd that wasn't picked up on. Left at the end of the season before reappearing in September only for Roberts to be too bitter to play him. Did also find himself being Wardrope at one point under McCall.

However, he certainly had more good games than bad for us and if the rumours were true that he wanted to return last season then it's disappointing if we turned him down.
