  1. The attendances given at the games were 32000 and 28000 but hard to say how many Dumbarton fans as there was no real segregation and the fans intermingled. At a guess maybe between 4000 and 5000 Dumbarton supporters. I know I was in the old north stand and was surrounded by mostly Celtic fans.

From my position one could clearly see that Macaris fourth goal from the corner quite clearly went out of play before swinging back in for Macari to header. Even then Dumbarton came back with the Master scoring in the dying seconds.

  2. Takes me back to the league cup semi finals in 1970. Then we used at least a dozen buses all double deckers of the most primitive type to get to Hampden. All the buses were were lined up at Miller street and Round Riding Road. I was in charge of one of the buses and had to get about 60 excitable fans to get on bus. In those days there were no drinking rules for buses and a lot of fans were half cut on boarding the bus plus most had a carry out with them By the time we got to Hampden most were in a merry mood. Plus in those days smoking was allowed so by the time we got there the bus was minging. Also as we lived in prehistoric times and and bowels were bursting with all the drink when we stopped half the bus relieved themselves against the side of the bus in the street where we parked.

At the end of the game everyone was in a merrier mood and any remaining drink was consumed. However with so many similar buses many could not remember which bus they were on and just climbed on the first bus . I took a headcount but was not sure if everyone was on the bus from coming. Any way we set off and everyone was in good humour as we stopped at convenient drinking holes for the celebration to continue.

Right, here goes.....the link below is from yesterday's Glasgow Herald:-

    http://www.heraldscotland.com/business_hq/16045367.Dumbarton___s_tax_haven_owners_strike_deal_to_bring_club_onshore/

Lots of uplifting stuff in there and inspiring quotes from Ian Wilson, especially about the Challenge Cup Final.  Wilson lives in Coventry, his fellow Brabco Directors Chris Stainton and Callum Hosie live in Leeds and Ormskirk respectively, yet to the best of my knowedge none of them was in attendance at Oswestry last week, despite all of these places being a damned sight nearer Shropshire than Dumbarton.  The club Chairman, Les Hope, is on holiday for the month of February so it was left to (unpaid) Directors Colin Hosie and Alan Findlay to do the honours.

And you see , that's the thing.   There is no battery of folk running DFC, never mind a commercial department, and were it not for the efforts of these two guys assisted by a handful of people we'd barely function at all as a professional football club.  This is a matter of simple fact, as is (owners) Brabco's refusal to invest money in the football team, so please bear this in mind, as these few stalwarts will probably bear the brunt of the supporters' anger and frustration  for the simple reason that not everyone may be aware of the sitaution, and these guys are the only folk ever likely to be in the firing line.

To say it's a far from ideal, never mind ordinary state of affairs is stating the obvious, but if anyone wants to assist in any way towardss making the 24th of March a memorable day for Dumbarton FC I'm sure Colin and Alan would be delighted to hear from you.

Finally and for the avoidance of doubt, I have no personal angle to peddle here other than being fed up seeing decent and genuine DFC people having become human shields for chancers with no emotional attachment to our club.

I must agree it was a sorry day when DFC became embroiled with Brabco. There are a few folks out there who really care for the club like Alan and Colin but Brabco seem to look upon us as a possible money making venture. I really fear that if the team gets relegated or the Council gets uppity the Brabco boys will give up sell for what they can get and leave the Sons sailing into an unassailable wind. I know the Trust have reached tentative agreements but all could come to nought if Brabcos members think that they could lose their money. It is not that long since Clydebank disappeared from senior football and I hope my fears are wrong and Dumbarton don’t follow them.

  4. Common sense prevails by letting under 12s in for free. Let’s hope that this will encourage parents to bring their kids and the attendance will be boosted. Remember to bring your drums and tambourines. Dumbarton needs as many supporters and as much noise as possible in backing the team. Let’s try and sell out the two stands on offer.

Bit of a random one, but I was just spending an idle moment thinking about our POTY vote. I know it's a few months off, but I can't think of a single standout candidate. Looking at the squad on the website hasn't helped either:

Mango - Started well, regressed and has been poor in recent weeks.
Dick - Been here five minutes.
Dowie - Started horribly, though he has been our best player during this dreadful run. Probably close to my pick if I was to choose today.
Dill - Hasn't featured much, seems to be injured quite a bit.
Boomer - Would've been a strong candidate, but looks like he'll be out for the season.
Div Smith - Not anywhere near the player he was last year.
Sam Wardrop - God we miss him. Strong candidate for YPOTY.
Scott Gal - Not exactly Alan Martin last year, though he's been decent enough in recent weeks.
Carsy - Consistent. Totally wasted alongside Hutton though, when he's at his best doing the dirty work for an attacking guy.
Froxy - Will produce a stunning 60 minutes once every two months.
SeaGal - Hardworking and versatile. Not the most effective.
Handling - Christ, aye, he's still with us.
Hutton - If the season ran from Bonfire night until the first weekend in December the award would be all his.
    Div Wilson - Nope.
Nade - One goal all season tells the story. I love the big guy, but it just isn't working.
    Beany - See Liam Dick
Mark Stewart - Another one who could've been in with a shout had he not been injured.
Walsh - Clearly our best player in the middle on his day. Has been totally ineffective out wide though, and hasn't done a great deal since the St Mirren game.

Looks like Nicky Phinn could be the winner

  6. interesting to note that despite still being involved in two cups in February that Dumbartons average league attendance is only 923. In fact if you add in home games in the various cups the average plummets to 772. If you assume that the average away league attendance is at least 300 it shows that Dumbarton on a good day are attracting only 600 home supporters. Hopefully any fans coming out of the woodwork for the trip to Oswestry stick with us for the rest of the season. Our proposed 4000 seater new stadium is gone to feel lonely if only 500 or so turn up each week.

Seeing as things are so boring i wanted to ask Sons fans what signing was your most disappointing in that it promised a lot and delivered very little?

For the money spent ,32k, Calum Campbell for me.Scored a brace vs St Johnstone in the mickey mouse cup and that was it.

Once upon a time a player called Gary Dickie was signed by us and was described as the best defender in junior football. He then partnered Pat Cairney as central defenders in a team which plummeted to the very bottom of Scottish senior football. Think of James Allan  Craig Lynes or Steven Craig only ten times worse and you realise how bad Gary was.

  8. 60 years ago this week Sons Played Dundee United and beat them 2-1 goals by Hughie Gallagher and Charlie Stewart. Nothing new under the sun is there?

As for television in 1958 Scotsport had one camera at a match which ran out of film every 30 minutes so that any goals scored were missed when the film was being changed. Not that showing goals were important when the camera could be filming the crowd full of grinning bunnet wearing men and boys and probably women as bunnet wearing was compulsory until 1962.

  9. Sensational news in Lennox Herald that Boney M will appear at the stadium in May along with Rick Astley.. Most exciting thing since Craig Lynes put pen to paper and with Ian Russell on the point of a comeback maybe we could persuade the three Coyle brothers to sign on an emergency loan.

Fair comment Moonster, and I'd rather we avoided another Eddie Annand/Isaac English type signing.  The fact remains though that we badly need to bring in a striker and preferably ahead of Saturday.  Patience is a luxury we can ill-afford right now with the fixtures we have coming up.

What we need is someone who has scored 30 goals for the club has been player of the year and was the seasons top scorer. Wait a minute there is someone . I remember his first name was Gary but his surname eludes me.

S4C, I think the kick off time is to suit the Welsh language tv channel?

They usually show live Wales Premier Football League or Rugby on a Saturday afternoon.

Poor show at any rate, whatever the thinking behind it.

I think that a lot of fans will end up finding a hotel or boarding house for the night unless you want to drive home from a game which could finish after 10 o’clock if there is extra time.

I think we should regard this match as our Lisbon moment and devote the weekend to the game. With our next semi final due in 2050 we might as well make the most of it.

  12. Have passed the proposed site several times in the past couple of days and where I have  to admit the fields are not flooded in all honesty they make the old Boghead pitch look somewhat arid To be frank there is no way I would buy a house there The fields would be better service used as farmland Oh wait a minute it is farmland

It might be wise for the Trust to neither agree or disagree with the proposal and let the individual members make up their own minds or we could end up with a Brexit situation where we are all at each other’s throats

My allegiance is to Dumbarton Football Club I don’t give a damn about its directors or for Brabco

One of? It was an absolute stunner.

Without doubt the best I'll ever see.

I can still see big Roy standing 25 yards out hitting the ball perfectly on the volley and the ball screaming into the back of the net with such force it flew straight back out and landing near the centre circle The referee thought it had hit the bar as did half the players and spectators but the linesman on the far side raised his flag giving the goal-

This takes me back to anothther incident in the late sixties at home against opposition I have forgotten big Roy was flattened by a terrible tackle and was carried off in great pain- His leg might have been broken but I cannot fully remember Anyway nowadays a player being carried off would receive polite applause but not then The adults took the opportunity to light up another Senior Service whilst the wains took the opportunity to scout for stones to throw at the ballboys As big Roy was carried in great pain towards the stand one worthy leant on on the boundary wall and roared Take the useless B out the back and shoot the B Aye those were days

What does the frox say.... About his big move?

Apparently this is his dream move. As a child he always supported Dumbarton and Paddy Flannery is his all time favourite player. To live in Dumbarton is a childhood desire and he would like to stay in Dumbarton Castle.

  15. Regards car parking I gave up a couple of seasons ago and now park up the road amongst the new housing block As regards the numpty steward who go out on to castle road to direct traffic on the main road this is totally illegal not to mention highly dangerous to the stewards involved. If the police do not want to do it they should enforce the law by forbidding sstewards from doing if.As for locking fire doors anyone witnessing this should report it to police or council in which case the clubs safety certificate can be revoked and the club shut down.

  16. Connaghs put four past Prestatyn on Saturday for a 4-0 victory Whether that is good bad or indifferent I have no idea but on checking website I see Connaghs are a somewhat hirsute team. Maybe there is a razor shortage in Wales but our boys will have to start growing beards to match them.

Good to progress and get rid of that shame at the same time.

Hopefully we haven't picked up any more injuries tonight and we can concentrate on the serious business of the league on Saturday.

Did Carswell get much of an outing tonight?

Carswell came on as sub and was obviously a bit rusty. Saw Hutton for first time tonight and he seemed well off the pace. Obviously needs more game time. If the Prince was playing we would have put six past a young rangers side who played pretty football but had no cutting edge. Indeed they only scored due to a bad mistake by Johnston. I think next round draw is tomorrow and it would be nice to see the lads have a run in a cup competition for a change.

The situation in the Stadium is surreal to an outsider, but having known the boards history of f**k ups it doesn't surprise me.

where is Ian McFarlane when you need him,I knew the man very well and I remember saying then 'better the devil you know'

North Korea keeps coming into my head for some reason

They wonder why there are no casual supporters

Allegedly Kim Jong Un has reported the Dumbarton board to to the UN regsarding human rights violations

You can't legislate for stupidity and you can't legislate to change people's habits. The current legislation doesnt work and actually probably makes public perception worse. The bad habits that surround Scottish football haven't gone away since the introduction of that barmy offensive behaviour bill. Theres still a minority of fans who want to indulge in all sorts of utter nonsense. It is a minority, but they're still there and I doubt that anything can be done - short of banning - to remove that element from football.

The game needs to be seen to be doing something. It's probably not doing the right things, or taking enough steps to change public perception of football. Its why the likes of the SFSA are going to be very important for the future of football because a game that's reliant on working class men for it's entire fanbase is doomed. We're not bringing kids through to become life long fans as quickly as we're losing the older generation.

Children and all seated stadiums do not equate. They need room to run around when they get bored
