  1. This is in no way intended as some sort of bitterness about a player leaving us to join a rival, but I am astounded that Liam Callaghan has managed to not only get a move to a club who I’d expect to be right up there in League 1, but also managed to get a 2 year deal. Been a great servant for us for most of his spell but I was convinced he’d be going League 2 or even Lowland League next.

  2. I think Cregg may turn out to be an annoyingly good appointment for you lot. Been coaching at a relatively decent level for the last 5 years or so and I seem to remember him being fairly well liked as a guy during his time at Montrose which you would hope for Brechin translates to him having retained a good relationship with people involved in Scottish football.

    Afternoon!

Hoping to go to the Kelty - Hibs League Cup game : my first ever visit.

Where's the best bet(s) for a half decent pint before the game? Anywhere near the ground at all?

    Thanks in advance!

The Kings which is a 5 minute walk from the ground is decent and we’ve been looked after with a decent wee selection of sandwiches/sausage rolls etc laid out for us in there both times I’ve been down. Social club within the ground is decent too.

Couple of older guys (Dillon and Gardyne) in there, do you still think they'll be good for another season?  I see Dillon turns 41 in July, does he still feature regularly?  They've obviously played at a higher level so the quality/experience factor does come into play to balance the age thing, but eventually there comes a point where the legs don't have it any more.  Wondered what the Mo fans think here.

Sean Dillon is probably still one of the fittest players at the club. Seems to look after himself outside of football too and according to Transfermarkt he played 79% of the minutes he was available for in the league last season, no issues at all with him for next season however centre back is an area we need to strengthen and if we can get a body or 2 in there, it won’t be all that surprising to see his minutes reduce.

Gardyne has an identical percentage in terms of minutes played (admittedly I’m not sure how reliable Transfermarkt is here) . He’s playing a deeper midfield role for us now and is still one of our better players however once again, he’s playing in a position where we need to strengthen and it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see him starting to be phased out if we can get quality in there.

There’s a few who’s contract situations are unclear, Aaron Donald, Aulay Martin and Kasey Brown all signed last year and immediately went out on loan but I can’t find anything to show how long they were signed for. I’ve also not included the likes of Harry Craig who has been in the first team squad for a few months now but thus far has not to my knowledge signed a professional contract.

  6. I’m very much split here. On 1 hand I have family ties to Inverness as a city and whilst they don’t support the club, it’s always nice to see local boys, including a few friends of the family, breaking through in to the first team. On the other hand, after the comment/comments about Montrose being a village team, your entire first team moving its operations to a literal village is somewhat amusing.

Any particular reason you are visiting Liege? i have a night there on the way over for the Hungary match but don't really know much about the city and we were just going to wing it for the day/night

A friend who spent a bit of time in Belgium recommended it. I’m travelling across to Germany on my own and flying out on the 19th so I have a few days with nothing planned after we play Switzerland. Plan is to just tour about a bit.

If you're using any of the trains shown there which is the fastest route then you'd be best to book the ICE train from Cologne to Liege at the very least in advance although you might be at the point now where it doesn't go up much in price between now and then. If going the Aachen route I mentioned then it takes a bit longer but you can book on the day and it's the same price so it really depends whether time/flexibility or cost is more important. Aachen route goes Bonn to Cologne on a regional train, change to another regional train to Aachen then jump on a Belgian train there (the Belgian trains from Aachen to Liege are 11.10 euro regardless of when you book, if you get an ICE train from Aachen to Liege it will cost more than that so don't get on the wrong one).

Your other option is Flixbus run direct from Bonn to Liege each morning and it's about 8 quid, takes around an hour longer than the fastest train route but then at least you don't have to change.

Cost isn’t too much of an issue within reason, aiming very much for flexibility. Thanks very much for your help, I’ll take a look at it a bit more nearer the time, bus might actually be a better option if it’s a straight a-b

Bonn to Cologne will be regional trains, you don't reserve a seat and can buy on the day if you want.

Bonn to Liege it depends on your route, if you're doing regional trains via Aachen then again it's fine to buy on the day but check Belgian train lines for the Aachen to Liege part of the journey. If you're doing Eurostar from Cologne you'd probably need to be booking in advance to get any sort of decent price>

I’m purely google mapping it and this is what it’s throwing up. Had seen something mentioned about a lot more trains needing booked in advance which isn’t an issue if need be but if I can get away with buying on the day it makes my life easier.

  10. I’m hoping someone can dumb this down for me. I’m flying Manchester to Frankfurt on the 19th, staying in Bonn and my train travel is included in the flight as is the return leg on the 24th.

19th I’ll be going from Bonn to Cologne and at some point I plan on going to Liege for a day, do I need to reserve seats for all of this or can I buy a ticket at the station on the day?

I remember this now you’ve said it. That is absolutely gutting. You’d hope they’d clock on that it’s the place we all go come match day and open up for 11. If not plenty of other smashing pubs in close vicinity, a wee opening day game would be some carry on…

They did open for the Falkirk game, but even that took plenty of persuading. They weren’t even aware that a big game was on until I happened to mention the amount of ticket sales about a week beforehand.

Like you say though, hardly a lack of pubs in the town to pick from.

I would like to think everyone will thoroughly enjoy their trip to a tidy looking much improved Gayfield Park. None of this hand the cash over to some old guy at the turnstile pish either you need an electronic ticket to scan in to get through the barriers these days.

I think this looks like a cracking league with no clear favourite. I would like to think we’ve got a really good group of players already signed up and good to go for League 1 and with a wee bit more work we should find this year much more enjoyable than last.

Although there is the McIntyre thing to take into consideration, guy obviously couldn’t have had a harder situation to manage last season with the ridiculous injury count and problems to deal with since he come in but even at that it wasn’t good enough and he’s got a lot to prove. I am willing to give him time and I think the majority are now at that stage too so I hope for everyone’s sake he gets off to a decent start and we can all get behind him.

As for the other clubs, ICT could go in either direction, you could see them bouncing back right away or turning into an even bigger shit show. Either way it should be very entertaining. A night away for the away games is always also so very good Inverness is a great place and a fantastic night out (although some people at the club don’t seem to think so!!).

Kelty… never been and be a quick journey in the motor. Looking forward to playing them for the first ever time in league duty.

We have had run ins with Dumbarton over the years and some fantastic games and occasions - f**k you Stephen Grindlay.

Stenny is a decent wee journey. I hate going to Alloa but again another team we’ve had plenty of history with recently.

Montrose… Star Bar for 11am and a superb underrated lower league derby. Always enjoyable putting them in their box… 😉

Annan is the best away day in the country. Train tickets will be bought for the away game as soon as fixtures are announced.

And that leaves QoTs and Cove. Cove handy for the fact it’s an hour up the A90 although no offence to Cove fans it’s the ground I probably have least enjoyed visiting in the entire SPFL. QoTS a good away day on the bus and had some very good memories there recently, the place where Joel Nouble officially turned into an AFC superstar.

Cannot wait to hopefully start enjoying Saturdays and the weekends again after a good 18 month of them being an absolute chore!

As previously mentioned, the good old days of an early start at The Star are long gone as they don’t open until 4pm. They would possibly open early if someone contacted them in advance to say there’s a decent amount of folk coming through but I wouldn’t bank on it.

"League One looks particularly poor next season, with just yourselves (ICT) and a poor Queen of the South side as the sole FT clubs, so it really should be an easy division for Inverness to win - but you just can't see it working."

Words of "wisdom" from Ray Patterson, an Arabs fan on the Championship forum.

Based on what I saw of ICT over the two legs of the playoffs against us, I think this man is clueless.

I've said it before but other than Lawal, a loan player, ICT weren't that impressive.

I think the League next season is looking very competitive with no clear hot  favourites.

The quote above was related to ICT's proposed move to train at Kelty.

Where do the Mo train currently? I know they used to train at Perth but I have also heard they occasionally use the Oriam.

I believe it’s one night in Perth and one night in Dundee usually, unless it’s changed again.

I can only surmise that Petrie has a decent job outside of football. As he seems perfectly happy at Montrose. They’re always well organised & you a tough game from them.

The only threat of him leaving, probably comes from Dunfermline; & they seem to have passed him over multiple times.

I’d be surprised if it’s a case that Dunfermline have passed him over rather than the other way around. I’m sure there’ll be others that know better than me but I believe you’re correct in that he has a very very good job outside of football.

The only person to blame for Dicks downfall was Dick. Dick is or definitely was (I kind of feel like he’s peaked and is maybe yesterday’s man now) a great brilliant guy and football manager…. But only when things are going well. His whole demeanour, attitude and character turned pretty toxic after anyone had the audacity to ask questions of him in season 22/23 - he also moved away from everything he was good at after we nearly won the league.

The board absolutely backed Dick in everything he wanted to do. Dick and Pink both believed that there were no part time players in Scotland good enough to improve us and took up this new avenue of signing FT football players and making us hybrid. The board backed him with this and supported him, we had maybe 15 ‘full time’ players who the club moved up to the town and put in accommodation etc. All very well looked after.

Nobody can say the board did not back him and him leaving had nothing to do with that at all. It was also a very similar story for Dick when he was at Forfar, it all ended very sourly there too and we were told by Forfar fans when he was appointed that when things start going wrong for Dick he does not handle it well and that’s spot on. Hope he does well at EF and think moving on was correct for both him and Arbroath. Best manager I’ll ever see here and massive respect for him.

On Brechin - completely agree. Feel like they are lazy comparisons to make. Even though there are 4 clubs within the same council area we are all completely different.

In regard to Montrose and support etc it is easy to say but how do you think the home support would hold up or improve if you did go up and only won 2 or 3 home games. Think if you’re going to go up a league and capture and build a fanbase you need to have some success to run along side it. Think for the size of town Montrose is it would be hard to build upon what is currently there by too much.

It is a good thing to be as optimistic about your clubs future as you are and it’s good to see Petrie and the players have given you the hope that things can get even better. All I am saying is the Championship and going up is not the be all and end all. Montrose are in a really good place. It might have ended up being a fkn miserable year next year who knows.

You would obviously like to get up to the Championship and see what happened and how it went I get that but it is probably important to just enjoy and recognise what you have achieved in the here and now.

It will be interesting to see how Montrose get on next year and what happens with some of the older players over the summer and who comes in to replace them etc.

Regardless of all of this I just cannot wait to rock up to the Star Bar for opening time in the first away day.

Star Bar doesn’t open until 4pm now so you’ll need to pick an alternative venue I’m afraid.

Mon lads, rooting for you massively this Saturday. Have you been happy with Luke Graham this season? I think he won Young POTY if I'm not mistaken. Cheers

Luke has been absolutely fantastic! Excellent player and seems to have had a great upbringing too. Our assistant manager Ross Campbell rates him very very highly that much I do know.
