I'm not expecting us to challenge this season. If we can establish ourselves as a Championship side, be in with a shout of a (promotion) play-off place into the second half of the campaign and bring some youth players through then I'll consider it to have been a success. My worry is that unless we strengthen the squad and bring in at least a couple of players with some experience of playing at this level then we'll be scrapping it out at the bottom of the table and could well go down.

I guess its how you strike the balance. The more you "bring in at least a couple of players with some experience of playing at this level" the less you " bring some youth players through"

In Ferrie, Robson, Fox, Thomson, Longridge, Thomas, we have a fair amount of experience - there is obviously an element for risk in having roughly half your starting eleven 21 or under. I'd be happy to take that risk - we could always bring a couple in in January if things are looking a bit perilous.

I get that we are still early, but winning all 4 is still pretty good going. Winning is a habit, they say, and they could have had a more difficult start to the league.

It is, but it is worth bearing in mind that Arbroath won 4 out of 4 in the group stage last season including beating St Mirren.  They only won 6 out of 36 in the league.

Am I kidding myself on to think that the last 4 games were to trial a new style of play which includes our keeper playing a far more proactive part of playing the ball 'out from the back' rather than a real intention of progressing in the diddy cup  ?. If it continues into the league program which starts at Inverness next week it won't be long before it's realised that a high pressure line will (as it did today) eventually result with mistakes ending in tap-ins.

I'm no fan of hoof ball but there is a lot to be said for a well placed long ball and although playing from the back looks great if it is executed correctly especially if it results in a shooting opportunity there imo has to be a balance between the two styles and not what seems to be the case at the moment of an almost obsession on playing it back even if there are openings elsewhere.

Looking forward to the real stuff starting next week and can only hope that gaining 3 points even at this stage of the season is not sacrificed for the sake of an experiment?

playing the ball out from the back is hardly revolutionary. Lots of teams do it and some are very successful. It does need players who are comfortable on the ball & able to pass the ball accurately.

Even the best teams will get caught out from time to time and it is worth noting that that didn't happen today when we had 11 players on the pitch.

I am 100% behind the manager and the way he wants us to play.

I popped in for a pint just to check it out. Choice of beers, prices and decor all say city centre to me rather than a social club. Aimed at the revenue-earning party nights rather than a fans pre-match favourite. Atmosphere was dead.

Also ideal for a sausage roll & a glass of sherry after auntie Mary's funeral.

Genuinely thought she would be a game changer at this level and maybe she has been in securing the funding required to rent Hampden, redevelop Lesser Hampden and run such a highly paid squad.

But from the outside looking in the decisions have been poorly made and the communications have been even worse. Hope you have a good SLO who can enact some long overdue change.

Assuming, SLO stands for supporters liaison officer, we don't have one as far as I know.

Although it's always possible we have one but no one told the supporters.

That was a really good listen. I'm impressed with Beuker's ambition, and even more so with his ideas about improving players, as opposed to just buying replacements, and with giving everyone a proper chance to succeed at youth level; two simple ideas that go absolutely against the standard grain of thought in Scottish football.

Even though I'm not expecting us to challenge for the title again this season (and frankly I'd be happy with mid-table obscurity, just like I would have been last year and the year before...), I haven't been so enthusiastic at the start of a season for years, maybe decades. It feels like all the pieces are now in place and this is (hopefully) the start of something special.

Also, been lurking a while, but first post, so hi everyone.

Welcome - you are one of the few folk in Leith who are enthusiastic today.

Luis did very well at Cove. All of us wanted him to stay if we stayed up. Tricky winger who can tie full backs in knots and has a very decent delivery too. Won't score many but he'll hug the sideline and try to get to the byline at any opportunity.

He really shined with Max Johnston behind him. Clearly the latter was exceptional but with any competent overlapping or supporting full back he should do you a turn.

Downside like many wingers he naturally doesn't win anything aerially and defensively won't offer much.

Hopefully you get the Cove version as the QP one seemed a completely different player. This is his ceiling due to physicality, strength and overall impact I feel

Yeah, for all he was pretty abysmal for us, the little I saw him at Cove, he certainly looked to have improved significantly. Its certainly an unusual career trajectory. Liverpool - QP - Cove - Inverness.

I say good luck to him (except against us of course)

Still a long way to go in terms of squad building

    IMG_1288.jpeg

so, if 1 -11 are the first team that gives you:

    1: Ferrie

    2: ??

    3: Robson

    4: Bannon

    5: fox

    6: Spong

    7: Hepburn

    8: Thomson

    9: Paton

    10: Savoury

    11: Thomas

with the exception of Savoury (obviously) & a  right back that is a pretty likely starting 11.

It might suggest that the no. 2 jersey is being saved for a new right back as has often been discussed.

So tomorrow, does Bruce play right back  or does Bannon play there with Tizzard playing alongside Fox?

Who takes up Savoury's role? Jarrett? Turner? Longridge? or maybe Healy who came on as a sub against Livi & looked pretty good.

Having been here for several years before DA joined I can confirm that.

A- thread jumping had always went on between fans of other clubs.

    and

B- @Bring Your Own Socks may not have noticed point A as nobody cared about the QP thread before your recent ascent to the role of pantomime villains of Scottish fitba (I speak on the subject of pantomime villains with authority as a Airdrie fan).

    Oh no you don't.

It's entirely reasonable to acknowledge the SFA had Queen's Park over a barrel with the purchase of Hampden and that the land was actually worth far more than they paid so lingering resentment over this is understandable, but portraying this as a one way street of the big bad SFA shafting poor defenceless Queen's Park is a matter of perspective.

You can look at it as the pioneers of the game being cruelly turfed out of their home by an uncaring governing body who wouldn't have given two shits if this had been followed by Queen's Park ending up in the Lowland League and entering a death spiral.

You can alternatively look at it as a club who were subsidised heavily by the governing body and public purse for decades, to a scale that no other Scottish club has ever seen, akin to a landlord happy for their tenant and others to cover their costs. When that tenant decided the situation was untenable for them they made yet another massive financial contribution to the club, leaving them with the resources and the land available to build a fit for purpose stadium.

Queen's Park have done extremely well out of the SFA, which you acknowledge yourself by saying not having their subsidy would have put you out of business. You were obviously fully entitled to be compensated as owners of the stadium, but far from other clubs cruelly ignoring your plight and horrible treatment at the hands of the authorities, this has been an advantage for Queen's Park over the rest of Scottish football.

I have this bizarre and improbable dream that someday soon, someone who has even a vague idea of the facts will contribute to this debate.

    Good to dream I suppose.

Anyway, I agree that the keeper looked very assured tonight, Healey looked promising in the Savoury role and although there may not be many getting first team starts, few of them would be out of place on the bench.

Pitch held up well under constant downpour too.

You’re the only club on the country that the governing body has bailed out by buying their stadium. Ask Clydebank, third Lanark, airdrie etc fans if they think it’s fair?!

Sorry I missed all the Scotland games at Kilbowie and Broomfield.

You have plumbed new levels of ignorance with this post.

Oh, and we built Cathkin Park :)

cheers, the choice of opponent made me think there had maybe been a "glamour" game before this one.

Hmm, I think the mixed reception to Lesser Hampden finally being "ready" may have caused them to keep things low key. Let's face it we do not have the capacity for anything vaguely resembling a "glamour game."

That having been said, our first real competitive game there will be 2 weeks tomorrow and it would be nice if the club produced a real (you know printed on paper) programme to mark the occasion. I'm sure most of the fans would buy it and loads of programme collectors too. An opportunity for some additional revenue to help delay the inevitable impending financial disaster.

I'm sure they'll be fine though

...so most of this sort of stuff is coming from fans of clubs who are pretty much established in the 2nd tier of Scottish football - some even aspire to be competing at the top level.

Unlike them, until very recently we were a near permanent fixture in the basement of Scottish Football - just occasionally popping up a level only to get papped back down after a season or two. This, of course was largely out own fault through insisting on maintaining our amateur status. I think it is fair to say that most of the fans were in support of this & indeed saw it as something made us unique in senior football. This was all fine while there was no realistic prospect of us falling any lower than League 2.

The advent of the Promotion & relegation from the SPFL, whilst welcome and long overdue, posed an existential threat to the club and as a result, the difficult and for some painful decision, to belatedly turn professional was taken. I don't think there was any particular expectation at the time that within 3 years we would troubling the top end of the Championship: nor was there any inkling that we would  be the beneficiary of significant investment from Willie Haughey.

I would prefer if the details his Lordship's support were more openly available but a cursory glance at where the money is being spent makes it very clear that it is not being used to fund a Gretna style "off the peg" promotion team. It is clearly going primarily towards staff and facilities to enable the club to develop its own homegrown talent some of whom will filter through to the first team and some of whom will move on & generate some income for the club. There have also been considerable efforts to attract new fans  - although unsurpisingly, due to us playing our "home" games 25 miles from home, that has not had much success. This coming season is crucial for this part of the project.

As far as I can see, there is not a QP fan who does not harbour some doubts about the direction the club is going  - particularly the Lesser Hampden debacle, and of course we all worry about the sustainability of the club we support but I think it is also fair to say that most of us are hugely enthusiastic about the many positives  - not least some of the thrilling football we have played in the past couple of seasons.

I find it hard to believe that any of the many doubters on here would be calling on their club to refuse such investment if they were in a similar place to where we were a few years ago.

I mean you definitely referenced our ‘owner’ twice but that’s irrelevant as we already know what you said is wrong.

It is interesting the amount of other teams fans who are so passionate about our sustainability from 2030 onwards. Plenty of work to be done to get us to that point but the intent is there.

I have numerous issues about what’s happened to date, but I’m glad Queen’s are trying to do something different with Beuker’s approach. Whether this all works in a decade who knows but I’d argue there’s very few clubs in Scotland doing more thinking about how the club will be operating in 10 years than we are.

    But, but ,but.... Gretna.
