  1. As there's been some interest in my team here it is so you can admire its genius/idiocy without having to go looking for it.

@Curmudgeon WTAF is your entry all about please? I might be wrong but I don’t think you get double points for a double entry (wrong movie maybe?)….

I wanted to come up with a theme that was even more ridiculous than last year's alphabet themed entry and this is what I came up with.

I had a couple of setbacks during the year as originally I was going to go with 7 pairs of names with number 15 being Andy Goram (before he even announced he had cancer), but that idea was scuppered. I also had to drop James Caan from my list when he selfishly kicked the bucket.

Fortunately there were no other deaths in my list that that gave a reprieve to Brian Cox and Alex Jones who were on standby.

I% is still 1% that won't make it's way into an already shattered economy.    Is it fair that someone in Scotland earning £25k is paying 2% more than the rest of the UK?  They're not exactly high earners FFS.

It doesn't seem fair at all. Although someone in Scotland earning £25k pays less income tax than someone in the rest of the UK so perhaps you should direct your scorn towards Westminster.

I'm confused by the system again.

According to Wikipedia, they've already decided who plays in the semi-finals, to be played around the New Year.

But, BT Sport are listing a bunch of quarter-finals being shown this weekend?

So are the playoff teams set or not? If so, what are the BT games for and do the playoff teams just sit around twiddling their thumbs for three weeks? Why don't they play more rounds?

This weekend's games are for the level below so a different set of playoffs altogether. That's the FCS (Football Championship Subdivision), the more familiar league is the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision).

There's no promotion or relegation between the two, but occasionally a team from the FCS might get invited to join the bigger league.

The FBS playoffs are due to expand to 12 teams in a couple of years' time, which considering there's about 130 teams seems overdue.

Absolutely agree that it's a confusing setup.

I'd  take that Bald Eagle more seriously if it didn't walk like Bernie Clifton.

You've embarrassed yourself here, sarge. It's the ostrich that has the strange walk while Clifton is clearly sitting on its back trying in vain to control the thing.

  6. I'd be surprised if they didn't give it to TCU as they're more deserving of it than Alabama. As they only lost the conference championship game by a bawhair they might even be kept at #3 ahead of Ohio State. My guess is the semi finals might be something like this-

Peach Bowl - Georgia v Ohio State

Fiesta Bowl - Michigan v TCU

Just to see how badly I can get this wrong here's my predictions for the rest of the big bowls.

Rose - Utah v Penn State

Sugar - Alabama v Kansas State

    Orange - Clemson v Tennessee

    Cotton - USC v Tulane

In days gone by, if you got a visit from the joiner you knew your time was up.

They would always carry an umbrella, (more subtle than a foot rule) to measure you up with, (2 umbrellas and a handle) for example.

I can't read this in anything but Abe Simpson's voice.

  8. In the crucial Division A clash Ziggy_The_Spider comes out on top against Board_stupid.

I blew up part way through the game after being in a good position. Ziggy played a bold (or reckless, I'm not sure) knight sacrifice which meant I had to do some serious defending.

I think if I'd managed to come through that spell without losing a piece I might've been ok, but alas it wasn't to be.

I believe that means that Ziggy is this season's champion, a position he very much deserves.

Well played. I was a bit behind for most of the game. According to the analysis I pulled it back dead level, but then made a complete SweeperDee of it at the end.

That would involve telling people they have to be playing at one or other specific time. It would be a nighmare to set up the rules in a completley fair way to handle players in alternate timezones or on nightshifts or whatever. Even just tightening up the time controls is messy - anything faster than one move per day, and you're starting to interfere with people's real lives, potentially forcing them to interrupt their workday or get up in the middle of the night.

    The answer is chessboxing.

Three minutes of chess followed by a three minute bout of boxing. Continue alternating until with the first player to get a checkmate or a knockout is declared the winner. BBC Alba to broadcast it live.

Alternatively a draw in the third match sees black progress. This also has the effect of partly reducing the advantage of being drawn as white.
