  1. Southgate got his tactics right and they seemed to bypass our midfield. Both line ups were similar to Wembley game apart from Bellingham who was awesome. We had a better spell after changes were made in Christie..  I think we need more options up front so we can stretch teams. I don't think we were as bad as some are making out, if mcginn scored it would have been 2-2. Good learning experience.

  2. He did go back a bit but he took the ball under pressure and rarely lost it. Looked ok I thought, can see his technical quality but seem unsure when defending. Also thought he could've made himself available more to take passes but didn't, not sure if that's a confidence issue. He was okay I thought overall.

  3. Whole team is tbf but not forcing his way into starting 11 it seems. Still a young player but likely shodt of confidence. A loan or even a permanent move to a lower level probably would do him good. Would prefer he went Europe.

They started with Maeda up front? He's not even Celtics first choice striker. They're a well drilled side but they're certainly not full of world beaters. Last 16 probably about their level.

They did which I found surprising given kyogo is a better player in my opinion. But I think he was there for his physical attributes (similar to us not playing Griffiths up top on his own).. Up front is their weakest position I'd say but you don't consistently get to knock out stages of WC only by being well drilled, they have good players.

I don’t disagree with any of that but they are not on the same level as England. If they faced each other in this tournament, not sure if that is possible, then everyone would be expecting England to go through, quite rightly, but it would be a tough game for them.

With Scotland, again, it would be a tough game very tough even but I’d still say Scotland would have a good chance of winning it.

Agree I don't think we are far behind, it would be tight but they do have a very good squad. I don't see them being the same level as Canada, Saudi Arabia.. then again I don't know much about Saudi.

Japan do not have a squad on par with England ffs 😂.

It will go down as a shock result but I don’t think anybody would really have been that surprised by it. Japan have a good squad with a lot of players playing at a high level. Similar if not better than Scotland.

    - Tomiyasu (keeps Tierney out arsenal team) on their bench

    - Mitoma at Brighton (been a star so far) on their bench

    - kyogo, hatate from celtic would walk into our starting 11, not even in their squad

Last World Cup they almost beat Belgium (who outclassed England in groups and at 3rd place play off). Most of their players are in Germany (some in other top leagues).. they're  a good side but are underestimated by EPL media in the UK.

I'm far from anti-Clarke but I did find myself thinking similar after watching some of these games. Although I do believe we are slowly getting there I couldn't see us laying a glove on Argentina/Germany etc just now but these teams somehow find a way with (on paper) a far less superior squad.

Japan have a better team / squad than us.

I don't consider it a shock that they beat Germany. Japan are probably on par  player wise with the likes of England, Denmark etc.

Take your point about some of the other teams though who I think we're better than on paper, e.g. Canada

Those people were obviously wallopers tbf. McGinn could play for a team like that in the right role, he's really matured into a quality player.

Brendan rodgers thought so.. I think it would have been toughfor him to begin with.. villa was a good move for him at the time as they were in the championship

We have a good crop of youngsters which imho is a positive so I'm hoping that Steve Clarke (he's not going anywhere thankfully) starts using them in the September qualifying campaign.  Maybe not every single player that I mention lol but it would be good to see at least some in match day squads:

Luis Binks (I know nothing of him so fill me in lol, is he International class or ready?

Nathan Patterson: Hopefully gets a good run in the Rangers team, especially in Europe as that will improve him further

Billy Gilmour: Showed he's ready to be in the team, in fact he should have been in a long time ago!

David Turnbull: Hopefully he kicks on at Celtic and challenges to get into the Scotland team on a regular basis

Allan Campbell: Hopefully has a successful time at Burton and pushes to get into future squads, maybe the next Nations League is more realistic for him.

Now I move on to eligible players, probably ones likely to never play for us, bar one or two.

Ciaran Slicker: Like Binks, I don't know about this guy so fill me in. I see via SFA page that he's been in under 21 squads previously so that may be a sign he's pledged allegiance.

Matt Targett: I don't see him play for us as we have a good crop of Lbs, unless we have him as 3rd choice behind Robertson and Tierney.

Todd Kane or Ryan Fredericks could possibly be the ones that eventually pledge allegiance. I'd say Todd Kane is more likely though I'd like it to be Ryan Fredericks who I would put as our first choice RB with Nathan Patterson second behind him and Stephen O'Donnell 3rd choice behind those 2.

We are in desperate need of a striker to step up from the under 21s though or Karlan Grant to pledge allegiance because we cannot keep relying on Adams, Dykes and Nisbet every match day.  Oliver McBurnie, Lawrence Shankland and Oliver Burke are not good enough for international football imho and I'm fairly certain that Leigh Griffiths won't pull on a Scotland jersey again.

When contributing to this thread I want no personal attacks on mine, or anyone else's opinions and please stay on topic too lol.

Um ok but I'll give my opinion anyway ..

Nathan Patterson should be our first choice right back now.

Turnbull is kicking on at Celtic and should replace Armstrong or even McGinn who could move to a more defensive position.

There's a few players at Bayern, hopefully they can develop.

  10. I find the idea slightly nationalistic (in a bad way)

To be honest there aren't that many scots in london anyway that I can see.. not in comparison to irish, spanish, italian, polish etc anyway.

Ps on millwall, I think the team was started by scots to do with the docks. Millwall area is actually north of the river at isle of dogs (where canary wharf is) but they moved south of the river. there is actually a big scottish influence in east london generally when it was being built up in the early victorian times, particularly in dockland areas.. theres a lot scottish street names.. poplar, plaistow etc have a lot of these but they're elsewhere as well.. I believe this was the scottish entrepreneurs around that time who built houses for the dock workers and named the streets after scottish places.

  11. Agree that he is our player and why do we bother investing in performance schools.. if the sfa decide there is no return on investing in performance schools then people like him will be the reason other young players dont get the opportunity he has...

In fairness I also think it's the coaches fault for not picking him and instead picking players like Campbell, ferguson etc at u21 and being very rigid. Decent players but feel banks should get an opportunity which would also help his development.

Probably get slaughtered for this, and I'm backtracking on previous opinions... but given our fragility in the final 3rd, a fit and firing Naismith might be an astute inclusion in this 23.

Bags of experience, good linkup and strong on the ground and in the air. Has dug the national team out of a hole more than once in the past.
Obviously I'd prefer a shit hot 20 year old McLewandowski, but I'm not sure such a creature is going to emerge before next summer.

Steven fletcher is surely better and has fantastic link up play.

The formation is fine when winning, or against attacking teams.  It is wholly ineffective against teams like Israel who put 10 men behind the ball.  Simply, there aren't enough options.

Other than Forrest and Fraser, I can see no one outside the current squad with any stake to a starting place.

I'd like to see Gilmour getting game time for Chelsea, and then having a shot at being a squad player.

We are desperate for a real goalscorer, and really need another Ryan Fraser-type player.  Our current squad is staggeringly slow.  There's no wonder KT was our best player on Sunday - he appears to be the only player in that squad fast enough to beat a man.

We don't pass it quick enough otherwise, and 3-5-2 means no overloading the flanks so we don't get behind the opposition very often.

Mikey Johnstone fits the bill here. If he can get over his injuries.

I'd also like to see Gilmour (if he plays for first team at club). I feel we should now bring only players that are or are potentially excellent where we have strength, as I dont see point in bringing in more players of a similar or even lower level like ferguson, campbell. They dont improve us imo, just means giving guys less experience for no improvement in quality.
