Squad harmony has been brought up a few times, we don't know if there's squad harmony.

yeah squad harmony is such a throw away cliche. there is squad harmony until the dressing room is "lost" - there is never anything in between. Under Mcleish Mark II there were still players coming out saying the whole squad was behind him and want to play for him. I think you take anything about squad unity with a pinch of salt.

One of the main things I took away from the game was that there is a strong harmony or togetherness within the team and backing for the manager from the players. Steve Clarke essentially pointed to the players performance levels on Wednesday night when he said Ukraine were better on the night. The players accepted that and responded in a positive fashion.

I think at times it can get over-egged but I think the team has a good squad togetherness and you can tell that from their actions.

Its results based yes, and the formation and tactics that we play effect the results.

People will always criticise and discuss tactics and formations regardless of results. Thats the nature of football. But in this instance absolutely everyone is saying the same thing, even clarkes biggest supporters on here aren't denying that we set up wrong.

The only one who seems immune to this is Clarke himself coming out with "what criticism" " They're entitled to their opinion. I don't know what is was because I didn't read it, I didn't hear it, I didn't listen to it"

Which doesn't fill me with confidence hes going to mix things up and try something new.

The position of Scotland manager seems to always bring out the worst stubborn arrogant side of people unfortunately.

That's fair enough mate. I did think Steve Clarke was getting a bit defensive. I guess I just don't agree with you when it comes down to it though - The players held their hands up and said they didn't perform to the required levels so I'm okay taking that at face value in combination with the manager saying Ukraine performed better than us. I just don't see any reason to start pointing fingers,  You can have the last word mate because I don't think we will agree.. 👍

McSauce is in the defence almost as a deep playmaker with some strong defensive attributes in a similar but not identical way to Tierney. It's about giving us another route to  link defence to midfield in addition to McGregor and Gilmour. His performance was mixed on the night but a lot of play went through him, he had the most touches of any of our players. It was a fairly good outlet for us at times against Ukraine even if it didn't function perfectly, maybe more necessary because we didn't have Tierney.

If we use a back four we would lose that variety. It obviously comes with cons - but it's more a risk/reward thing. The back three allows us to have the platform to attack using various different avenues.

I thought he was alright to be fair

The back three is a big issue here

Honestly mate what I took from your post is that we need to change from a back three to back four. People really hate the back three and more hate it still when Scott McTominay is in there - I'm not a tactics guru but I don't have a problem with it.

    • If we play a back three and lose people always say 'should've played a back four'.
    • If we play a back four and lose then it's 'should've stuck with a back three'
    • if we play two up top then 'we should have played an extra midfielder'
    • if we play and extra midfielder 'we should have played two strikers'

    It's just results based.

  4. Ideally the fans would support the team in numbers regardless of results but across most of football that never happens. It seems pretty straight forward to me, the team have to get the fans back on board after the disappointment of last Wednesday.

If we start the NL campaign poorly attendances will decrease but if performances - but more so results - are good people will get more excited and come to see the team. The onus is on the players and team to bring the fans back and I think if we get an attendance around 40,000 tonight I'd say that's really good when you throw in the crappy train issues and the opponents we are playing.

Another 90 min draw and under performance at home added my man, cheers 🍻

I just got back to the house and read through this page. I'm quite new and don't want to be disrespectful but you aren't leaving the best first impression if you spin, manipulate or obscure facts because it suits your argument.

Surely Israel at Hampden in the semi-final must count as well, given that it's the same stage as the Ukraine game? And likewise England at the Euros - why wouldn't it count if the other two group games did?

    6 hours ago, BingMcCrosby said:

You could dress up any qualification game as a crunch game. But if your looking at the big games in the euros and in play offs, we've won 1, drawn 1 and lost 3.

Did you forget to include the play-off semi final win against Israel or don't you consider that a big game?

  7. I think Steve Clarke has been the best thing that's happened to Scotland and I wouldn't support calls to change things because last nights game didn't go well.

    • He has created a good club like feeling amongst the players.
    • Reconnected supporters to the national team.
    • His results have been really good overall including getting us to Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup Playoff.
    • He has involved young players.
    • Trusted Scottish based players.
    • Developed the team to one that is capable of playing a really nice style of football since Euro 2020.

I don't really get why anyone would want him punted just now.

He's apparently having the players start pre-season early and they're going to be the fittest they've ever been. That's going to go down well with the pampered prima donnas in the dressing room that don't like training in the dark and actually having to get their fingers out to earn their ludicrous sums of money. Looks like there's a big culture shock coming under ten Hag and it'll be interesting to see what happens.

I suppose the irony is if he was my boss, I'd probably dislike him - but he seems to be quite a strong personality just from first impressions and as an outside observer I like that single mindedness and focus especially when he says things like he will make his own judgements and draw his own lines.

That's exactly it. You want to experience those huge occasions.

I got ridiculed on the Rangers European thread after I said I was buzzing that we drew Dortmund. Folk were saying I should've wanted an easier draw, but that's not always the case.

Agree in general, Would add that those experiences are less fun if you take an absolute hiding. 😁

Our coaching and playing staff absolutely fucking hated the fans around that time. On the rare occasions we scored they either made an effort to celebrate away from the fans or made an effort to give it "get it up ye" patter toward their own fans.

    I fucking hate Gus McPherson

A club's staff and players can't come out against their own fanbase because the fanbase pay their wages so they generally have to toe the "we love the fans" line, but you know deep down they can get resentful especially when things are going poorly. I'm sure Tommy Wright is another example of someone who found it hard to hide the way he felt about the Kilmarnock support before he got the bullet.

Didn't he swear at their fans or at least argue with them? I can't remember exactly what he did - but it pissed Killie fans off.

  11. 9 hours ago, AsimButtHitsASix said:

Possibly, as doubtful as that is, but his priority should have been getting back to the dressing room and doing his job. Him trying to stare down someone in the stand like a jakie in the pub who's just noticed his ex has a new man was equally embarrassing and hilarious.

haha, I always thought it's more don't bite the hand that feeds with all the rhetoric clubs put out around loving their fanbase. I bet there players and coaching staff who probably hate their own supporters.

Big Newcastle clear out to begin, not unexpected but expect cut price players to clear the decks, wouldn't even be shocked if guys like Wood might be gone now too. The cheque books will be open now and other clubs will salivate at how much they can inflate their mid-level dross...........

That's the ruthless side of football, I wonder if any of their players who were central to helping Newcastle stay up will be sold - that'd be a tough conversation. I will be interested to see how many of the squad Eddie Howe inherited are still at the club at the end of summer 2023, no doubt it won't be many.

Zaha still the most over hyped player in England, he just has no end product.

The other thing i noticed was the amount if time connor gallagher spent on the deck. Decent young player but really needs to cut the diving out.

I thought Zaha was their most threatening player tbh and Ayling did alright against him. Mateta looked shite. I wanted Leeds to win and spent more time watching them losing the ball more than I was looking at the Palace players.

I think we have good options. I wonder how much emphasis will be placed on fitting within the system. To ask a player to come into a new system with new team-mates and minimal training time seems like it might be asking too much and so I wouldn't be surprised if we just saw Fraser and Cooper or McKenna replace the injured guys in those departments.

Agreed, I think Clarke will prioritise guys who are used to the system. How many squads has Paul McGinn been in?

Not sure tbh, none I think - just called in as cover

I'm beginning to get more comfortable with the idea of Robertson at LCB and Hickey at LWB in the event of no Tierney. If Clarke goes along those lines, he's more likely to pick Taylor at LWB I think. RWB sounds an issue though if neither SOD or Patterson are fit. Fraser at RWB? Recall Liam Palmer?!

  16. Rangnick has been running the rule over the Manchester United players, getting the lowdown on who is worth keeping, who is worth selling and who the troublemakers are and he will pass that information on to Ten Haag.

Rangnick seems to likes McTominay based on his complimentary remarks in press conferences and so I don't think in the short term there will be an issue for McTominay, particularly with his contract running until 2025 and Ten Haag likely to have 1 or 2 years grace to rebuild the team. In that time McTominay will have to prove he can make the standard under Ten Haag.

Having the match double as an NL game seems perfectly sensible to me.

I agree, it's okay. Games have simultaneously decided two outcomes in the past - I don't really see the fuss is and why people are getting up in arms over it. Other than it being a bit unusual, the rules are the same for both teams so it's equitable in that sense.

It's not like Ukraine are getting an advantage and just let the best team win.

In the November camp we lost a lot of right sided and central centre back options so John Souttar and Ryan Porteous were logical call ups.

    image.png.4016cd116fb4e076e3b8f9348226fe3d.png

Scott McKenna covers the left side and central area. There isn't really any reason to call up Ryan Porteous or John Souttar unless they can cover the left hand side. We have good cover on the right hand side and the centre is okay.

    image.png.01bc37fdfd5f6e64a5c15912c6b6ec5a.png

I'd be surprised if we didn't see a centre back who is comfortable playing on the left. A left footer would be ideal.

Stephen Kingsley is someone who might be a logical choice or Josh Doig who I believe has been playing on the left of a back three with Hibernian in the last few weeks if you're looking for someone who could grow into the role in the longer term.

I can't really think of too many other possibilities. We don't really have great depth in that area.

It's possible that Greg Taylor, Aaron Hickey or Andy Robertson could be seen as cover. Andy Robertson plays significant minutes as the left centre back when he swaps with Kieran Tierney during Scotland matches and so in the case of an emergency any of the left wing backs could maybe be an option.

A quick search for a left footed defender between 18 and 35 eligible to play for Scotland and over 175 cm revealed this list of players:

    image.thumb.png.39e98ad0c6295011ac70460420f84486.png

    * Aaron Hickey is listed as two footed and so doesn't show on this list.

That post makes a fair amount of sense. I'd say Clarke won't call up American based players at such short notice just fir a friendly which would rule out Stuart Findlay, Danny Wilson or Barry Douglas. Liam Cooper was on the bench I think yesterday - maybe Clarke will change his mind with that and get him back in the squad.
