  1. The English League appear to have started this in 1933, with return matches between two clubs being for their two mid-week fixtures in August and September. I speculate then that the Scottish introduction in 1936 was a variation on this,  but having Saturday and mid-week return fixtures instead. Unfortunately, I have not yet found any reasoning behind the 1933 introduction.

  2. ***NO ADS*** Scottish Football League Info v1.0.2 now promoted to Google Play Store proper for the first time!!!

Currently working on v1.0.3.  Changes so far:

    - faster League Table & Club Information page loading

    - Linthouse F.C. info update (including Billy Connolly reference)

    - Premiership club strip updates courtesy of historicalkits.co.uk

  3. v1.0.2 has now been released. This version includes full league head-to-head records for each club, plus many other club updates and corrections.

I will be looking to promote this particular (Early Access) version shortly to a Play Store "Production Release" for the first time. I'd also like to stress that this has only been made possible by those who have so far trialled the app. So a big thanks from me to the 64 people who currently have it installed on their phone or other android device!

I've been doing a bit of research into old league tables over the last while, and I am struggling to find a good source which clearly identifies the evolution of the tie-break rules for the Scottish League.

As far as I can tell this is how it has developed:

1890/91-1920/21: No tiebreaker. Play-off for important positions (title, re-election/relegation), other teams tied for position.

    1921/22-1970/71: Goal average.

    1971/72-present: Goal difference.

There have obviously been some other minor changes in between (for example the SPFL now uses head-to-head as a final tie-breaker, which wasn't the case in the SPL or SFL).

I wondered if anyone had a source which confirmed this - particularly the introduction of goal average in 1921/22. Wikipedia suggests that in fact goal difference was used in 1921/22, before goal average was adopted the following year, but I believe that this is an error since every other source (including this BBC article) suggests that goal average was brought in for 1921/22. However, I was looking at the Glasgow Herald from the penultimate week of this season, and it mentions the possibility of a play-off if Celtic and Rangers ended up tied for points at the top (which didn't eventually happen).

The use of Goal Average was finally agreed to in Scotland at the Scottish League meeting on June 12th 1907:

"That in the event of equality, apart from the championship, the placing of clubs on the table be decided by goal average."

I researched this when developing my app so that I could give league positions accurately per season, but note that I currently have a typo which means its a season out. I will fix this in the next release.

Opposite of 'Games That Never Were' this is games that were played to a conclusion then voided and played again for whatever reason.

Again a motley collection and I'm bound to have missed some:

Partick Thistle v Abercorn (1894-95)... Partick 4-4 Abercorn on December 1st voided for reason?, replayed on February 23rd finishing Partick 5-1 Abercorn

Hamilton Academical v Arthurlie (1902-03)... Hamilton 2-3 Arthurlie on April 11th voided for reason?, replayed on May 15th finished Hamilton 4-2 Arthurlie

Ayr United v Falkirk (1934-35 SFL I)... Ayr 2-3 Falkirk on March 9th voided for match-fixing and bribery, replayed on April 10th finishing Ayr 3-1 Falkirk

East Stirlingshire v Albion Rovers (1979-80 League Cup R1 2nd leg)... 'Shire 0-0 Albion (1-1 on aggregate) on August 22nd voided for incorrectly being taken straight to penalties (9-8) without extra-time, replayed  on August 27th finishing 'Shire 1-4 Albion

Cowdenbeath v Arbroath (1991-92 League Cup R1)... Cowdenbeath 5-1 Arbroath on August 14th voided for ineligible player, replayed on August 21st finishing Cowdenbeath 1-0 Arbroath

Partick v Abercorn - the teams jointly protested that the referee in their match was incompetent. Their protest was upheld and the official was removed from the referee's list.

Hamilton v Arthurlie - the appointed referee didn't turn up so the match was invalid.

    Nonsense.

Peak Alex Ferguson would be quite unable to compete with the relative wealth the OF have today.

Suggesting he would is just to play the OF's game in claiming that the others just need to up their game.

The landscape Ferguson experienced as a manager in Scotland, is not remotely comparable to that which exists currently.

Nonsense? McInnes came within 9 points just 4 years ago! In other terms, that was only one win at Pittodrie, and a draw in Glasgow against Celtic away from being on equal points with them. So I have no doubt that a manger of the ilk of Fergie could have made that difference with the same set of players, financial circumstances etc., plus turned at least one of our many draws into the additional win that would have been required to lift the 2018 title.

  7. There have been 78852 matches played in all Scottish Leagues from 1890-91 through 2021-22. Breakdown for Home team goals and Away team goals is as follows:

  8. Some other offerings and comments:

Re: 1894-95 (SL2) Renton v Dundee Wanderers. This match was down for September 29th. Renton had already arranged a lucrative match with Queen's Park earlier in the season for this date and had wanted the Wanderers' game rearranged, which didn't happen. The Wanderers were thus awarded the two points for Renton not fulfilling the league fixture.

    1895-96 (SL2) Nov 16th - Motherwell v Kilmarnock - abandoned after 75mins due to bad light.
2-4 result allowed to stand. Note it was was played on the same day as the abandoned-result-allowed-to-stand Partick match.

Re: 1919-20 (SL) Celtic v Dundee - 1-1 result probably allowed to stand as no replay outcome could have affected either team's final league position.

1900-01 (SL2) Hamilton Acad. and Leith Athletic  - were fixed for a re-election play-off match to decide the bottom three league places, but the SFA declined to extend the season to allow it to be played. Both clubs therefore had to apply for re-election along with Motherwell.

1902-03 (SL2) Apr 11th - Hamilton Acad. v Arthurlie - was a void match due to the non-appearance of the referee, yet the result was included in many newspaper league standings. The game proper was played on May 15th.

1906-07 (SL2) Feb 16th - Abercorn v Ayr - abandoned after 78 mins due to bad weather. 1-1 result allowed to stand.

1910-11 (SL2) Nov 12th - Port Glasgow Athletic v Abercorn - abandoned after 80 mins due to fog. 2-3 result allowed to stand.

1914-15 (SL2) Jan 16th - St Johnstone v Cowdenbeath - switched to Cowdenbeath as the Perth ground was unplayable. The League didn't recognise this as an official match so it was ordered to be played again.

1914-15 (SL2) Feb 27th - Lochgelly Utd v East Stirlingshire - abandoned after 77 mins due to snow. 6-1 result allowed to stand.

1934-35 (SL1) Mar 9th - Ayr United v Falkirk - Ayr's Russell refused to play in the match which was won by Falkirk 3-2. It was subsequently found that he had been bribed by Falkirk not to take part, so the match was ordered to be replayed - Ayr winning 3-1.

1996-97 (SL1) Nov 23rd - Falkirk v St Mirren - ordered to be replayed due to playing of ineligible player John Clark

The best, IMHO, is in the 1893-94 Scottish Cup. Our Boys and East End had amalgamated in June 1893 to form Dundee, yet the First Round draw produced:
      Dundee v East End
      Our Boys bye

The Second Round was no better:
      Our Boys v Arbroath
      Strathmore v Dundee

Arbroath of course got a walkover, whilst a Dundee 'A' side lost to Strathmore (Dundee) the same day their first team
was playing a League match at St Mirren.

  9. Many thanks to the 50+ people that have so far downloaded the app. As a heads up, I hope to have a 1.0.0.0 version available for testing within the next week or so. Assuming there are no major issues with this version, then I will look to promote it to Google Play Store proper at the end of August. Significant updates have been made since the last version. These include the addition of numerous ground, team and other photos plus new historic club information that I have unearthed including:- Rangers being named after the "Rangers" from Clapham Common, how the Brechin hedge became famous, Arthurlie's formation from the 1862 cricket club, old Ayr F.C.'s Tom "toe" Crawford, St Mirren's "Greater" Love Street, Bonnyrigg Rose info,  and more... You will also be able to swipe to the next & previous League tables.

  10. Not sure which forum this should be in because it covers all league clubs past & present. (Please move it to a more suitable place if so required). A stable version of my Scottish Football League Info app is now available for Early Access testing from Google Play. This the last step before publishing it on Play Store proper, but I need user feedback in order to get there!

    Download from here:

  11. Thought you might want to know about your club's origins, from research I did in support of my forthcoming "free" Scottish League android phone app:

Association football was first organised in Alloa by Henry Goodyear, who requested a meeting on September 16th, 1879, at St John's School, where he was a principal assistant. Clackmannan County was formed at this meeting, with Henry being elected as captain, no doubt as he'd played previously for his home town of Belbroughton prior to moving to Alloa. He impressed against King's Park despite their 5-0 defeat, and guested for the Stirling club against Hayburn (Partick) in April 1880. He played in the forward line alongside James Rigg in this match. Henry left the area in July 1880 to attend a scholarship at Warminster College for Missionaries. It was reported that “dissatisfaction sprung up amongst the members” of the County club and, at a meeting instigated by James Rigg at M'Gechaen's Hall, on August 6th, 1880, “Alloa Football Club” was formed with Rigg as their first captain. James was a cabinet-maker and upholsterer by trade, and worked in Alloa. The club shortly changed its name to “Alloa Association Football Club.” Alloa played several matches against Clackmannan County that season. The Dunfermline secretary, Mr J.H. Irvine, misinterpreted “A.A.F.C” to be “Alloa Athletic” in their 2d XI's fixture against Alloa on November 13th, 1880, resulting in them being called this in the Dunfermline press. The Alloa committee liked this name better and so adopted it for the 1881-82 season onwards. In season 1882-83 they ditched their blue jerseys for the orange and black, from which the "Wasps" nickname was coined as early as 1886.
