I know it doesn't really matter but who would you rather have, Raith or County, for next season? I'll go for County getting relegated - only because I want a couple of games nearer where I live given that Caley decided to go to the seaside.  🙂

Rovers to remain in the Championship.  Simon Murray enjoys banging in goals against Rovers and to be perfectly honest I couldn’t be bothered watching him knocking in hatricks for County against us next season.

    £4.5m for 4,000 spectators.

Capacity of The City stadium, what, under 1,000.  How much did we spend on it again?

Likewise sad to see Tommy go but when we played with a back four it looked to me at least that he was getting caught out defensively more often than a player of his experience should.

I put this down to a number of factors, the most heavily weighted of this being Veldman's tactics, as let's face it, the entire team was being caught out for the first six months of the season.  I fail to believe you become a poor player overnight and he always was Mr Consistent, but certainly as I've stated before, it seemed there was a drop off after Murray left, (I believe they were mates off the park as well as on).

The first 6 months of the 22/23 campaign with him, Thomas, Savoury and Murray tearing teams apart will live long in the memory - along with many of his goals for the club.

As you said, it's been the tactical change that's done for him rather than his ability.  Wish him all the best for the future.

In no way defending McKinstry’s performance levels but I do recall the support being unsure on Simon Murray who after a full pre-season set the league on fire for 6 months.

Not comparing the two in any way, just hoping that a full preseason would benefit the lad and mean a significant upturn in performance level.

I suppose the difference was that Murray was coming back from an ACL injury, (that resurfaced on a foggy afternoon in Montrose half way through the L1 campaign).  As ever am willing (and hoping) to be proven wrong.

  5. With Sheridan off-ski, I'd hope that there's someone identified to come in as otherwise Paton (if he remains) will be doing a lot of heavy lifting next season.  Would be surprised if Savoury leaves as having a year out with injury I'd be surprised if he has many suitors.  Sad to see Robson go but looking forward to him heading back to Falkirk where he'll probably rip us to shreds next season.

We've been experimenting with 3-4-1-2 with Dom Thomas behind Paton & Sheridan so I think Welsh, Savoury, Turner and Thomson make up a decent pool to pick from in the middle of the park. However, I wouldn't say no to a man-eating no 6 with an extra set of lungs.

You'd need Scott and AN Other as the wide players in the 4, most likely Savoury would play in that central 10 role, so the two in the middle would be from Thomson, Thomas, Welsh, Turner.  A brave man it'd be to drop Thomas, so if he and Savoury become the creatives it leaves no place for Tino. You're then left picking from Thomson's dynamism or Welsh's experience.....and I can't see either being overly happy on the bench.  Probably my main bug-bear about the system is that the extra CB means that we can't really field our strongest 11....unless Thomson is content with being one of the 3 at the back.

Still, Davidson's signings have all been spot on so far, presumably because he uses his eyes and brain to pick his targets rather than an algorithm so I have faith in him.

Amen to that.  Had forgotten about Oakley, had put him firmly into the 'RB sticking plaster' list.

I'm sure it's unintentional (or just very, very unfortunate) but every time I hear McKinstry interviewed he just sounds rather arrogant, almost a vibe of being better than where he's ended up - in stark contrast to his performances imho.  With a fit and functioning Grant Savoury I just dont see where he fits into the side - other than on the bench.

I concluded on here a few months back that he was a lost cause under Veldman and honestly thought he wouldn’t have made it past January at the club but Davidson has thankfully got a tune out of him. Had a wee bit of digging and since Davidson joined the club, Tizzard started 6 matches and 5 of which have resulted in clean sheets

I think we all had, but ain't it wonderful and life affirming how a positive influence and man management style, (plus playing with two aside and not one) can make such a change.

If it looks like we are now playing that 3/5 at the back formation then a dynamic, progressive RWB is a must and certainly if Danny Imray is anything like Josh Scott then we'll be onto a winner and the RHS has been the weaker for a number of years now; how many sticking plaster RB's have we had since L2?

Get the concerns with young talent from down south but on the whole I think we've struck if not gold then promise more often than not.  Longstaff a disappointment and [David?] Boateng didn't last long, but in the last few years Fox, Mal Boateng, Turner, Spong & Tizzard have all shown to be capable of playing at Championship level.

Exactly this. Robson, Thomas and Murray, the inter-play of those 3 under Coyle was special. Murray left and Robson (also took the armband) was never the same.

Savoury too, the four of them were, at times, unplayable.  I didn't really appreciate it at the time but the work Murray did in stretching and occupying defences left Savoury and Thomas with time and space to create.  Connor Shields didn't quite seem to have/give the same aura, (or fear factor) to the opposition.

Think the thing that I’ve learned from attending this season is that QP’s fan base aren’t actually as old as they look, it’s just the stress of watching them…

In just about every interview that Davidson has done, he’s referenced ‘doing something’ about the atmosphere at Hampden (and that home record). It’s clearly on his mind.

Apart from, y’know, competently developing a small stadium, perhaps in the shadow of the big one, what could the club practically do next season to make it a better experience for the fans and the players?

Well, since I started watching QP as a nipper back in the late-80's when the crowd was pretty much just players' family members/friends, when God forbid anyone shouted, (let alone sing), the atmosphere has come on leaps and bounds.  Other than a fit for purpose stadium, the only suggestion I have is to install more of that plastic sheeting around the ground….in the wind it gave a passable ersatz-crowd noise!!!

As the season is over now, had a wee look to see who’s contracted/out of contract/loan ended

    Contracted for next season:

Ferrie, Wilson, Tizzard, Bannon, Fox, Turner, Welsh, Thomson, Thomas, Paton, Healy, Williamson, McLeish, Mauchin, Reid

    Out of contract/Loan ended

Sheridan, Jarrett, Scott, Longridge, Robson, Savoury, Carse, Mckinstry, Wills, McPherson, Bruce

So officially, we have 15 players with us for next season as of right now, although I struggle to see any sort of future for Williamson and Healy. Get Sheridan, Scott, Savoury and maybe a longridge signed up and supplement with an extra 4-5 quality additions and I think (hope) we’re In for a much enjoyable season

Obviously there’s going to be admirers for Paton and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Thomson get picked up by someone given he’s now coming in to the final year of his contract

    Who are people keeping/letting go

Don’t feel I’m qualified enough to comment given I’ve only seen QP lose this season, (bar Arbroath), but that’s never stopped me before.

A lot will depend upon how Grant Savoury fares when he returns.

Would like to see how the Sheridan-Paton axis works with a fit Savoury.  I honestly thought we had Josh Scott tied down for longer, so would be amazed if he wasn’t offered an extension, if so that’d likely see Robbo go; likewise Longridge for just being Mr Dependable all season deserves at least another year. Bruce is developing nicely so wouldn’t make sense to let him go.  Haven’t seen enough of Carre and Wills.  Would be surprised if alls ok with Savoury whether McKinstry would be required at all.

Of those under contract, if Savoury comes back, I wonder where in the pecking order Turner is.  Before his injury I could see us listening to offers for Fox, (though I’d dearly like him to stay), and I think the summer will show us how happy, or not, Thomson is to playing CB.

Whatever happens we need a RB

  12. How are the hang overs people?

Two seasons in the Championship and they have been two seasons of complete opposites.  The first, hope to just stay in, followed by six months of great football, wins and memorable goals, followed by the painful slipping away of our lead to that weird, weird and ultimately depressing night at Ochilview vs Dundee.  This year, hope of another title challenge fell away after two games v Arbroath to the more of a likely relegation.  Coaches, Managers, DoF’s and CEO’s all departed along with the grand plan, but up stepped Davidson with some assured signings to get us, eventually to safety.  To paraphrase, thank £&#& that’s over with!

God knows what’ll happen next year, but given it’s QPFC, I’m sure it won’t be easy!, however we can start with adidas giving us a belter of a kit.

  13. Watched the Airdrie - Utd game on TV last Friday and must say Airdrie were excellent, really good to watch; McCabe's done so well this year and he/they are most definitely worthy of the play-offs - chapeau!

I'd be fearful for this one if it wasn't for one thing in that due to work changes I've not made many games this season - about ten or so and in that time have only seen QP win once, vs Arbroath at Lesser.  I'll be working again on Friday, which evidently means a QP win!

And yes, watching big Dunc be sent to the stands at Annan would be fun.

Depends entirely on whether Haughey continues to throw money at the QP project or decides to scale things back completely.

If QP had to survive as a professional club with their miniscule fan base they'd be heading for return to places like Coatbridge and Berwick.

Arbroath are an established semi professional club with a decent sized support who are in no danger of dropping like a stone if one man decided to walk away.

Well, if our fan base continues to grow at the rate it has done over the past 2-3 years then we should be fine.
And if we continue down the route of youth development and continue to find and sell on players like Callun McKenna we should be even finer.
    Thanks for your concern though.

Dragging QP into the relegation playoffs would be interesting if you ended up getting relegated to burst "The Journey" bubble.

It's a marathon, (the 'journey'), not a sprint; we have been honking for the vast majority of this season, but for all the jokes about our defence etc, you've shipped almost 80 goals.  I'm not, generally speaking, a betting man, but if we go down via the play-offs, as 'interesting' as it would be for you, I'm fairly certain who'd I'd wager will be coming back up soonest.

  16. Beuker had credit in the bank given the promotion to the Championship from L2 and in some of the signings that he was at least part of, (Savoury, Boateng, Thomas, Paton etc), so it was a reasonable assumption that he had done the homework and that we granted a degree of trust in Veldman's ability.  Hindsight is a wonderful thing but it does seem mad that we took a youth coach from the continent, gave him an eclectic bunch of kids and asked him to make an assault on the Championship..

    You live and learn.

Here’s one to ponder. How do we think Veldman would have got on this season if he had Sheridan, Wilson and Welsh (plus McKinstry & Scott) from the start?

Impossible to say as given ‘the project’, Welsh, Wilson and Sheridan would all have been around 10+ years too old to have even been considered.

  18. I very much doubt Haughey has spent however much he has spent to watch us play Stirling Albion four times a year and would assume that Davidson will be under some pressure to ensure that if we do go down this season, we come straight back up again next year.  He should probably be given the opportunity to squad build in the summer so at the very least he lives/dies by his team and not Veldman/Beukers’.

What worries me slightly is that obstensibly he’s improved our attacking options with the addition of Sheridan, whilst getting a like for like, if not better screen in front of the defence in Welsh for Spong, but in doing so he’s almost halved the amount of goals scored, (even taking into account the six against Arbroath). We might be hard(er) to beat but if you can’t score you’re always likely to be looking over your shoulder and certainly won’t be troubling the top half of any league table; not ideal if you’re trying to maintain a presence in a very competitive Championship. I worry, given recent performances and throughout his time in Perth, he just might not be able to turn that around…..though will look forward to be proven wrong.

    Is Davidson a fraud?

    Jury out for me.

For the defence, the QP team that got so close last year lost its spine (literally).  Murray going allowed defences to get on top of the other two standout front men in Thomas and Savoury who’s was instrumental and who we’ve been unable to replace.  Behind them I thought initially we had a decent replacement for Boateng in midfield in Spong but for whatever reason he left shortly after Davidson arrived.  I don’t think we realised at the time what we lost when we let Kilday go either.  We were (with hindsight) always going to struggle with those players missing.
He has signed a decent replacement for Spong/Boateng in Welsh and pulled another rabbit out of the hat with Sheridan to at least give Paton some restbite, who, IMHO, we’ve done a disservice to with the lack of service he’s been provided.

That said, we’ve never found a full time right back, and instead of signing one in January, to allow us to play with a RWB, we brought in another left back which has ousted Robson either to CB or the bench. We signed a proven CB but then rather than using him to assist the younger less experienced CB’s to allow the addition of another player either in midfield or attack, we’ve used him in a back three, usually alongside a midfielder. He also seems unwilling to ditch ‘his’ system which has seen a reduction in goals scored and none scored in the last 6 hours of play.  That in itself has not been helped by a belligerence not to play Turner in his best position and a reliance on a very over confident and under performing McKinstry, (though I appreaciate he showed improvement today)

Hes been dealt a shitty hand that much is true but I do worry he might start running out of excuses.
