It might just be my individual situation (40 odd year old, been going to FP for 30+ years, young family taking up more of my time).

But yesterday was really a prime example of how I am beginning to struggle with watching us. Probably should be happy getting a point from that but again come away with a very 'meh' feeling.  Aware of the various reasons but the lack of quality throughout and lack of tactical nous/plan B/managerial stubborness is wrestling me down I have to say.

I'm not chucking my season ticket or anything but I'm finding increasingly easy to miss games for other events etc.

Really really hope next season Kettlewell can build an identity that is pleasant to watch, has some sort of other system that doesn't rely on wingbacks and can get more MFC academy players into the team

That’s exactly how I am feeling and how I felt walking out the game yesterday. Actually feeling very meh about the club at the moment.

Just something about this team and some of the the players which I just can’t seem to gel with. Lack of fight, error strewn, no leadership, I just don’t know. I can’t put my finger on it.

Where as watching wee Gent and Davor both give they’re all. Trying to encourage and lead from the front I get that and enjoy it.

Actually disagree with this. He's made players better, recruitment has actually been good, the patterns of play exist, we score fucking loads of goals.

I genuinely don't know how you legislate for players of McGinn's experience doing stuff like that today. Or Halliday missing that header. Or that Butcher has forgotten how to play football.

Tactically tho, he this year imo made a shed load of mistakes. Even today it was crying out for the team to move to Vale beside Bair and Spittal in the 10. The formation just was not working.

I like him but he has made so many stupid errors that has realistically cost us a lot of points. Over thinks formations and is ridiculously stubborn in his approach.

Presumably he's the one mentioned in January but his deal (at least initially) was to the end of 2023 so you wonder what the hold up was, if we were just unsure etc, did he hold out for another offer etc.

If the delay was on our wish, fair play...the feeling of having to have any striker to present at 2359 on deadline day must have been big.

Yip. That’s the lads. Fitness concerns was one as has been out for a bit. Not sure if permit was/is an issue.

Guys goals to game record from out wide is pretty decent aswell.

As we have seen before, social media can create a bit of a false impression...

There are a lot of people who don't use it or enter forums like this one. I would imagine people within that demographic make up a fair chunk of the members.

One thing I would say is the turn out (albeit to a poll) is dreadful and should be taken into account.

Does beg the question, for a poll as important as this one. If folk cba to vote on it, how enthusastic will be there for further contributions etc?

Absolutely this. Plus let’s face it the No voters are a lot more vocal and some Yes voters wouldn’t raise their heads above the parapet to be abused like I saw a fair amount off.

I personally also thought the vote was too ambiguous and wooly to get a true and accurate vote and reflection.

Just putting it into the mix but I'm reliably informed that Bevis was to be dropped on Wednesday with Butcher replacing him. Butcher however got injured in training----yet another to add to the injury stats.

That would have been a ridiculous decision if true. Drop our only tall defender for Butcher against Livi FFs.

Im sure it’s common knowledge what the rumours are.

Allegedly a young missing girl from London was found in his flat in Hamilton. He got taken off the bus at Tynecastle by the police. This is the alleged rumour and I have no idea if true.

This has been said about Livi for a long time and I don't really agree with it. Not sure about this season but last season the average height of our team surely must have been one of the lowest in the league.

Over the years I think our tenacity and pressing/in your face style has been deemed as "big physical hammer throwers".

This season we really haven't epitomised "a big strong physical team" at all.

I’m think Yengi, Obileye, Nouble, Kelly. All big lads. We only have Mugabi & Bair in the starting 11 over 6ft I think. That includes our midget goalie. You are bigger than us….

What a fucking turn of events this is btw.

    Utter game changer.

Onto the game tonight. Livi have a big strong physical team who put balls in the box, at least we have a commanding defence who don’t concede from headers…. Oh wait.

Need to stick with the same starting 11 as the weekend and hope Bevis has one of his magnet head games and we get down and at them with the pace of Gent, Spittal,. Devine and Vale. Here’s hoping.

I mean, expecting him to walk into the starting XI or off the bench within a month of arriving at a new club, with little to no match-fitness is a bit harsh. Also, he's had what, two(?) bad knee injuries which might be catching up with him.

There's a distinct possibility we'll come to the reality that as Motherwell fans we got to see the absolute best of DT.

💯 get that. However surely he is good enough for that Cardiff side. We all know the class the lad has. Even since his injuries.

I might have rose tinted glasses however and don’t hide that fact.

100%. The obvious compare is Lewis Ferguson at Bologna. When they were both coming through I would have said Turnbull was the superior player, but watching Ferguson strolling round Serie A these days is tremendous. Also Bologna's a fucking brilliant city.

This video is also excellent on the Scotland YouTube channel:

I think all Motherwell fans would have thought DT was far superior a player however not looking that way at all. It is class seeing Ferguson progressing even though I thought he was a fanny at Aberdeen.  I just think Turnbulls style and ability will have been perfect for Italy. Idiot wanting to stay in Scotland for a bird.

I think that's the big part of it.

If Halliday were available, he'd have been a dead cert to come in the last 15/20 mins to help Davor.

It does show just how threadbare we are; we have a bit of a generational gap in the youth team in that we don't really have any players in the 19-21 range (by Kettlewell's doing, he said as much last week; he didn't feel any were good enough to ever make it) who could help plug that kind of gap. Also, if we were looking to a player that age to see out a game, that would be quite concerning, too.

He probably would have started and Paton aswell tbh.

Just shows how shit our January window was in my opinion. In fairness injuries to Montgomery, Halliday, Paton and Jili-gate has weakened the squad aswell.

Makes you wonder what the script is with Elliot. Reading about him he would on paper be a straight like for like replacement for Devine at RWB. Would offer pace to get up the pitch and close Celtic down. However he went for the usual sub of SOD’s.

Even then he also went for Blaney to LWB for Gent instead of Elliot.

I do kind of get his reasoning behind some of his tactics but the players do not have the physical capability to carry them out.

  11. 12 minutes ago, StAndrew7 said:

This is Kettlewell's biggest failing as a coach for me; his subs are quite often based on how tired, lacking legs etc. we are towards the end of games. He doesn't react to other managers/teams changing their set up effectively to nullify new threats/their Plan B. Aberdeen is the perfect example of that, as much as Sunday was. It was obvious Davor needed help but he just didn't get that and it led to Celtic being camped in our half for basically the entire second half.

Absolutely this. Cost us against Aberdeen, Hearts and to an extent Celtic.

Doesn’t help either that our bench options are brutal.

Waiting until Celtic got 40 yards out before pressuring them is what killed us most I reckon in that last 10 mins. Absolute criminal.

    Yip, 💯.

Losing the energy, pace and closing of Gent, Devine and more importantly Vale killed is. Coupled with Bair tiring and Celtic swapping their DM in Iwata for a Bernardo and giving wee Davor two men to mark let them push higher up. We didn’t combat it at all.

  13. 18 minutes ago, thisGRAEME said:

Like, Butcher was not good in that moment in that he did the thing that centre-halfs can't do, by letting the centre forward get across him. However; what the f**k was Blaney doing? Ball watching while Johnston, who'd been a threat throughout the second half was standing without him even looking at him. Come on man.

A common theme since his return from Butcher is two fold, getting wrong side of the attacker and also backing two far off.

So far in 2024 he has been bodied by Sammon, Oakley and now Idah. The latter apart, none of whom are decent.

Agree re Blaney, but it did look like what it was, a centre half playing left back. He auto went to default on positioning.

There's no doubt that people would be on here asking for subs had they not happened, but for me, disorganisation cost us more than tiredness.

But suppose the five subs do need to take place when they did:

74 minutes - Vale and Casey need to be withdrawn. Bring on Nicholson and Blaney and the other 9 players stay where they are.

84 minutes - Devine and Miller need to be withdrawn. Bring O'Donnell on for Devine, Shaw on for Miller and move Spittal (rather than Nicholson) back into midfield with Davor.

89 minutes - if Gent has to go off, surely Elliot could just about see out stoppage time with a settled defence.

I imagine we prepared for this game with players in a shape and structure we planned to play in. We went from making no changes in the first 74 minutes to ending the game with only 3 of our 10 outfield players in the position they started the game in so I would definitely say there's merit in the shout that changes were at least part of our undoing.

Of course, Wednesday is the bigger game but it's still helluva frustrating not to take anything from today.

Agreed, that makes too much sense. Butcher no where near that team to allow Idah to run him ragged. Absolute shell of the player from prior to his injury.

Biggest disappointment was I lost my membership card, my own fault and couldn’t get a replacement 😂

Membership Card? Don’t think I got one of those bad boys lol. Maybe I did but it was 7 years or so ago.

I didn’t get one of the pies they dishes out previously either that was a bummer. However not a surprise as usual suspects who got them. Not that I’m salty….

I've got to admit to never having gotten round to signing up to the Society so excuse my ignorance, but after these discussions over the past few days it's something I'm going to put right soon.

The blurb on the 'fishal page is minimal and obviously gives the options of membership at £5, £10, £25, and £50 bands with no clear distinction if each upward increment affords you any more benefits, or if it's just a matter of which one you can afford and everyone being equal.

To that end, is it possible for folk to commit to a regular payment in-between these preset values? For instance, someone currently paying £25 a month may find jumping up to £50 a stretch, but might feel they could more comfortably offer £30 or £35. Is it/could it be an option for individuals to choose their own monthly sub? Perhaps it is but it's just not made clear. I Don't know the in's and out's of it, but with every penny a prisoner on both the fans' and the club's side, maximum flexibility could help in eeking out a few more precious £££'s if folk don't feel they could commit to the next level, but could spare an extra fiver every month instead.

I’ve been paying since the very beginning a nice little amount a month and received zero benefits.

Have asked a few times for statements and what tier etc I’m at and get usually a very wooly response and the last response about 6 months ago, I’ll look into it and get back to you. Nothing so far.

Don’t get me a wrong I didn’t sign up for the benefits but it is piss poor the comms on that front.

  17. I think everyone at the moment need to get their emotions in check. From both sides of the spectrum on the WS may I add.

We are going through a pretty shit time at the moment on and off the pitch so it’s understandable people are looking going this isn’t working… we are fucked etc etc.

Whats not not working.. f**k knows …but the Well Society and board are the first to be shot at along with manager etc when the fiscal aspects look grim.

When you factor in the current world financial climate I am sure it is becoming harder for people to justify putting more money into a club to keep it running to their family (wives). I know I keep deflecting questions on that front.

So reservations might be coming from that and wanting to pap the responsibility onto others.

I have my own issues with the WS, lack of comms, input and actual feel at times sold a bit of a banger with a few aspects initially. Selfishly about ‘rewards’ ‘tiers’ what ever you want to call it. 7 years of outing money in a month and genuinely had little if any feedback. But that can be worked on.

I don’t think the petty bickering, name calling, snideness will help and will I think drive some folk away from investing or being bothered.
