Under 21s Tonight

Just like to say congrats to our under 21s, with Rainer Bonhoff getting one over on his country, with Maloney scoring only goal in our win over the Germans.

Hopefully that is a sign of things to come, and we can get a decent result tomorrow. (remember we won last time we went to Germany).

COME ON SCOTLAND

No but from what i remember weve had a couple stupid results so were not in the chase really. (i know we lost to lithuania and someone else too i think)

I could be wrong tho. Problem with under 21s you gotta win your group to go through to playoffs.

Young Scots sink Germans

Shaun Maloney drills home the winner for Scotland

Germany U-21 0-1 Scotland U-21

Scotland's Under-21s have given themselves a great chance of winning European Championship qualifying Group Five, following a fantastic away win in Germany.

Celtic's Shaun Maloney came on as a second half substitute for Rainer Bonhof's side and scored the game's only goal.

The Scots were under pressure for long spells, with Dundee goalkeeper Derek Soutar making a series of fine saves and Celtic defender Stephen Crainey twice clearing the ball from the goal-line.

Scotland now stand alongside the Germans on 10 points and will win the section if they can take maximum points from Lithuania on home soil next month.

Germany made a strong start to the match and Christian Tiffert fired in a powerful drive from outside the box that Soutar did well to parry then hold.

Soon after, Soutar made an impressive reflex stop to deny Mimoun Azaouagh after a clever pass from Sascha Riether had sliced open the Scottish defence.

Benjamin Auer beat the Scottish defence to get on the end of a Azaouagh free-kick but the striker headed a good chance narrowly wide.

The first chance of the game for the Scots arrived in the 28th minute and it was a solo effort from Motherwell's Stephen Pearson, who went on a run down the left before firing in a long-range shot across goal.

Soutar was in action again when Alexander Madlung was on the end of an Azaouagh free-kick into the box only for the goalkeeper to tip the centre back's goal-bound header over.

The Germans were on top again at the start of the second period and Madlung blazed over from a good position before Markus Feulner showed skill in the penalty box to make room for a shot, but also made a hash of the finish.

Scotland had to withstand a lot of German pressure

Scotland swapped Simon Lynch for Maloney in the 52nd minute and the little Celtic striker made his presence felt ten minutes later.

A Crainey tackle gave possession to Ian Murray and the Hibs man carried the ball forward before finding substitute Darren Fletcher, who slipped the ball to Maloney, who slotted home a cool finish.

There was a real let-off for the Scots soon after when a shot from Azaouagh cannoned back off the inside of Soutar's left-hand post and it needed Crainey on the line to deny Auer's attempt to bundle the ball in.

As the game became stretched and the Germans left gaps at the back, Maloney was only just inches wide with a header.

The home side poured forward in the closing stages and Crainey made another block on the goal-line before Soutar pulled off a super tip over to deny Hanke's header.

Lithuania, who have already beaten Bonhof's team, will win the group if they beat Scotland again.

But Germany, who were held 2-2 at Rugby Park earlier in the campaign and face Iceland in their final match, will lose out to Scotland if they finish level on points.

England U21s crash out

England U21 1-2 Portugal U21

Postiga's helping hand sparked uproar

England's Under 21s suffered European Championship heartbreak as David Platt's side crashed out of the tournament in highly-controversial circumstances.

Platt's players were heading for a deserved draw against Portugal at Goodison Park as they fought to salvage their qualifying hopes for next summer's finals.

But with 11 minutes remaining, Tottenham's £6.25m summer recruit Helder Postiga used his hand to steer a Hugo Viana free-kick beyond stand-in keeper Lee Grant.

Earlier, Ricardo Quaresma had given Portugal the lead before Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton capped a fine display by stabbing home an equaliser.

Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi, named man-of-the- match, called the referee's failure to spot Postiga's use of the hand as "scandalous."

"I couldn't believe some of the decisions the referee was making," he said. "I think the way he handled the game was very poor.

"To get a decision like that against us is scandalous. It has cost us the chance to go to the Championships."

Quaresma celebrates Portugal's opener

Fury erupted among the England players, who confronted Greek referee Athanassios Briakos, while Platt was outraged after watching the replay on the giant screen in one corner of the ground.

His side can not now finish in the top two and make the play-offs, rendering their final game in Turkey next month meaningless.

England lost Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland in the warm-up after he suffered a groin problem, and his replacement Grant was at fault for Portugal's opener.

Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo won a free-kick after his nifty footwork proved too much for Chelsea full-back Glen Johnson, and Grant could only help Quaresma's curling effort into the net.

Quaresma, poached by Barcelona in the summer, almost made it two with a first-time effort from a sharp angle which Grant beat away.

The keeper then tipped away a curling Postiga shot from the edge of the area before England levelled nine minutes before the break.

Paul Konchesky lofted a free-kick into the area for Ameobi to flick towards Jeffers, back at Goodison Park ahead of his second Everton debut.

In attempting to carve out a shooting chance, Jeffers saw the ball fall to Barton, whose effort trickled home off the inside off the right-hand post.

The second half belonged entirely to England with David Prutton and Barton going close before Ameobi and Jeffers combined to force another save from Portugese keeper Moreira.

Johnson then elected to go for glory with his two strikers better placed, and Jeffers' frustration increased as he was booked for a challenge on Moreira.

Platt was then involved with a war of words on the touchline with Portuguese counterpart Jose Pratas Romao as Postiga's winner saw tempers flare.
