Numancia Posted July 13, 2015 Share Posted July 13, 2015 It's not really a club name but Beith used to be nicknamed the Cabes, apparently because of the SCWS furniture factory in the town and the fact that so many locals worked there as cabinet makers. It seems that some folk pronounced "cabinet" as "cabe-net", hence the name. I also remember being told that Beith players used to get paid in sausages because at one time the head honcho at the club was a local butcher. That might have been during their time in the old Alliance League but I can't swear to that. It's interesting that Kilbirnie seem to have adopted the term "Blasties" after the closure of the steelworks while Beith dropped the "Cabes" moniker and, for reasons unknown, became known as "The Mighty" after the closure of the furniture factory. I remember some old timers years ago referring to Kilbirnie as the "bum-bees" (not "bumble bees). I would not like to speculate on the reason for this though.
