East Kilbride 1 Celtic XI 3

New Celtic signing Kundai Benyu scored on his Celtic debut as he helped a Hoops XI beat Lowland League leaders East Kilbride.

East Kilbride enjoyed a good pre-season workout as they put up a spirited fight at K-Park.

Billy Stark's Kilby will be pleased with their performance as they frustrated the talented Hoops for 50 minutes before the game came to life with four second half goals.

Strikes from Mark Hill and Benyu put the Hoops in control and although Kieran Gibbons scored with a stunning strike to get EK back into it, Thomas Caffrey's late solo effort sealed the win for the Hoops.

New Celtic signing Benyu, who signed for the club from Ipswich last week, was among a few recognised faces who started at a sun-drenched K-Park with Calvin Miller, Jack Aitchison and Aidan Nesbitt among the first 11.

It took 18 minutes for Celtic to really threaten the Kilby defence. Nesbitt's cross to the back post picked out Benyu but the unmarked midfielder narrowly failed to connect.

Midway through the first half Kilby keeper Jacob Kean had to be at his best to deny Nesbitt the opener, palming away his point-blank header at the back post.

Early in the second half Kilby's resilience was eventually broken, as Celtic strike twice in two minutes.

In 49 minutes Kilby went to sleep and allowed Mark Hill far too much time on the edge of the box to line up his strike and he fired the ball past Kean into the bottom corner.

From the re-start Kilby created a good chance with Martin McBride's strike bringing a save out of Ross Doohan in the Hoops goal. But the visitors broke straight upfield and when the ball found Benyu, he turned his marker on the 18-yard line before lashing the ball past Kean.

Celtic then made a host of changes with eight players coming on and the likes of Benyu and Nesbitt departing the field.

In 63 minutes Kilby went close when trialist Ross Caldwell had a shot cleared off the line.

But two minutes later EK did find the net – and in some style. Kieran Gibbons collected the ball 25 yards out and curled the ball into the net to get the hosts back in the game.

However, any hopes EK had of snatching a draw were extinguished in 74 minutes when Hoops sub Thomas Caffrey weaved past three players and found the bottom corner with a low drive.

Kilby now look forward to a bounce match against Airdrieonians on Tuesday night before welcoming Hamilton Accies to K-Park next Saturday in their opening match of the Betfred Cup.

£20,000 is some bonus for not getting up. Seems a lot just to win the Lowland League!
