Stupid referee thread

Recommended Posts

It's surprising that there isn't a dedicated thread for the clowns that ruin games with their idiocy.

Here's a classic example - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/43314870

"Referee Dean Hulme asked Sanchez Watt, who was playing for Hemel Hempstead Town, for his name as he was about to be booked in a National League South game against East Thurrock United.

The 27-year-old repeatedly replied: "Watt" but Hulme believed he was saying "what?" and sent him off for dissent."

Appears now that the Ref cancelled the card when the Home captain pointed out the mix up. I once read an account of the career of the legendary Hughie Gallagher in  1927. It claimed that he had been about to be booked by the Referee on a misty day , who demanded his name. Gallagher replied by saying "What's your name?"   and he was told it was Fogg,   Gallagher then said "You've been in one all game "  and was then sent off. Unfortunately I checked it today on Wikipedia and it claims Gallagher had actually dumped the Ref in the team bath after the game and was suspended for two months , but it makes no mention of being sent off during the game. Maybe some one else can confirm my earlier account. As for Clown Referees I submit the name: Davie Syme

Here's another from Margate - https://www.kentlive.news/sport/football/football-news/chelsea-margate-laughing-red-card-1309718

"Gate ended the match with nine men after Sam Blackman and Jordan Chiedozie were shown red cards in injury-time. Blackman received a second yellow for simulation. Chiedozie, however, was dismissed in rather bizarre circumstances. In something more akin to You've Been Framed, Chiedozie appears to have been given his marching orders for 'laughing' after a Leiston player tripped himself up."

Great stuff.

I love the line in the piece saying the ref was "man enough" to rectify the error.  Picture of the incident from BBC.

Hemel Hempstead forward Sanchez Watt is shown a red card
