Co.Down Hibee Posted June 4, 2018 Posted June 4, 2018 Fine management team at Glentoran now, happy to see Gary "Smicker"Smyth back at the Oval, didn't do too bad with the Welders and has a good crop of young guys there who'll most likely end up at the Oval....some of them anyway. 0 Quote
H Wragg Posted June 6, 2018 Posted June 6, 2018 Institute to play at The Brandywellhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44240356 Seems like the sensible solution. Is this in any way, how can I put it, a culturally controversial move?If so, how are the locals (on both sides) taking it? 0 Quote

Suspect the only real issue on this is what happens when Linfield play there? If this works out OK, it will be interesting to see if there's any appetite for Derry City to play in NI football again. 0 Quote

I was thinking the same, although Derry City have entertained Linfield at The Brandywell without incident. Mind you I suppose those were friendlies, has there been a competitive match between the two since Derry's resurrection? Although it's Institute they'll be playing not Derry City, but I suppose you have idiots on both sides who could cause trouble outside of the ground. 0 Quote
LongTimeLurker Posted June 9, 2018 Posted June 9, 2018 Think there has been at least one Derry City vs Linfield game in the Setanta Cup and things did not go smoothly. 0 Quote
Co.Down Hibee Posted June 9, 2018 Posted June 9, 2018 Always felt it would give the Irish league a lift if Derry were to enter it, can't really see why they would, perhaps It would create more issues than it was worth but they'd be a major player,no question. 0 Quote
The clean living guy Posted July 6, 2018 Posted July 6, 2018 I see a side from West Belfast (swifts?) are changing names to Belfast Celtic. I had always thought Donegal Celtic had tried to take that mantle with little success. 1 Quote
LongTimeLurker Posted July 9, 2018 Posted July 9, 2018 Sport & Leisure Swifts by the looks of things. It's strange that Cliftonville can have a decent sized following from republican areas in North Belfast but teams from West Belfast don't seem to be able to gain any significant traction. 0 Quote
Jacksgranda Posted July 13, 2018 Author Posted July 13, 2018 (edited) https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44702741 Nearly feels like a defeat - great result for Coleraine, not so much Crues and Reds. Glenavon also had a great result, beating Molde 2-1, don't know how I missed that. Edited July 13, 2018 by Jacksgranda 0 Quote
Jacksgranda Posted July 20, 2018 Author Posted July 20, 2018 Hard luck Coleraine by all accounts. Acquitted themselves well https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44845298 As did Derry City, although they're out, too. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44845224 0 Quote

Ivo den Bieman Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 BBC Preview of this season's Irish League Newry City who've done a Sevco in the last few years are a bit of an unknown quantity but have signed well. Institute will offer better opposition than Carrick Rangers too and it will be interesting to see how they get on sharing the Brandywell with Derry City. Hard to see beyond Crusaders for the title. Not sure if Coleraine will manage to push them as hard this time, given last season's success. Can't see Barry Gray lasting the season at Cliftonville; David Healy will hope his re-shaped squad does much better than last season's poor showing or he'll be down the road by the autumn, too. possible dark horses in Ballymena and Genavon as always. The rest are much of a muchness. should be an interesting season in NI football. 0 Quote
