oneteaminglasgow
How, exactly, does writing off junkies benefit their victims?
Robin.Hood
The simple unpalatable truth is that some people don't deserve a place in society. They can and should be written off..Who are these some people?

Do you accept that such things don't absolve people of their responsibilities to other people and to society in general? Clearly not absolve, but it's important to establish if there is a root cause before deciding action. If that can be done you can decide the degree of punishment and course of rehabilitation. Ultimately some won't rehabilitate, those people might need to be held separately from others.

Inanimate Carbon Rod
You've been merrily telling us about people you know with scores of convictions. Not once have you mentioned their victims. Why is that? The simple unpalatable truth is that some people don't deserve a place in society. They can and should be written off..Merrily telling you? Ffs man its a fucking tragedy this is happening but its pretty clear your ‘lock the b*****ds up’ approach which is all we’ve ever had isn’t working.

But people over the age of criminal responsibility need to be held accountable for their actions. The onus should be on them to make the correct choices in their lives. -
The Moonster
Does "writing off" mean sending all junkies to prison for the rest of their days or simply just letting them die?

Untreated psychological illness doesn't usually get better with age. If it is sustained as a child, it is usually suppressed until it manifests in a shitstorm of self destruction and/or offending behaviour.
oneteaminglasgow
It’ll prevent them having further victims. So, in the same way as helping them out of a life of drug addiction would, only without the added potential benefits of that?

Inanimate Carbon Rod
I'd respectfully suggest your "let the b*****ds free to prey on society" approach isn't working. Any words on the victims yet?Mate I literally spend most of my day helping victims of crime. The best assistance we can give them is cutting the volume of crime. I dont want people free to prey on society, I want drug misuse to be seen as a public health emergency and stamped out. Have you any idea how much it costs to keep someone locked up? Or to treat chronic addiction and associated health impacts like HIV/HepC? If we stop the drug misuse we stop everything. Locking up people with an illness doesnt help anyone.
