Jambo'ness
Into 1978 now and the BU's completed a League double over Linlithgow Rose, this time by 4-2 at Newtown. The headlines said 'Eddie shoots down Rose!'. The Bu's came back from 2-1 down at half-time to blitz the Rose in the 2nd 45. Brian Eddie was the star with a hat-trick and Ian Miller grabbed the other. Almost complete team of Ferguson, McNulty, Stewart, McQueen, Breen, Miller, Dunleavie, Balanowski, Craw, Eddie
Jambo'ness
Two part teaser for today. Harking back to Championship season 13/14, we travelled to Newtongrange on this day and won 1-0. Who got the goal and what number jersey was Ross Campbell wearing that day? (inspired by his two numbers on Wednesday there).

Davie Connell brought him to Kilsyth, he did score a few goals but never repeated his hat-trick and my memory is that he missed an awfull lot of sitters!
Scuzz
Jambo, was it Grant Plenderleith? I think I recall him scoring midweek in a 1-0 win there but may have the season wrong!

Jambo'ness
Now for a first, a Bo'ness defeat. However it was the first final the club had reached in their first season, 45/46. The competition was the East of Scotland Cup, the venue Tynecastle and the opponents Fauldhouse United. That the BU's lost 2-0 can be put into perspective by the fact that the 'hoose were almost invincible that season, winning the League whilst being unbeaten and lifting 4 cups including the prized Junior Cup. A crowd of 14,609 saw the BU's go down fighting and had a Hamilton goal chalked off, dubiously, for off-side. The team was: P McKinnon, Archibald, Gibb, Gardner, Smart, Brash, McGowan, Pryde, Hamilton, Leask, McLean.

Some big crowds in those days, would be struggling to get a gate half that size in the Junior Cup Final today. Looking forward to the coming weeks Jambo when the latter rounds of the Cups were played. Will be interesting to hear of the crowds attending, especially from this era.
Jambo'ness
In 1984, Fauldhouse United lined up in a 6th round replay in the Junior Cup. This was an away tie but was played at Armadale. Predictably, this was a close match and the BU's eventually triumphed 2-1. Tommy Caldwell and Brian Fairley hit the goals as the BU's marched into the semi's. The team was: Kirkwood, Dunleavie, Breen, Carroll, Caldwell, Reid, Shields, Beaton, Sinnet, Fairley, Wilson

These sort of crowds were the norm in the immediate post war years. Five figure crowds even for fairly minor cup finals which were always played a senior grounds. Have a look at The Irvine Meadow website and you will see details of the Scottish cup run in which they played before 220,000 spectators, admittedly with multiple replays, but still a truly amazing total.
