Defending and Attacking Crosses

We haven't been doing this well in 2021 and considering our direct game plan you'd think we would score more and be quite secure defending these kind of attacks. Lost some rubbish goals to Austria, the Netherlands, Czech Republic and Croatia that came as a result of a high ball into our box. On the other hand for all the high balls we fire towards the opponents box, we only have a couple of goals to show for it against Austria and maybe you could count the Faroe Islands too.

I was thinking the same. Austria and Czech goals at Hampden were near identical. I think McTominay is pretty ineffective as a centre back, and we need a more naturally aware defensive pairing ( thought Gallagher performed well previously)
Also those goals were crosses right on the money, whereas Robertson and O’Donnell rarely put our forwards in scoring opportunities from their deliveries.

Definitely something to be worked on

One thing that stuck out about a lot of "chances" we had were that the guy on the end of the ball just seemed to be throwing himself at it, rather than any kind of controlled, composed finish.

That's cause we create half chances

As we go long or wide

We make no attempt to play football in midfield through the thirds like all other teams and create better goal scoring opportunities

Correct 100%

Then the people who can't see this are convinced we created real chances and played well due to our inflated stats.

To defend a set play like that is poor, we know it's poor, the players know it's poor and we'll try to make sure we improve on that. It's not something we've been culpable of recently so it’s something we can work on, address and be better at.

Don't agree with Steve Clarke's comments there and hopefully we'll get better at this aspect of our game next year.
