HibeeJibee
Hosted in USA. Starts on Saturday; although in a sense it actually started this weekend as qualifying (due to take place last year) has been truncated down to single SF and Final ties in Fort Lauderdale. There were to be 4 qualifiers decided from 4 pathways each containing 3 teams... but Qatar have now been added to the finals tournament meaning a cut down to 3 pathways of 4 teams each. These are Tuesday's qualifying finals:Haiti v Bermuda Guatemala v Guadeloupe Trinidad & Tobago v French Guiana Finals tournament contains 4 groups of 4; then QFs > SFs > Final. From this edition concluding group games play simaltaneously. Group A in Frisco and Dallas (holder Mexico's opening tie in Arlington); Group B in Kansas City (with 1 concluding tie in Frisco); Group C in Orlando (with 1 concluding tie in Houston); Group D in Houston (with 1 concluding tie in Orlando). QFs in Glendale and Arlington; SFs in Austin; Final in Paradise, Nevada on Sunday 1st August.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CONCACAF_Gold_CupGroup A Mexico El Salvador Curacao Trinidad & Tobago/French GuianaGroup B United States of America Canada Martinique Haiti/BermudaGroup C Costa Rica Jamaica Suriname Guatemala/GuadeloupeGroup D Honduras Panama Grenada Qatar UK television coverage on Premier Sports. RossBFaeDundee
Never won't be stupid that Qatar get a place in this, not to mention their Copa America appearance not long ago. As always, hopefully we see some upsets, particularly on the big 2 of Mexico and America. Canada are on the up, could have a decent crack at it, and teams like Costa Rice and Honduras will always have a shot. senorsoupe
I think we (Canada for those unaware) have a decent chance of a good tournament. Most of our top players (Including Alphonso Davies) are in the squad so I have no doubt we will get through the group, I even think we can win it given that the USA don't have most of their big names. That would set up a quarter final with likely either Costa Rica and Jamaica, two teams who I think we have a legit chance of beating. Crucially it looks as though we avoid Mexico until a final so I think that we may have an outside chance of making it! I know it's not natural to be confident about our MNT's chances, but this is the best Canadian MNT of my lifetime. Certainly better than "Holger's Heroes" that shocked everyone by winning the Gold Cup back in 2000
RossBFaeDundee
Woke up early after napping off and couldn't get back to sleep, ended up turning on the Guatemala vs Guadeloupe qualifier near the end, and they had a marathon of a shootout. Marvin Ceballos, Guatemala's initial penalty taker, ended up with not one but two howlers as he skied their initial penalty, and then dinked their 12th and final penalty wide. Certainly wasn't boring.
Theroadlesstravelled
The US team looks mediocre. 14 players with less than 10 caps. They will do absolutely nothing.

Theroadlesstravelled
Davies misses out for Canada. It’s Mexico’s competition to lose at this point.
Donathan
Trinidad & Tobago’s fall from grace since they qualified for the 2006 World Cup is quite mental. Gone from a respectable showing in Germany to having to sneak through a pre qualifier against French Guiana to even make the gold cup.

They barely seem to have any players based outside CONCACAF nowadays; except several kicking about India. This squad a sole example is from Norwegian 2nd-tier. Notable exception is Garcia of AEK Athens but he hasn't travelled.
GNU_Linux
Guatemala replacing Curaçao due to a covid outbreak in the Curaçao camp All national teams participating in this summer’s Concacaf Gold Cup are following strict health and safety protocols, including regular COVID-19 testing. Ahead of the start of the Gold Cup Group Stage, all competing national teams went through several rounds of testing and, unfortunately, the Curaçao delegation returned a significant number of positive results across their staff and players in the last round of testing. All of the individuals were immediately isolated, and Concacaf and the Curaçao Football Federation are ensuring that they are being offered the necessary support. Although several Curacao players returned a negative test result, local state guidelines require several of them to isolate due to being close contacts of those who tested positive. In light of these circumstances, Concacaf and the Curaçao Football Federation have mutually agreed that Curaçao will not participate in the Gold Cup. Concacaf and the Curacao Football Federation have made every effort to find a solution that would enable Curaçao to compete, however the health and safety of the Curaçao players and staff, and all participants in the tournament, must be prioritized. The next highest ranked team from the Gold Cup Preliminary Round (Prelims) is Guatemala. This is based on performance on the field (wins, draws and goal difference) in the Prelims matches played at DRV PNK Stadium in South Florida from July 2 to 6. On this basis and per the Gold Cup regulations, the Concacaf Council has unanimously approved an emergency proposal for Guatemala to replace Curaçao in Group A. Guatemala’s first Gold Cup Group Stage match against El Salvador will be played on Sunday, July 11 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. Further details will be confirmed as soon as possible.

Both they and Guatemala lost the concluding round on penalties. Guatemala beat Guyana by 4 goals in opening round. Cuba scratched to French Guiana so they were awarded 3-0. Basically they've missed-out by 1 goal having not had the opportunity to put more than 3 past Cuba because they withdrew.
RossBFaeDundee
Marvin Ceballos somehow redeemed despite missing two massive penalties, lucky guy.
Theroadlesstravelled
Qatar - Panama tomorrow should be vaguely interesting. Qatar are the currents Asian Cup champions and their entire squad comes from just 4 Qatari teams.
HibeeJibee
Qatar thrice lost a lead and ultimately held 3-3 by Panama. They may need a big score against Grenada in the next game to put themselves in a more comfortable position to progress. Despite us maligning them I see Trinidad & Tobago held Mexico to 0-0 on opening day. Otherwise all games went to form although surprising to see USA only manage 1-0 over Haiti.
Theroadlesstravelled
Qatar beat Grenada 4-0. 7 goals in 2 games. They definitely make the tournament interesting.
HibeeJibee
Every single match in the middle round of group games went with form. In consequence Guatemala, Haiti, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Suriname and Grenada are all eliminated with 1 game left... while El Salvador, Canada, USA, Costa Rica, Jamaica and Honduras are all through with 1 game left. So just the Mexico/Trinidad & Tobago and Qatar/Panama situations have progress riding on them on the last day; but the first-named will have to lose with 5 goals swings which isn't going to happen. There is nevertheless the question of finishing as group winners or runners-up and related routes in knockouts. senorsoupe
We were the better team for most of the game against the muricans but a lapse in concentration at the start cost us. Need to be better defensively
Theroadlesstravelled
Potential tie of the next round has to be Mexico v Qatar. 2 attacking teams with different styles. It would be an interesting contest.

With our three best players now out (Davies, David, and Larin) I don't fancy our chances against either Costa Rica or Jamaica.
