First game euro 2024 face Germany

line up

Shankland to start...rest the 'quality' players. We will lose this game quite comfortably whatever the case , let's not risk injuries for the two games in which we stand a bit of a chance.

We pushed Germany really close twice under Strachan and that was the World cup winning squad with likes of Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Muller, in their Pomp.

If anything our squad is better now, even with the injuries.

That would be a brave move. I understand the idea, it's basic logic and sound strategy to save your strongest resources for your highest probability opportunities and wouldn't have any issue with it if that's how it played out, but I think we all know it won't play out that way for more human reasons perhaps.

The turn around time between the Germany game and the Switzerland game is 5 days, so we have a day extra to prepare than Switzerland in any case.

They,  again,  struggled to break down an organised team last night.   They are clearly better than us and should win but I don't think they're any better than the Spain team who we played well against twice in qualifying.  It's a chance to put pressure on them and hopefully catch them cold.

Gunn

McCrorie Porteous Hendry Tierney Robertson

McGregor McGinn

McTominay  Christie

Adams

We can try all we like we won't beat Germany....we try with everything we have against Switzerland & Hungary.

I quite fancy our left hand side against their right hand side.

Spoiler

I do also quite fancy their left hand side against our right hand side.

Adams is likely everyone's preference.  A little kneejerk (just like the clamour for Shankland after Georgia), but Adams is more experienced at this level and does appear to be fit and in form.

Presumably, the only other decisions are right back (surely Ralston), whether Christie or Gilmour starts, and which centre halves start - 2 of the 3 from Hanley, Porteous, and Hendry.

I suspect we'll start on Friday as we intend to against Germany.  A fair number of changes in second half to protect players, and/or chase/protect a result.

I don't think its knee-jerk. Laurence stunk the place out again. He's been in and out the squads for 5 years now, and never shown that he has much to offer us. Time to cut the cord IMO. At what point do we admit that 20 goals against your Livingstons, your St Johnstone, your Hibs of this world isn't scope for being an international footballer?

If we were to actually send out a sacrificial B team in the tournament's opening game because we decided we're just too shite to conceivably get a result against a bigger side then I'd rather we just forfeit the whole thing to be honest. Don't see the point of aiming for the knockout stages of a major tournament if you're starting off with such a fundamental lack of self-belief.

We lose to Germany... thinking otherwise is , as you might phrase it, a fundamental lack of self-awareness. Therefore, what's the best method for making the knockout stage ? A. Going full pelt against Germany, getting beat 2 or 3 - 0 and losing MacTomimay, McGinn, Tierney for the next two games ? B. Playing sensibly, within our self, marshalling our slender resources to target two games we could possibly win ?

He hardly stunk the place up,  it was a poor game and he was part of that.  He got involved in a decent number of our best moves but barely got a sight of goal, he wasn't breaking the play up or not contributing.

He's got 10 goals against the OF and 6 in European football over 10 starts.  Suggesting international football is some sort of massive leap for him is daft, given he's scored in it this season against a team at the Euros.

He's got limitations and he's clearly not a top level player but he's more than capable of contributing against most of the teams Scotland play

We're obviously not resting anyone for the Germany game.  It's a pointless discussion.

'Only' losing 1-0 could be critical when goal difference will likely separate 4th best 3rd place, and 5th best.

Portugal won Euro 2016 after three draws in the group stages - getting through as a best placed 3rd placed team.

We'll setup with the best side we have to try and achieve our goal - which will be to be defensively sound, compact, retain and cycle the ball when we can, and counter attack where possible.
