Merc have withdrawn there right to appeal so it's done and dusted Max is the champ

The announcement last night of a commission to look at what happened kind of indicated that this would be the case, I wonder what else the FIA have promised Mercs to get them to withdraw the appeal.

You can argue that the race director’s discretion has been stretched to the limit, but between the two options of “Finish under the safety car” and “Finish by racing”, he absolutely made the right decision.

I've watched enough Indy Cars/Endurance racing to know finishing under yellow sucks and that we would all prefer to finish under green.

If Masi had just restarted the lap with the lapped car in between Max & Lewis then we would have still got the finish under green, I also believe we would have seen a pass for the championship on the last corner.  However what we got was a scenario where the rules were applied in a manner never seen before (trying to recall when they only let a few lapped cars unlap themselves and nothing comes to mind)

Why was it ok for the lapped cars to be cleared from between Max and Lewis, but not Sainz and Max.  Sainz then never had a shot at 2nd place and instead had to contend with trying to get past Stroll and Danny Ric all the while trying to defend from a hard charging Tsunoda (who had a pretty good race tbf).

it all smacked of creating an ending which was best for entertainment value, rather than applying the rules and regs correctly.

Red Bull say Any does not mean All.

That's Red Bull's argument, but we've not had any word from the FIA/Race Stewards on it.

    Merc are appealing

Don't they need new evidence for that?

Probably a smokescreen to buy time for the QC boy to go through the official stewards document against the rules/sporting regs

I would imagine they'll be appealing the interpretation of the rules here and whether proper procedures were followed.....you know, stuff that lawyers love.

What sort of explanation would you like? If Masi says he made a mistake by putting the "no unlapping" message out originally, is he not allowed to rectify that? (perhaps the marshals got the track cleaned quicker than expected as well)

Especially as the Race Director's evidence points out, the purpose of the rule is to remove lapped cars which interfere in the race, and there is a desire not to finish under yellow. Allowing five cars to go past removes the main interference and allows the race to go green.

Frankly, yes.  I think it could be accepted that a mistake was made or the situation improved better than they had first hoped, but the impression you get is that the race director fliped/flopped on this based on the previous 3 or 4 races of complete incompetance.

Also the only cars that were allowed to unlap themselves were the cars between Lewis and Max, however the lapped cars between Max and Sainz were left there (Danny Ric and Stroll).  It can be argued that if you are to remove the main interference, shouldn't it be the same for all?

Was just about to stick the full ruling up but the best bit is that "both teams had agreed that it should be decided on track" Mercs words come back to bite them is delicious 🤣

Yeah, it does kind of.....although I don't think it's automatically prevents Merc taking this any further.

  5. No proper explanation from that announcement as to why the decision not to enact pass around was reversed, nor as to why only some of lapped cars got pass around.  Not sure if Mercs will leave it at that tbh, 50/50 on whether we'll see a further appeal in Paris.

Is there any grounds for appeal on this? It’s funny as f**k but do Mercedes have a right for appeal and could potentially cause this to be overturned?

I highly doubt it, but I think for the benefit of the sport Mercs need to take this to the court of arbitration to find out what decisions were made, whether they fit with the current regs and what procedures were (or not) followed.  And it needs to look at the last 4 or 5 races, not just what happened here.

And at the end of it.....Masi needs to be out of the role as Race Director.

I'm sure if Merc think the unlapping was unfair, then they will just hand back the points Hamilton got when he did it earlier in the season

When it happened earlier, it was within the rules as stated.  What happened here appears to be completely against the regs...

  8. So many questions on race direction here.

First of all, the stewards decision to note penalise Lewis on lap 1 was bizarre and totally flying in the face of what happened last week.

Secondly, the contrived way this race was finished looks like it broke so many racing regs (lapped cars have to catch up the safety car train after passing, all cars have to be allowed to unlap the safety car....not just the cars between first and second)

If Max gets this because Merc made a schoolboy error not stopping it would be pretty delightful.

No idea why the didn't stop there. As soon as Max stopped surely Hamilton had to as well?

Mercs wanted to keep track position, if Lewis stopped then Red Bull would have stayed out.  Track position as been a priority historically here.

It was referred to the stewards it was the stewards (Derek Warwick) decision

I've put the race onto mute so didn't hear the commentary, the fact it was referred makes it a lot worse imo.

Hamilton should be giving that place back.  Ridiculous decision by the stewards.

It's not the stewards.  Race direction refer incidents to the stewards for investigation.....Masi (Race Director) has chosen not too.
