  1. If you're pissed and have the keys to a campervan (on the street say, would you be done for drink driving if caught trying to avoid a hotel fare for the night?

Just wondering as I take it you would be done (if caught) trying to get into the back seat of a car for a nights kip even if you had no intention on driving.

  2. People don't 'deserve' a tip for driving a mile or so to deliver a pizza. That's their job.

I can just about understand tipping a waiter/waitress who has given good service and has added to the enjoyment of the evening, or a hairdresser/barber who has done a really good job (because you've got to walk about with that haircut for weeks on end).

A delievery driver knocks on your door, hands you you order and collects the money. This interaction lasts a minute tops. They do not deserve a tip.

I´ve been around South America for the last month and everywhere here automatically sticks a 10% tip onto your bill and you can´t seem to avoid it, even if the service is crap at times. Most of the time it´s been excellent though, far better than the standard in the UK. If I was in, say, Pizza Hut, and some bored schoolgirl doing her Friday shift did it in her usual moaney and bored fashion before sticking on 10% automatically, I´d be raging. Saying that, I normally wouldn´t tip if they were crap and it probably just turns into a catch 22 for them - "I´m miserable because people give me crap tips for being miserable. I don´t want to work here, Mum makes me and then takes a share for keeps, urgh, life´s so unfair. What do you want? We´ve run out of Pepperoni."

You can tell I´m not a massive fan of Pizza Hut restaurants even though I like the delivery. If it´s a really shite freezing, wet and windy night though, I might be tempted to tip the delivery guy. Normally I don´t, but I often feel a bit bad about it afterwards until I dig into my pizza and then forget all about the nice guy that gave me it while he rushes about town for tuppence, scared of missing deadlines and getting into shit off his manager.

  3. No, the article goes on to say that you're only allowed 200 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos or 250g of tabacco.

    Aye, t'was saying:

Please note the following exceptions stand for these EU countries:

From Estonia - 200 cigarettes or 250g of smoking tobacco*

From Bulgaria, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia - 200 cigarettes*

  4. What's the limit for bringing cigarettes back from poland?

    200 cigarettes according to this:

    http://www.heathrow-...k/dutyfree.html

Edit - I rather liked this bit:

If you bring back large quantities of alcohol or tobacco, a Customs Officer is more likely to ask about the purposes for which you hold the goods. This will most likely be the case if you appear at the airport with more than:

    • 3200 cigarettes
    • 400 cigarillos
    • 200 cigars
    • 3 kg of smoking tobacco
    • 110 litres of beer
    • 10 litres of spirits
    • 90 litres of wine
    • 20 litres of fortified wine e.g. port or sherry

    Slightly suspicious!

  5. Does anyone know the best way to make the journey from Glasgow to Dunfermline and back? At first glance it's saying the bus costs £13 one way and takes two and a half hours, got to be better options than that.

Also does anyone know if you can get travel expenses if you regularly make journey's for work placement for uni, say Glasgow to Dunfermline?

I got the Stagecoach from Buchanan St to Dunfermline the other weekend and it only cost me about £8 for the single - full adult fare too.

Other than the short detour into Cumbernauld, it was pretty direct and just over an hour altogether. Not sure where you're getting two and a half from?!

  6. Ayrshire is a county. It's divvied up for council admin reasons because it is massive. The county itself still has a Lord Lieutenant as do all the other old counties of Scotland.

Fair enough, my main quarrel was with them having South Ayrshire as a county when it's nothing but a council area, even if it was formerly Kyle and Carrick.

Back on topic, I took a few friends up Ben Chonzie last weekend for their first munroe of the year. With just the right amount of snow it was actually quite interesting with the round route full of mountain hares as usual. Good weather apart from the horizontal hailstones on the summit.

  7. Pub argument during the quiz yesterday.

"What is the highest point in Ayrshire?"

A few different answers, rattles oot prams.

Depends if you count Arran as part of Ayrshire doesn't it seeing as it's covered by North Ayrshire council? Had I had that question then I reckon I would have gone for Goat Fell. ;)

My real pet hate are questions like these in pub quizzes. We had one not too long ago about 'in which Scottish county would you find Prestwick Airport?'. Define county in Scotland futha mucka. When you look at the English county system then the closest thing we have are regions (Strathclyde, Grampian etc) but other folk (particularly English quiz masters up here) seem to think that council areas are counties.

For example, there's no way you could look at, say East Renfrewshire or 'City of Aberdeen' in the same definition as Cornwall or Cumbria.

P.S. their answer for the Prestwick one was 'South Ayrshire' but under a county equivalent I reckon it should have been Strathclyde

(Cue the usual 'Strathclyde' doesn't exist bullshit even though you still have Strathclyde Police, Strathclyde Fire & Rescue etc...)

  8. I've recently decided to start caring about uni after barely attending, and not studying, in the first semester and in result failing one exam, not going to a second and just passing the third by 5%.

Things are looking better, I read up at least 2 times a week and I've had all my essays at least started 3 weeks in advance. I've only had one graded unit so far this semester and it was a presentation but I got 84% for it.

Just wait until Law Stud sees this.

  9. Works bowling night out last night with various prizes given out at the end of the night including wooden spoons for the losing team and it had me thinking, if Scotland win the 6 Nations Wooden Spoon (again, groan), do they actually get presented with a wooden spoon?

  10. Yes - I've had a couple of cracking meals there,

    and never had problems.

Fair do's. Thinking about it a bit more, I think it was a fair while back and we got stopped when we were passing by (out for dinner) and they pretty much said 'it's no longer Kuri, we've taken it over and it's now better and cheaper! Come and try!'. Turns out we bought what we normally would have in Kuri and ended up spending far more than we would have really. I think that's where my problem lies. :(

  11. While we're on the Indian theme, my girlfriend and I are spending this weekend in Aberdeen as she has a training course. Can anyone recommend a good Indian restaurant near the city centre?

The Nazma Tandoori on Bridge St (close to the train station) always seems to get good reviews. I was there once and it was all pictures of Alex Salmond shaking hands with the chef on the wall and the likes but wasn't anything particularly special IMO. I was just as impressed with the Bollywood on Union Street - thought the name sounded pretty cheap but it was good and excellent value. 'Cinnamon' at the south end of Union Street is meant to be pretty good too, although I've never been in.
