  1. Best memory: Scoring a goal after a 50 yard run through their defence, only to throw-up immediately afterwards behind the goal. Balotelli doesna celebrate like that eh?

Just listened to the Camanachd draw live on Radio Scotland.

    Kyles v Newtonmore/Lochaber

    Kinlochshiel v Inveraray

The south final is on then, but could quite easily be an all north effort. Should be good semi-finals regardless.

  2. Went to Kilmallie v Inveraray today, on way down from trip to Knoydart. Have been impressed with Inveraray so far this season, feeling as though their league standing doesn't do them justice. They took a two goal lead today, after a fairly pedestrian first half, and I was considering making an early start for home at half-time as I expected them to steam through Kilmallie in the second half.

I think for a few years now Inveraray have very much focused on the cups rather than the league. They haven't got a big squad and a number of them don't live locally so they struggle for collective training and for getting their best team out every week. I don't think it's a co-incidence that often the strongest teams in shinty have most of their players based in their area. It's not realistic for Inveraray to win the league and I think they are happy enough just to maintain their premier league place. For the cups they only need to win 4 matches to get a trophy so they aim for that and they have done well in the cups down the years, albeit I think this team should have won at least one more Camanachd Cup. Let their standards drop a bit in the MacAulay last week though! I would like to see an all south final this year between Inveraray and Kyles as it's been so long since it was two south teams, but time will tell. Perhaps the draw tomorrow will kill off that idea anyway.

Regarding financing of teams I think a fair bit does come from friendly local sponsors. Players themselves have to chip in as well. At least it means that one team dropping out wouldn't cause armageddon in the shinty world :D .

Kyles - Newtonmore is going to be a cracker this weekend. Big game at the bottom too and Kilmallie will really need to beat Inveraray to maintain any genuine hope of staying up.

  3. Kerry and Tyrone is a massive game ,hard to believe one of them will be going out of the Championship before the provincial finals are even played

Belter of a draw for a qualifier but not good for Tyrone. Kerry will get a lift from their great escape at the weekend and the chance to finally put one over on Tyrone, and in front of their own support, will bring them on further. Might even be the spur Kerry need to get going and have another good crack at Sam. For all that the younger Tyrone players are doing well and gaining experience I think this is a bridge too far. Kerry to win with a bit to spare - although I would f*cking love to see Spillane's face if Tyrone won in Killarney :D .

  4. I watched Donegal knock Tyrone out of Ulster yesterday. A very tight game and Tyrone came to regret a number of missed chances in the first half, they should have come more than just a point ahead. Donegal strangled them in the second half and hit a few fine scores to pull clear. Tyrone almost pulled it out of the fire at the end with a great save denying Martin Penrose a goal in injury time. You have to wonder what would have happened had Cavanagh and Coney been fit to play. Positives for Tyrone anyway with some younger players doing very well, Conor Clarke in particular.

Donegal are clearly a nightmare to play against and will be awkward opponents for even the best teams. I don't think there is an All-Ireland in them however.

  5. Big victory for Newtonmore in Fort William in the league. My feeling only Kyles can stop them.

Kyles game postponed yesterday, they`ll be hoping this is not a sign of things to come, as it blighted the second half of the season for them in 2011.

Excellent win for Kyles yesterday at Lovat. I was reading their manager the other day saying they aren't playing anywhere near as well as last season but have found themselves in contention in the league so they are going to have a real crack at it.

Inveraray won the Celtic Society Cup but with an even bigger margin than I expected, 14-0 against Taynuilt. They will be aiming to win at least one more cup before the season is out.

  6. From the terrific Britain From Above website that was all over the news today, I found this picture from 1928 of Glen Albyn Distillery, the Caledonian Canal and Caley park, surrounded by fields:

    SPW022141.jpg

Cracking picture, RayBees. Dramatic changes since then! There is a similar picture on Britain from Above of Recreation Park in Alloa in 1928, also surrounded by fields. A great resource.

I found this one from 1930 as well < http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/sites/all/lib/aerofilms-images/public/scotland/SPW033830.jpg > Anybody know where the Citadel ground would have been in relation to this?

  7. Look, what exactly do you expect Rangers fans to do??

"OHHH, you know what? See that club I've supported all my life of which 99% of it's employees are innocent of wrong doing? I'm going to stop supporting them 'cause David Murray and Craig White are a couple of crooks"

Rangers' accounts and dealings were scrutinised VERY heavily in the last few months, and a lot of the players and such are clearly guilty of accepting payments in methods that are unlawful, do you think that we are the only club to have done that? Football is currupt as f**k and not a team in the world has played by the rules at all times. I'm not saying it's right, and from what it looks like Rangers were involved in quite a lot of dodgy dealings but it's the actions of individuals within the club. You can't exactly just 'turn off' your liking towards your favourite football team.

Am I ashamed of the things Rangers did in the last 20 years or so? Of course. Am I going to stop supporting them or apologise for the actions of individuals within the club? Will I f**k.

So what do you expect decent Rangers fans to do in this situation???

Indeed. Rangers fans support a club which reached the top of Scottish football (and maintained it's place there) through exploiting religious bigotry. Anybody who goes to Ibrox is surrounded by thousands of people singing sectarian songs. That poison is at the very heart of the club. If fans are content to accept all of that and still support the club then they are hardly to abandon it on account of dodgy financial dealings.

  8. Will be watching on TV later Waspie. Hope for a Lochaber victory.

Meant to ask if you heard of the carry on at the Kinlochshiel v Kingussie Camanachd cup game two weeks back? Kings turned up without their kit & wanted the game called off, the ref told them if they didn't play in Shiels away kit they'd forfeit the tie!

I heard an interview with the Shiel manager and he said had the tables been turned Kings would probably have refused to let them have alternative strips and they'd get booted. He wasn't mincing his words & said in no uncertain terms the two Badenoch clubs are treated favourably.

That interview was on Cuillin FM after the Skye v Glenurquhart game. Skye looked great first half & did well to hold on against their Premier opponents. That's two games I've made this year!

I did hear about it Desert Nomad, it featured in the youtube highlights of the game. Hadn't heard that Kinlochshiel felt hard done by over it though. I'm not convinced they had much alternative but to lend Kingussie the second team strips, it would have looked bad had Shiel deliberately not sorted out Kingssue with the tops to ensure they progressed to the next round. They were a little unlucky not to win the match on the field of play going by the highlights.

I just spotted the Black Isle Brewery beer tent. I wish I went now! :(

With the rain and the early goals making the whole event a bit of a damp squib the beer tent ended up being my vantage point for a fair portion of the match :D .

I was behind the goal for a bit, hope i've not disgraced myself! Shame newtonmore scored two early goals, killed the game. Wet and cold journey home now!

Agree with that, Le Tout. Lochaber looked a little overawed in the opening stages and going down 2-0 within 15 mins was a bit of a disaster for them. They certainly had chances at 2-0 and at 3-1 but unfortunately they didn't take them and were never really back in the game. Have to feel that they will look back on this as a missed opportunity, they didn't give a proper account of themselves. Unfortunate after doing so well to reach this stage and with a big support behind them. All that said, I think 5-1 was quite a harsh scoreline.

Probably a very good chance of an ever bigger winning margin in the south final next week. Hope there is a better day for that one.

  9. Anybody heading to the MacTavish Cup Final at the Bught tomorrow? Should be a good match, I think. Lochaber are obviously going really well in North 1 and earned their place in the final with a win over Kingussie (a week after running them close in the MacAulay). Newtonmore - although they will still be clear favourites as reigning Camanachd Cup winners and league champions - are not going so well without Danny MacRae and were humped 3-0 by Lovat last week. I see they have named MacRae in their squad for tomorrow but I don't think he is anywhere near fit to play.

Should be a good day and with Lochaber not being used to these occasions there should be a excellent support up from Spean Bridge. Live on BBC Alba (1605 throw up, I think) for those who cannot make it to the Bught.

  10. Some big games this weekend with Sligo probably the biggest story with their 2-14 to 0-15 win over Galway. Great win for them and hopefully they go on and win Connaught, I felt sorry for them a couple of years back when they beat Mayo and Galway then lost to Roscommon the final.

Big win for Cork also over Kerry and hard to see them having many problems against Clare in the Munster final. The RTE pundits all wrote off Kerry after the game today but if they can get a head of steam up in the qualifiers then I could still see them being very dangerous later in the summer.

I was relieved in the end to see Tyrone get past Armagh by 0-19 to 1-13. A good game it must be said after all the abuse the Ulster Championship has taken. First half was encouraging for Tyrone but they got bogged down in the second period and when Armagh pulled level with 5 mins to go I was sh*tting myself. Fair play though, Petey Harte and Stevie O'Neill came up with 3 big scores when it mattered. A lot of work to be done but a good win for Tyrone.

Other one that caught my eye was Carlow coming back to draw with Meath. Wonder will they come to regret that they didn't go on and win that one.

  11. Heard from a couple of Lochaber fans that there was a bit of trouble in their Balliemore Cup game down in Oban, with players of the home team attacking the referee!!! Wonder if the Oban Times will report it!

They did! Suggestion that a Camanachd player tried to headbutt the ref and was held back by teammates. CA quoted as saying they are investigating.

  12. Hoganstand is reporting that McGuigan is back in training

Yup, posted on the Official Tyrone GAA Facebook this evening. Good option to have on the panel and even though he hasn't played inter county this year I would imagine his fitness will be at a decent level due to his involvement with Ardboe. One of my favourite Tyrone players and before the horrific leg and eye injuries I would have rated him as the finest playmaker of his generation. Even in 2008 when he was coming back from the injuries he came off the bench in the AI Final and everything went through him in the final 15 minutes, a period in which Tyrone outscored Kerry by 0-5 to 0-0 :D.

  13. I'm on my phone Waspie so I can't post the link but you should pay a visit to the Hoganstand,I was reading a piece on it yesterday in which Mickey Harte seems to be saying he's going to try and get Dooher,Jordan and McGuigan to come back to help out because of the Red Hands injury crisis

Sean Cavanagh is a massive loss and its a shame for the man, comes across as one of the more likeable and down to earth players. Not many in his position would have turned down those AFL contracts to stay with Tyrone

I read a similar piece in the Indo, Caoimhin. He didn't quite say he was going to try and get anybody back, just that if it came down to Tyrone needing to bring extra players onto the panel then some of the recently retired players might be a potential option.

Personally I wouldn't go down that route. Dooher has given his all and his time is up. Jordan and McGinley are still easily good enough (and Hughes also could do a job still) but they all called time on their inter county careers and Tyrone are not short at half back or midfield anyway. The one I would consider is Brian McGuigan, he said last year he would have continued had he been allowed to come back to the panel in March/April but that Mickey wanted everybody signed up and committed in January. McGuigan last year was at his best since 2005 and he could come in and help out in the forwards.

However, even without Cavanagh, Coney, Ronan O'Neill and Tommy McGuigan you can still put out a forward division like the one below. If these guys get injured then throw in a few more of the kids, McKenna, Mathew Donnelly, McNiece etc. That's the way to go.

    10.Ronan McNabb

    11.Mark Donnelly

    12.Joe McMahon

    13.Martin Penrose

    14.Stephen O'Neill

    15.Owen Mulligan

I have sympathy for Mickey though, he had turned the panel around and had it all looking pretty good at the start of April but injuries are threatening to ruin the season. Bit like 2006. The fact that his daughter's murder trial has just started can only be a serious distraction as well. A really tough time for a really good man.

  14. I shall now be supporting whoever Kery are playing.

A wise policy, they are an arrogant shower who think they own the game and they are the worst moaners going when they lose.

Sean Cavanagh out for the summer with a shoulder injury. That pretty much finishes off any hopes Tyrone had of making progress into the late summer.

  15. Really enjoyed Saturday`s 2-2 draw between Kingussie & Newtonmore, very good entertainment for £5 & of course glorious weather & a few ciders on the sideline!

Kingussie were unfortunate to have a man sent off, sent off for raising his hands, although the Newtonmore player was at it as well. Kings did well to hold on to a 2-1 lead until ten mins to go Newtonmore got the equaliser. Kings could have won it at the death though, `More keeper making a fantastic save with the last shot of the game.

Heard from a couple of Lochaber fans that there was a bit of trouble in their Balliemore Cup game down in Oban, with players of the home team attacking the referee!!! Wonder if the Oban Times will report it!

I watched bits of the game on TV. Perhaps it was the heat getting to the players but I thought it was pretty flat for a Badenoch derby. Newtonmore don't have anywhere near the same threat without Danny MacRae (and to be fair Chris Sellar was out too at the weekend) and I thought they were lucky to get a draw. Agree about the red card, I didn't think it should have been a sending off at all but if the ref was putting one man off then he should have given the Newtonmore man a red card as well.

Keeps things interesting in the league anyway. I didn't think Kyles were going to challenge for the league this year as they are missing a few lads but they are actually placed quite nicely at this point. The fact they are out of the Celtic Society and MacAulay means they can go all out for the League and the Camanachd too. I think the Camanachd could be a cracker this year - there are a number of teams capable of winning it. Inveraray are going to be dangerous opponents in the Camanachd and that was some score for them at the weekend, 7-1 against Kinlochshiel.

  16. I'm not worried about the SPL having a 2 down policy at all. I've said before that I think there should be a play-off.

I'm blaming the SFL fans for throwing stones when they live in a glass house. If they want to criticise the SPL's relegation places, they should also do what you have done and acknowledge the issue in their own league.

I accept your point but there is a difference in that there is already a recognised league setup (the SFL itself) for relegated SPL clubs to drop into. The major obstacle in the path of a pyramid system is the lack of such a recognised non league setup for relegated clubs. If the Juniors/Highland League/EOS and SOS were to come together and form a national non league setup - and it could be done without much significant change to the regional setups which already exist - then I have no doubt that a pyramid would very quickly follow.

This is another reason to send Newco Rangers to the Juniors. I'm sure that the presence of a zombie Rangers side playing non league football and waiting to get back to senior football would focus the minds of the authorities who have until now shown very little initiative in getting a pyramid system in place. We would have a pyramid in no time at all. It would also be the morally correct decision as the objections to Rangers starting again in the SPL apply equally to them starting in SFL 3. Going to the juniors, where they would not be jumping the queue, would be different. And yes, I know fine that it's not going to work out like that.

  17. Fair enough.

Although I know hee haw about GAA and hurling I agree that the finals seem to be great events, not only does half the people in the counties involved seem to leave for Dublin but I've seen some great/close games.

I don't know if they're shite or I'm a jinx, but whenever I'm in Kildare over the summer the fuckers never seemed to be involved. My mum's told me her county Meath are quite good at one of them (can't mind which), I reckon she's full of shit.

Couldn't even tell you my dad's county, I get the impression those in Norn Iron don't give much of a f**k about all of this stuff.

Edit: Who knew, my dad is a Downy.

You're off the mark there Erin Go Bragh, GAA participation in Ulster is very strong and the counties carry big supports when they are going well. Ulster is as passionate a GAA province as any in Ireland. Certainly the Nationalist community are dominant in GAA in the North and it's more polarised there than in the 26 counties in that respect, but I'm glad to say there is more and more Protestant involvement.

  18. See if the Old Firm just shrivelled up and fucking died, it would always be like this.

It's a nice thought isn't it. A proper Scottish football occasion and even if it's not a great game it will still be one to remember.

I come from a family of Hibs supporters and on those grounds I'll be in the green corner tomorrow. Mon the Hibees :D

  19. Time magazine brands Rangers fans "vile and violent"

"Although Rangers' administrators say that three other bidders have come forward, it's quite possible the team could be liquidated. And it's more than possible that this is a great thing for the game. Rangers and Glasgow Celtic have dominated the Scottish Professional League forever- they were both European powers once- but their bitter, sectarian-based rivalry has helped to undermine them. Their vile and violent fans-Protestants in the case of Rangers; Catholics for Celtic-are everything that's wrong with football. If Rangers were to fold, some of the religious hatred could be drained and perhaps new rivalries might develop in the SPL."

I enjoyed this reponse to the piece on the Time Magazine site - a Rangers fan taking Saporito to task for inaccuracies in the article.

A few clarifications as your article is misguided, untruthful, ill-researched and inflammatory in places:

    1) The club is called The Rangers Football Club, not Glasgow Rangers Football Club.

  20. Hurling is a faster more skilful version of the Scottish breakaway sport you mean.......

We play the Aussies in a hybrid code every year as we do with the Scots, you'll find videos for both on youtube. The game against the Scots doesn't get nearly as much exposure as the Aussie game though, which should be reversed in my opinion

The Gaelic Athletic Association govern the games, including handball and rounders

Only someone with a connection to Donegal could love the current team, the emphasis on getting men behind the ball is a killer to watch

    Behave yourself ;) .

Agree about Donegal, painful to watch last summer.

  21. Alright Waspie, yeah,Kerry should have closed that out but it made for a cracking finish to the final

I can't post links but you might want to read an article in Brollys Bites about Tyrone,it won't make comfortable reading for fans of The Red Hands

I read that piece caoimhin. Ultimately a lot of people were getting over excited at Tyrone winning 5 from 5 in the McKenna Cup then cruising through the league with 7 wins from 7. I read pundits in the build up to the Kildare match saying Harte had re-invented Tyrone and that Sam was a possibility. Tyrone then lose 1 match (and there wasn't much in it, Tyrone were ahead before Kildare's late scoring burst) and suddenly they are being widely written off. A lot of hype - both in terms of talking Tyrone up before the Kildare match and talking them down afterwards.

In reality I think Harte has done really well this year. The team has coped well with all the retirals and the new younger players have done well. It was very unfortunate that Kyle Coney was ruled out (for the season) with an injury before the Kildare game having been Tyrone's main scoring threat in the league. Similarly Ronan O'Neill was showing well before his injury. Those boys have it in them to be top forwards in the next decade. Peter Harte is going to be a great playmaker. I think Brolly's point is a little simplistic and that Harte will have learned plenty from the league final, more perhaps than he learned from the 12 consecutive wins that preceded it. Tyrone are unlikely to win Sam but they are still good enough to be dangerous opponents this summer.

Think back to Brolly before the 2008 1/4 when he tipped Dublin to beat Tyrone. By half time with Tyrone 5 points up he was waxing lyrical about the great qualities of this great Tyrone team that he had never written off

  22. Cosgrove I salute you. This needs to be heard by more people. Share the love everyone.

It's a good listen. Cringeworthy to hear Spiers trying to shout down Cosgrove for not having the Irish League stats to hand to back up his point when it was Spiers himself who initially made the comparison. Good work from Cosgrove.

Also interesting to hear Charlie Richmond saying refs want to officiate "the Rangers". When Cosgrove followed that up by saying would he accept Rangers returning to the top by "ripping up the rule book" Richmond said that was "playing with words". Wonder how he would have reacted to a player telling him he wasn't accepting a red card as Richmond's defintion of the rule was playing with words.

  23. Is there already a thread for the irish football/hurling championships? Hope i havent trodden on anyones toes here..

decent coverage on sky channel 433.. essentialy setanta sports.

business end of the season approaching..

my team ,Kerry were desperately unlucky in a last gasp defeat to Dublin last year.. hoping they go one better this year. have a wee soft spot for Donegal as well

    anyone else on p&b a fan ?

no greater sight in sport than a packed Croke Park on all ireland finals day IMO

    There is already a thread.

Can't agree that Kerry were desperately unlucky to lose to the Dubs last year. Kerry had a commanding lead going into the closing stages of the match and couldn't see it out. Dublin were deserving winners.
