It is astonishing that an uncontested energy policy was seemingly fine until a load of borrowing was going to be made to pay for tax cuts, yet it is no longer fine once the majority of those tax cuts have been reversed and a whole load of cuts, even in addition to the energy package being scaled back, are now required.

Higher cost of borrowing (well done Kwasi!) excepted, what else changed?

Confidence.  Effectively, the UK now has less financial leeway than before the mini-budget as the markets have no confidence in those in charge.  Reversing the policies to the status quo is not enough.

A general election would be the best way to resolve this or, at the very least, the installation of a market friendly PM such as Sunak.  Rejoining the single market would also be a great help.

  2. There's no way Truss can survive this. Hunt has just filed her entire economic policy in the bin (where it belonged) and she will be left defending measures the same as she was attacking Labour about last week.

I also can't see how the damage to the Tory party in general can be anything other than irreparable.  Hunt's new approach seems to be a return to some form of Osbournomics and austerity-lite, warning of real term cuts to public spending. Even if some of the public forget about the shambles of the last month, they aren't going to enjoy the next 12-18 months.

  3. I am always against giving assistants the role after a manager has been sacked.  It never works as they were part of the failed regime.  I suppose the difference with Fox is that he wasn't Ross's assistant in that he was here last season under Courts when, relatively speaking, results and performances were much better.

Would still prefer the box office appointment of big Dunc or someone else such as Robson or Daly coming in but I expect Fox would be staying on as assistant in those circumstances.

Ferguson gives me the impression that he's something of a manchild.

This is off the mark. Ferguson is a lot more intelligent than given credit for. As people have said, it's his lack of experience that is the big red flag.

I hadn't realised he has already left Everton looking for a management post so it maybe isn't as outlandish as I first thought.  Ferguson also looked after his money very well so perhaps salary may not be his main concern.

  5. Big Dunc would be the box office appointment just to see him screaming at players on the touchline.  You would also imagine it would take a bold sort to attempt to undermine him.

However, there's absolutely nothing to suggest he would be successful and he has little to no affinity to United (or indeed Scottish football in general).  There's no chance of him coming back up north.

  6. Entirely predictable when you saw that midfield.

Smith has been poor all season yet gets shunted into the middle.  Harkes doesn't offer anything defensively whilst Levitt is about 4 stone soaking wet.  Meanwhile, the only midfielder who has put in a tackle in the defensive half all season has sat on the bench.

Coupled with individual errors and Celtics ruthlessness we could quite easily concede 7 again. At least its not the keeper chucking them in yet.
