None of them. it's even harsh to suggest he should save that last one, if he saves that shot people would be saying how great a save it was, but because he only got something on it people think he should of kept it out 🤦‍♂️

I wonder if the suggestion is that his parry back out in front of him, led to the penalty and sending off.

I'd see that as a bit harsh though.

There were no goalkeeping howlers tonight, but he might have saved to 1st and 5th goals.

It can be argued that with competent goalkeeping we only lose that 2-0

    Can it?

Which of the 3 middle German goals (a phrase I'd rather not need to use) was the goalkeeper at fault for?

I was miles off. I've said already, really didn't expect the gulf to be so great.

Easy to be smart after the event.

I thought it was a daft remark when I read it this morning.

We should have been capable of doing a lot better than we did.  It's silly to see our side as on a par with theirs though.

I was fairly pessimistic about tonight even though I was looking forward to it.

It turns out, however, that I wasn't nearly pessimistic enough.  An absolutely pitiful display.

I'd rather watch it in the house, but an unfortunate side effect of qualifying, is non-football supporters getting involved. So we're going to the pub with other couples. My wife likes the anthems and the "atmosphere". Some of the others have less interest than that. I can hear it all now and wish I was man enough to refuse to go.

Had such an offer, but turned it down in order to fall out with my son at home instead.

No I'm not saying that. But I think the population difference between smaller countries like us, the Nordic states (say), and the likes of Hungary or Switzerland or Czechia is probably not a huge factor on the pitch - participation and good talent systems are. And countries like Uruguay, Croatia, Denmark, etc. are pretty successful with under 10m people. I just thought the 60% bigger population and world leading diversity were weird factors to mention, tbh.

Ok.  Probably a bit daft to say this then:  " if population size had any effect on how good a national football team is then Croatia and Uruguay would be sh1te and Russia, China and India would be brilliant. "

It sure as Hell implied that population isn't any kind of factor at all.  The reality is that it's a significant one.

Obvious point made many times before but if population size had any effect on how good a national football team is then Croatia and Uruguay would be sh1te and Russia, China and India would be brilliant.

    Wait.

Are you actually therefore suggesting that population size has no effect whatever?

    Because that would be bonkers.

  7. It's funny - I'd say that about 90% of my red dots have come on the Tartan Army threads.

On club ones, everyone can amicably criticise or praise players or teams and it's not a problem.

In here though, dissenting voices must be crushed.  It's a strange need for propaganda.  Relax people.

Unfortunately, when the name Marshall pops up I'll immediately smile and remember him flying into the back of the net at Hampden...

    It's not even close.

I find this eulogising of him on here distinctly weird.

He was fine for us - that's all.

He made a famous save in a shoot-out.  However, that's at least offset by a comedy blunder at the finals he helped us to.

I'd assumed he'd retired years ago.

If you were actively trying to almost qualify, we'd have struggled to do it better.

IIRC, after the defeat to Brazil in 1990, we needed five or six other results to go our way to qualify as one of the best third place sides. They all did, and we were heading through in injury time at the end of Uruguay v South Korea, before Uruguay scored and put us out of the second tournament in a row. b*****ds.

    Not quite.

The Uruguay goal was a kick in the stones, but I don't think it came at the end of a sequence of loads of other things falling into place.

Our record was also identical to Austria's, so we'd have wound up drawing lots if it had come to it.

Yeah, i wasn't really clear. My point was that we had two wins against teams it was assumed we'd beat (first game in both instances?) and then three which culminated in elimination, therefore only one to really celebrate

Ah, I see what you mean.

Given how many tournaments we've played in, we really have had remarkably little to shout about whilst there.

You obviously didn't include the tournaments we failed to win games at - the 50s ones as well as 86, 98 and 2020.

Basically, in the competitions that allowed some 3rd place sides to get through, we made sure to lose at least 2 games.

  11. 1 minute ago, allyo said:

Are we the only one that hasn't got through to at least one second round?

We've been really unlucky not to qualify at least once with our records in 74, 78, 82, 90, 92 and 96. (6 wins, 5 draws, 7 defeats).

The worst thing is that to Zaire and New Zealand you can add Holland, CIS and Switzerland, all wins that at full-time we finished out of the tournament. In my lifetime (52 years), the Sweden game at Italia 90 is the only win that really resulted in any great celebrations.

(And the English wonder why we celebrated a nil-nil draw)

The wins over Zaire and New Zealand didn't result in us exiting the tournament at full-time.  In both cases, they were our opening fixtures.

It's true that they weren't wildly celebrated though, as wins were expected both times.  Ultimately, however, neither win was hearty enough to get us through.

As duff as that looks, we’re not the worst. I thought it would be interesting to compare win percentages with similar sized European countries (sub 6 million pop) who had played 10 or more WC/EUROS matches in the same time frame you quoted. There’s no point comparing us with the Spains, Germanys etc.

    Croatia 42%

    Wales 38%

    Denmark 35%

    Norway 30%

    Slovakia 27%

    Scotland 22%

    N.Ireland 18%

    Rep Ireland 17%

But can anyone spot why we’re the odd man out here?

    Indeed.

All those others have made progress in tournaments - in some cases, tremendous progress.

    Not us.

The Caledonia are going to piss this tournament. This is a thread for those who don't share the pathetic losers' mentality that has held our country back for years.

I'm not convinced that we really are held back by this pathetic losers' mentality.

If we do have such a thing though, I absolutely approve of it.

Italy also had a perfectly good goal disallowed that would have made it 2-0.  Also with it being 1-1 in the 89th min we were out anyway as we had to win that game!

we were anything but robbed in that game lol

    And this too.

People who cite that game as evidence of Scotland suffering some grave injustice, should in turn be incarcerated.

this gets trotted out quite regularly. I watched the highlights recently and Leighton was solid in terms of punching away a few crosses but had only one big save of note to make and even then the Swedish striker blasted it against his torso - see the 4.29 mark from the link below. Either the highlights have edited out all the spectacular saves that Leighton made or Leighton's exploits have been embellished year on year.

    This.

It was a backs to the wall, hanging on type performance from the team for ages.  We defended heroically and rode our luck.  Leighton made a good save and held out well.  He celebrated enthusiastically on full-time.

His individual display has been wildly exaggerated though.  It's what people do.

I've just remembered that I started a thread specifically for you to moan about the inevitability of England winning the tournament, and how terrible it's going to be, so I'm understanding more now.

I don't understand this post, either literally, or as a hilariously ironic take.

So I imagined the bit saying "with current form suggesting that Scotland may be on course for an unwelcome piece of Euro history against Germany by suffering the heaviest defeat in the tournaments history" then?

    No, you didn't imagine it.

A little gently hyperbolic perhaps, but a rhetorical flourish is allowed when introducing a legitimate question.  Even then, it's said very much conditionally.
