  1. It's true that the kits were a lighter blue, certainly 88-91 and possibly more than that, but IMO that was a mistake and should be avoided. I could be wrong, but I like to think part of our identity is not being a 'certain kind of club' - wearing a darker blue is in turn part of that. That said, if it is true for next season then it might well be too late anyway.

  2. We just can't afford to pay these guys over the summer. I think Wilson will be a big miss. The value of his pace and resultant ability to recover from errors or loss of ground especially. Undervalued in terms of positioning too, IMO. Could do a job for a better team than us, and we are unlikely to acquire anyone better.

I might be in a minority but I like Simmons in the team and would be pleased to see him re-sign.

Ferry is a difficult one. Great feet and brain but just that little bit slow.

  3. Freeing Campbell might not be a bad idea IM(controversial?)O. We don't keep the ball well with him in the back four and we're too reliant on his aerial presence. Our long spell of miserly defence came when we had to find another way of doing it, and also had a complete back four comfortable in possession. Re Tade, I don't think we hoof it because he's there, I think we hoof it because we're too awkward and lacking in shorter options. If it was Weir and Baird we'd be doing the same things under any pressure (and complaining about it more).

McGlynn won't be going anywhere unless a better job appears that he can get. It's probably true that he's 'taken us as far as he can' if the budget is coming down and he can't attract better players, but I'd imagine he needs his modest salary as much as the rest of us need our own. Looking at the game yesterday, it's fairly apparent that it helped Dunfermline to be able to acquire a player like Hardie in January - along with Rutkewicz, Buchanan and whoever else - whereas we signed Gary Wales (still not fit enough to play apparently) and more recently McBride. If we had even one of Cardle, Graham etc yesterday we'd've been far more dangerous a proposition. Four centre mids! FWIW I thought Simmons made a decent fist of it, but just one natural wide player would've given us an alternative to the one option we seemed to have. There is inevitably a limit to what can be achieved with the type of recruitment the Rovers can muster at present.

  4. Aye!

It'd be brilliant if we did go all the way this season so the younger supporters get a taste of some of that. Their time will come some day, hopefully on the 23rd of April this year.

I was a wee boy during that spell, albeit quite an alert one - I never knew how much it was spoiling me really. I've often thought, in more recent years, how good it could've been to be 18-23 sort of age (and have a bit of disposable income without too much responsibility) when the Rovers were at their peak. Just to be able to follow it fully and ride the wave 100%. I was able to do that through Calderon's title win and it was a brilliant time - and that was only the 2nd. I'd be truly delighted for folk like Hank - that have only ever known a relatively underwhelming period, eg relegation, failure in the 1st, financial turmoil, Anelka etc, AND STILL made a bond for life with the club - if we could make that game and the end of this season that kind of Event. They've put the hard work in supporting the team before the reward has come, quite the reverse of folk around my age. I realise, obviously, it was the same for people 7 or 8 years older than I am (ie 35ish).

  5. After really enjoying last season and seeing us improve so consistently I did think about eventual promotion and what it would entail. I don't really want to be in the SPL at all, TBH - we'd have to spend a bit to avoid humiliation, and that spending would be a heavy burden should we come back down. The OF are proper offensive to me and I hate seeing them in the North Stand, and pissing in the gardens of Pratt Street; tearing up Stark's Bar or whatever. I want to win every game and the 1st means a great deal as a prize, but the Premier is a dead end really.

UNLESS IT WAS SIXTEEN TEAMS AND IT WAS BARRIE

  6. Joo Magoo's never been one for throwing young guys in though really, has he? Last 15 mins on Sat maybe, but I'd be very surprised if he started. He's coming into a team that's doing well because they work hard, and work for each other - I don't want anything to upset that, personally. If he puts a shift in and can add something, then great. [/burst the baw mode]

  7. You can see it the way Simmons holds on to the ball a bit longer, trying to drag his marker in close and commit him before releasing the ball. Davo tends (or I find that he does) to release the ball to early and thus no space is created.

Agreed - Simmons is also our only player - as far as I've noticed - to see an easy pass to Player A but give it to Player B, who is being closed down a bit quicker but will immediately move it to Player A, who is then in that bit more room than if Simmons had given it straight to him. (There is probably a name for that but uninitiated as I am I don't know it.) I do think he's by far our best footballer when he is motivated, and if we have any ambition to retain the ball he needs to be playing.

  8. I totally accept that Calderon's budget was pretty big and what he achieved, aesthetically tremendous as it was, was little more than the minimum expected - but I still remember it as fondly as any general period of Rovershood that I've known. I've been watching the Huesca results, which have mostly very good, and managed to watch them online a couple of times. Albacete is a definite step up and will be aiming at promotion - should they manage, I'd love to see Calderon and Paco in the away dugout at Camp Nou or Bernabeu. I'd probably keich my brain, in fact.
