  1. Shite for Brown that it's injury that is almost certainly going to rule him out of the Euros.

On the other hand it's hardly awful that it has probably secured Shankland's place in the squad (assuming he continues his current form).

But zooming out a bit, it's got to be a concern how thin we now are up top. Beyond Dykes, Adams and Shankland, who is there? With Nisbet, Brown and Stewart are all medium term crocked, we might be in a bit of a pickle if injury strikes any of those three.

Christie can do a job up front. There has been discussion on here re McTominay or Ferguson playing there. Not sure how Burke is doing, but he might be a potential sticking plaster backup.

Am I missing someone else who might be able to play the Scotland forward role?

Edit: forgot about Tommy Conway, though I'm not sure he's at all ready for a full cap let alone a finals squad inclusion.

Completely agree with this.  As good as McGinn has been for us it would not serve any purpose to over-play him.  I keep thinking back to the Ukraine play-off game in June 22........he was completely off the pace and looked a shadow of himself - even missed an unbelievable sitter. I would like to see Ferguson start as he has been really impressive for Bologna.  I have watched a few of their games more intrigued to see how he is playing and must say he is perhaps their most influencial player and drives the team forward.

    Agree re starting Ferguson.

However re McGinn in that Ukraine playoff, end of season tiredness might have played a part, but I think it was our shape that made us (McGinn included) look so dreadful. The gap between him and McGregor and Gilmour further back was humongous, and left us chasing shadows in our largely fruitless efforts to even get in the ball.

I've got to say that red-dotting someone's first post is a pretty classy move and not in the least a bit mental.

I suspect the red dot might be because it looks suspiciously like general disarray/dryhorce/mubtumbo back to "make PnB great again"

  4. Shankenstein scoring again tonight in the league.

We tend to channel goalscoring opportunities for our midfielders, but as the Georgia away game showed, there can certainly be a need for a change of approach. Surely Shankland has to be in the squad with that in mind?

Italy and Portugal please as it's been a while for Italy and absolute ages for Portugal (Paolo Futre and some unknown called Jorge Cadete tearing us a nice new one over in their midden). Don't care about the third option. Switzerland or Tchurmany.

We played Portugal a few years ago at Hampden. I don't blame you for erasing the memory 😩

He's a wee bam with a shite attitude so it's a no from me. He's also a jobber.

Have I missed something? He always came across as a decent guy and I don't remember any attitude issues?

Don't think he makes the cut for the squad tho.

Mckenna joining Copenhagen, still in champions league

Perfect! So long as he sees game time there then that's him almost certainly on the plane to Euro 2024.

It'd be brilliant if he ended up starting in the champions league later stages.

Read the friendly article in The Herald that's going about, struggling to see why we would take the Gibraltar game. Clarke always talks about "being tested" or "needing tested". Before the England and France games he said that with Euro qualification and Pot 1 Nation League ties on the horizon, we could be faced with opponents of that standard, however again, Gibraltar don't fall into that category.

Is it "an easy tie" to assess players....probably too close to the Euros for that.....is it a way to get some shooting practice in......I don't think Clarke is that type of manager....so all in all it just seems like a strange friendly to me. I can only think that were the only nation that were open to face us at that time.

Probably partly to get a game in the warm weather conditions, partly to (surely) get a convincing win and chalk a few goals and have our strikers feeling sharp and confident.

Clarke did have us play Luxembourg before Euro 2020. I know they're a level or two above Gibraltar (93rd vs 201st in the rankings), but still far from a 'testing' opponent (though we made heavy weather of it and - ironically - IIRC it actually highlighted, maybe even compounded, a lack of sharpness from our forwards).

There is more chance of Elvis being alive than McBurnie making the plane for Germany!

    Ah-haw-haw.

If he scored a dozen goals between now and May, then sure. But he won't, it's as simple as that. There is a useful player in there and he has that bit of niggle in him that can be useful to unsettle opponents, but his career and form have been patchy as feck for years now.

Didn’t want to start a new thread, so this one seems the most appropriate.

Would anyone be interested in buying one of the 150 year anniversary tops in an XL ahead of the Euros? Tags still on and never worn.

My mate picked it up for me during the first release but it’s miles too big and has been sitting in my wardrobe since. They’re currently going for £90 at JD, but I’d take £70 if anyone is interested. Can PM over pictures etc if anyone wants a look.

Hit the pies and fill it out - get your money's worth! 😄

Pretty sure I remember him on Sky sports news as a pundit during Euros in 2021. It was before England v Scotland game and he did refer to England in a manner that he seems to identify with them more. Maybe at that point he had though he was unlikely to play for Scotland again. Can't really see huge need to bring him in. Midfield we have plenty options and younger players that will have more long term future. Likes of Kenny McLean seems to be a good presence in the squad and knows his role as a FUCKING SHAGGER

My mate's brother works for the National Team's analytics department and was saying that on the second morning of training, Anderson was running slightly late as his sliders were too big for him so it was taking him longer than usual to walk and go down stairs. This meant he was last to get to the shuttle bus taking them from the hotel to the training pitches and every time he went to get on the bus, the driver would accelerate away slightly. This went on for a minute or so before Kenny McLean launched a wine gum off his head through the open bus doors and he just decided enough was enough and stormed off. On the way back into the hotel, one of his oversized sliders caught on the front step and he stumbled through the doors whilst the rest of the team were pointing and laughing. He essentially just packed his bags and left after that, with the oversized sliders left poking out the bin of his hotel room.

    A "Sliding Doors" moment

  13. BBC: Tom Cairney, the 32-year-old midfielder who has signed a new contract with Premier League club Fulham, has not given up hope a recall to the Scotland squad ahead of the Euro 2024 finals. (TalkSport)

It always felt as if there was a lack of interest from TC's side as well (as him being semi-fringe status), so it's interesting to hear that he's making noises about wanting a call-up. Could just be because there'a the carrot of a finals appearance, of course.

  14. That's Salah off to the African Cup of Nations for perhaps 7 of Liverpool's next games. Shite luck that Oakley Doakley is injured as this could have been his opportunity to get a run and make a claim for a call-up.

Aye, I agree. I guess it's the same in any field of work. Looking for new horizons & trying to grow doesn't always work out.

It's worth a try all the same.

Definitely worth trying rather than shying away from in the broader sense. Even if the footballing side of things doesn't work out, living in a different culture, picking up a new language etc are things that enrich your life. There are the players who become homesick too tho and come home pretty quickly. Even then, it's an important life lesson learned.

The only hyperbole is you taking my opinion as canon.

I didn't take it as canon. If I had I wouldn't have identified it as hyperbole. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Anyway, it's Xmas, so let's not start a tedious vocab war. You take my general point that moving abroad can be good for a player, but is no guarantee?

  17. 3 hours ago, Venti said:

Think it reinforces the point that going abroad will improve you tenfold.

The easy option was always going down south.

Happily more players are now open to a move to the continent.

Just wish (being greedy) our talent was more spread out positionally.

A bit hyperbolic surely? I think going abroad is certainly more adventurous and will expose you to different styles of football, but it's hardly a rule that it makes you a better player. Not every move works out like Paul Lambert's or Lewis Ferguson's.

I’d take him back at Dens but ffs

With Ross Stewart out again and Doak gaining nothing fast we are unfortunately going to the Euros with a totally uninspiring front line

I fear, but hope it doesn’t derail, a potentially great summer

Doak is out till probably April too.

Tbf tho, it's hardly like Stewart was unquestionably our lewandowski in waiting. He looks a decent prospect but that's all. Conway and Nisbet are performing reasonably well at the same level as Stewart's at, and perhaps the former could provide the bit of freshening up our fwd line might benefit from.

  19. Main thing Conway has on his side is age, in that he's relatively fresh out of the box at 21. That doesn't really mean anything of great substance though other than we can hope he's got a ceiling higher than the other current contenders have. Hope, of course, is not a strategy, but when has that ever stopped us? 😄

Anyway, here's hoping for a goal glut from Conway or any of the other guys 🤞🏻
