  1. I thought Luca Connell might have featured for the Celtic first team over the latter part of the season so it's a surprise to see him loaned out to Queen's Park. Talk about using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut!
  2. I understand Stenhousemuir were very good in the opening period and passed up some good chances before the yung team came on and capitulated.
  3. Turns out we played East Fife in a friendly last night - and got well and truly smashed to pieces in the process!
  4. I realise I misread a tweet from Jamie Swinney from a few days ago - I thought he said we had a fully-fit squad to pick from, not an almost fully-fit squad. I didn't realise Yeats' injury was so serious. I thought he was expected to be playing again at the end of January? If Yeats is out, I'd have Adam McCracken in a left-back. I'm not convinced that Ryan Watters qualification of "having a left foot" is enough to get a game.
  5. After 10 weeks away, it feels so good to be able to write a thread looking forward to an upcoming League 2 match! And what a way to kick things off - the biggest game in the country this weekend between two thoroughbreds: Stenhousemuir -vs- Albion Rovers. I do not know what to expect from this one. It feels like a brand new season and not a resumption - a lot of teams have turned over their squads, with the Rovers in particular looking like some grab-bag West of Scotland League outfit after their recent shopping spree. They were a funny bunch earlier in the campaign, mostly terrible but sometimes capable of getting a decent result. Of their new cohort, I think David Cox could be a good signing and I always quite liked the look of him at Cowdenbeath, but I'm not sold on Jamie McKernon, a player who struggled to get around the pitch in his last stint in the SPFL with Stenhousemuir, or Ryan Stevenson. They can't be any worse than when we pumped them 3-1 at the beginning of the season, right enough. As for the Warriors, the only major import is in defence with Adam Corbett coming in from Spartans to replace the departed Andy Munro. I don't know a thing about Corbett but he's a "late developer" and could work quite well together at the back with Creag Little. Perhaps most importantly, we should have our full complement to pick from. I don't know how fit they'll be, but at least they'll be available for selection. I think Davie Irons will go with: - Botti Biabi - Tam Muir - David Hopkirk - - Jack Hodge - Ryan Blair - Callum Tapping - - Callum Years - Creag Little - Adam Corbett - Jonathan Tiffoney - - Paddy Martin - I'd be very disappointed if we don't win this. I know we'll be in for a far tougher match than our last encounter but still, if we're serious about pushing for the top four, we have to beat the Rovers at home.
  6. That was a thoroughly enjoyable game of football. It's quite easy to get distracted when you're watching a match on your laptop, either by other tabs on your browser or by your phone, but I could not take my eyes away from it today. It really had a little bit of everything. I've watched a lot of Championship streams since the start of the year but the ones involving Queen of the South and Alloa have always been the most entertaining. The key moment in the match, as others have pointed out, was Connor Shields hitting the post with the score at 2-1, then Alloa breaking on the counter and Lee Connelly equalising with a lovely curled effort just before half-time. Who knows what might have happened if it had finished 3-1 at the interval? There was a lot of controversy over Ayo Obileye's red card and, without wishing to sound like a mark, I've seen them given. He lost control of the ball and went studs up on Ray Grant but, all the same, he didn't seem to be out of control of his body. Nevertheless, Greg Aitken had a pretty good view and seemed certain of the call. I'm surprised to see shouts claiming Andy Graham should have been sent off in the second half. It was a yellow-card offence, nothing more, and his anger was directed at the midfielder who failed to track Dapo Mebude, not Mebude himself. If Andy Graham was to have been dismissed, it should have been for that godawful penalty midway through the second half. Absolutely dreadful, but I'm pleased it didn't ultimately cost him. Liam Buchanan's winning goal was very well taken but I was surprised to see no-one attempt to close him down. Just because there is an Obileye-shaped hole in front of the back four, doesn't mean someone shouldn't make the effort to fill it when the team is on the back foot! There were a number of good performances on both sides. For the home side, Wullie Gibson looked classy in possession and I thought Euan East got through the power of work in the middle of the park; Alloa's Jon Robertson was a powerhouse in midfield and Innes Cameron led the line well - he really has come onto a game in recent weeks and I'm sure he'll be part of the Kilmarnock first team next term. I'd also like to praise the commentary team - after sitting through the dreadful "Fermer Innes" last weekend on Arbroath FC TV, the two commentators today combined a good play-by-play account of the match with little diversions and humorous observations. They became a little overexcited towards the end of the match, although I can understand they were looking for consistency in Aitken's calls, but on the whole they're two of the best in the division, up there with Raith Rovers' output. What a division the Championship is! The bottom half of the league is so tightly bunched together. Last weekend, I was surprised to hear "Fermer Innes" boast that Arbroath should, given their run of form, be looking at a mid-table finish, maybe even think about getting into the top four. Seven days later and that bragging looks wildly misplaced as they're just four points off the bottom. One thing's for sure - do not write off this Alloa Athletic side, and do not go on regional BBC television and say they'll lose to Queens.
  7. Arch, you sonuvabitch, you've beaten me to it! A polite reminder that tonight's episode is half an hour later than normal - we're going on at 11pm on the BBC Scotland channel. If that's a little too past your bedtime, it's also available on the BBC iPlayer for the next 28 days. We will see you later this evening!
  8. That was a thoroughly entertaining game of football. Arbroath started the match well and really looked the part - their movement down the flanks and from Michael McKenna up top was really impressive - and they took their two goals well. Queens seemed shellshocked but once Ayo Obileye took control of the middle of the park, that allowed Dapo Mebude, Isaiah Jones and Connor Shields to bound forward on the attack. They really were excellent and Arbroath seemed befuddled and confused by their forward runs (although the home side really did themselves no favours with some of their defending). Obileye's goal just after the interval probably killed off the match and I don't think Arbroath were ever likely to get back into the game from that point on. McKenna dropped out of it, Ben Williamson couldn't influence it and Queens strolled to the finish.
  9. Hamstring. He was chasing down a ball towards the touchline and keeled over holding the back of his leg. Looked a sore one.
  10. They don't really seem all that interested about what's going on the pitch. Less play-by-play commentary, more funny and amusing stories!
  11. This has been an extraordinary half of football and I'm delighted to see the smile wiped off the face of "Fermer Innes". His painful cry as Dapo Mebude tapped home Queens' third was worth the £12 alone.
  12. Good afternoon, this is just a polite reminder to say A View from the Terrace is on the BBC Scotland channel @ 10:30pm this evening. Tonight's show features a confetti cannon, some mirth, and a special guest appearance from the legendary Jackie McNamara. Miss it at your peril!
  13. Good evening, this is a polite reminder that A View from the Terrace is on tonight @ 10:30pm on the BBC Scotland channel. I understand the panel were joined by Clyde FC manager Danny Lennon and he certainly made an impression on them! Take care and enjoy the show.
  14. Aye, I'm going to have to stick up for Wullie Gibson (again!) - he was absolutely fine at Stenhousemuir. We were a very poor side at the time but he brought a degree of composure on the ball and quality passing sorely missing from our midfield. He was the best player on the park in our famous win over Waterford in the Challenge Cup. When Gibson left midway through the season, the reaction from the support was mostly indifferent, but he did the Warriors a good turn!
  15. Enjoyed that a lot! It was a real slobberknocker that could have gone either way and Dundee will probably have been disappointed not to have taken a point, but if you defend like chumps and have someone like Danny Mullen missing two chances in five minutes from one yard out, you're always going to be onto a loser. (While we're on the subject of bad defending, I don't think I've ever seen someone as slow to clear a ball off the line as Gregor Buchanan was for Jason Cummings' goal!) It is also my sincere belief that Wullie Gibson is the best player in the country outside of the Premiership. His raids down the right, his touch and his movement, as well as his doggedness in defending, has really marked him out over the past two months. His goal was supremely well-taken too, although Dundee might wanted to have tried closing him down at some point during his 50-yard run with the ball. Shouts to Rohan Ferguson too who looked confident and assured over the match. It's hard to believe that Queens were in such a bad state heading into Christmas, on and off the park (did anyone get round to explaining what George Galloway was up to?), but they've been very good ever since. Fair play to them!
  16. Hello, this is a polite reminder that tonight's episode of A View from the Terrace is on tonight at 10:30pm on the BBC Scotland channel. I've been told it's both "funny" and "thought-provoking", so who are you to refuse it?
  17. She's brilliant company! She's got a very interesting outlook on the game and could've talked for ages about the current climate and where we're going. It's a yes from me!
  18. Yes, indeed, please watch this evening's show. I've been informed the panel are joined by erstwhile Scotland manager Shelley Kerr, so if you're looking for laughter, you know where to go! (The BBC Scotland channel at 10:30pm this evening, of course.)
  19. An interesting enough game and one that Alloa Athletic deserved to win. It was shaping up to be a fantastic encounter, with Queen of the South doing really well in the opening stages and perpetually getting behind the Wasps' defence, but it all seemed to grind to a halt after big Andy Graham's equaliser and then Connor Shields' substitution. The contest lost its tempo and Queen of the South only ever threatened again at the death when Neil Parry was forced into a good save from a header. Players like Wullie Gibson and Aidan Fitzpatrick, who both started well, seemed to drop out of it entirely. I thought Alloa were a lot better in the second half - Jon Robertson made a difference when he came on - and Kevin Cawley took his goal well. Innes Cameron should have made sure of the win but he somehow failed to connect with a great ball across the goal line. No issues with the stream, and I thought the young play-by-play commentator was very good. I'd say something about the pre-match music but after reading the loathsome "Wasps1" will get a kick out of it, I'll refrain. How on earth is he still involved at the Recs!
  20. Why are Queen of the South so shit at defending corners? Every match I've seen them in this season, they've lost a goal from a set-piece.
  21. Stenhousemuir FC have signed Adam Corbett on an 18-month deal from the Spartans. Is he good? What sort of player can we expect?
  22. And we've signed a centre-back! He's called Adam Corbett, he's 23, he joins from Spartans on an 18-month contract, we paid an undisclosed fee for him and he's "highly rated".
  23. Aye, liked him a lot as a player. He was vocal, aggressive, never let his head drop and seemed like a good guy to have around our younger players. Fancied himself as a bit of an Alessandro Nesta a few too many times but a steady stopper, and that's something you really need at this level.
  24. Andy Munro has left the club and returned to Forfar Athletic. The statement on the club website says the Loons made two bids for him before a bid was accepted at the end of last week. I did not see this transfer coming. I would imagine we'd have someone else lined up at centre-back to replace because losing our captain and one of two centre-backs with any real experience in the game could be damaging!
