Took Alloa in yesterday to tick off my bucket list of grounds i've not been to in 5 or 6 decades.

Fair play to Alloa it ticked all my boxes.

Friendly enough folk in the 200ish? crowd.

Plenty of seats for that level and cover on 3 sides. Catering good plus obviously more available for a bigger crowd.

Station about one bus stop away and excellent service to and from Glasgow.

Did notice though Alloa charge £18 for a normal league match!!!

Would i pay £18 to watch Alloa, afraid not, sorry.

Unfortunately that admission price is pretty much the going rate for majority of teams in the division.

    Glad you enjoyed the visit.

    Mike standing down as chairman.

Probably felt the time was right given he has taken on the SFA Presidency, which is the reasoning he gives in the blurb.

Wouldn't expect it will have much impact, if any, on what we fans see and I imagine if there are any major decisions then Mike will be fully consulted on those. Is he not still the major/only shareholder?

Had a look at Andy Allan's LinkedIn profile and he certainly seems to be an individual with loads of commercial/financial experience.

I'd imagine not much change printer and he should still be majority shareholder by some distance. He will still be running the show, albeit less operational (I suspect).

Back in the Hopkins/Lawlor days they regularly rotated the role of chairman, but Mike was still the main decision maker.

He's said that a number of times since coming to Alloa too, although there were a few occasions last season when we did go with something very like a 4-2-3-1.

I said this a few times last season too, but the idea that 2 up front is automatically more attacking than 1 is flawed. Perhaps the most attacking Alloa side I've seen (perhaps) was the Jack Ross team with Spence at the top and Cawley, Flannigan and Kirkpatrick behind. They had a huge goalscoring threat and were absolutely terrific to watch. The subsequent Goodwin teams in the same shape with slightly different personnel were also very good. Those were more effective attacking Alloa teams than last year with 2 up front in Sammon and MacIver. I do feel we are currently blessed with very good creative options for a 3 behind a striker and that we could potentially be as good as anyone in the league with that kind of shape.

That said, those creative players can obviously also flourish in other formations, just need to ensure we get another really decent attacker (at least 1) if we're going with 2. Although - and this was mentioned last night on comms and last season here - we could also play Kev up with Sammon and he would do well, better than at RB! And that's perhaps the most fundamental point, play men in something like their natural roles whenever possible. The first leg against Accies was one of our best performances with key men deployed in their strongest positions.

Peter Grant tried the midfield diamond and messed around with the back 3/5...then realised 4-2-3-1 suited us best and reverted back.

It looks as if Brian Rice will rigidly stick to the 3 centre backs unless tweaking the formation during a game- and I guess Taggart and Devenny should push on through that setup.

    Suspect he would go with:

    Morrison

    Mackay-Neill-Devine

    Taggart-Hetherington-Virtanen-Devenny

    Scougall

    Donnelly-Sammon

Which looks fairly strong, but this would also be grand:

    Morrison

    Taggart-Devine-Neill-Devenny

    Hetherington-Virtanen

    Cawley-Donnelly-Scougall

    Sammon

Where did Virtanen play? Holding mid? He looked decent enough at RB against Morton but hard to take a lot from a preseason friendly.

Squad is coming together nicely. Would like to see us sign another CB to help ensure Taggs gets played at RB. Would also like another striker, we've no one in on loan yet either so still got the option of trying to get a young striker in on loan

Virtanen centre mid with Hetherington. Agree with post above I think that duo with Scougall just ahead has the making of a fairly formidable engine room. A really good balance and Virtanen also appears to enjoy a tackle.

Kevin Cawley was right back again which went as expected, so if a signing means the wee man can move further up the park permanently I'm all for it.

Trialist striker in the 2nd half looked like he might have something to offer.

Scoreline last night was a fair reflection, we didn't really trouble Livingston all that much. But our defensive shape looked pretty good, with Coulson always busy. Competed fairly well.

Did you not think tonight was?!

It was the second best game I've seen at The Recs this year. All the others are equal 1st.

Are we likely to get any new kits this season?

Wasn't the best football to watch last night but more minutes in the legs!

Think it's same kits. The white one we are wearing in pre season will eventually get the player names and squad numbers. Expect that to be our main away strip- doubt we will see much of the orange one this season, can't think of a fixture off the top of my head where it will be needed.

  6. Celtics first team have a friendly in Japan on the 19th, must be B team. Doubt they'd want their first team rocking up to The Recs after what happened to them last time anyway 👊👊🤕

Video was terrific with Andys a capella at the end.

Tonight's game was a standard pre season non event. Insert as many "minutes under their belts" type pre season clichés as possible..

I don't think we need to sign players that were not rated at Clyde

Could be a number of reasons for that though rather than just generalising based on where they finished last season. George Stanger was at relegated Dumbarton yet proved to be a really good signing. Kevin O'Hara another who had barely scored before joining Alloa.

Not sure about the boy Mcdonald based on his outing on Saturday but more about how he fits into our squad rather than what has passed before.

Think if we could add another decent striker we could have a really good squad for the season. Maybe even get a striker in on loan.

Guessing nothing came of the Boyd coming back rumours?

Last I heard Accies were in the running for Boyd but they've since signed OHara and Henderson

    Up against Stanger's Ayr .typical

    St johnstone at perth ?

S**t  just realised i will miss all but the first game

Going by Kevs format on the previous page (which is accurate based on previous group fixture formats) we'd play St J and Stirling at home, Ayr and Stenny away.

Will await confirmation though, usually get the fixtures about a week later than the draw

Apparently we're negotiating compensation for Stanger, likely to be much?

Doubt it. We only had him a year, it's not as if we've developed him since he was 14.

Alloa tend not to be tough to deal with in these circumstances and reputationally its reaped its rewards. Makes us more attractive option for players looking for a platform to return/move to full time football which provides way more value than holding out for a few hundred quid extra

Daily Record has us after him.

I'm a bit surprised Falkirk have released him. Didn’t really seem to get a full chance with you. I know he made an error or two and didn't look overly comfortable on the ball, but I believe he's a decent enough keeper. Maybe McGlynn has someone better lined up e.g. Jamie MacDonald?

That's what I call a goalkeeper! Outstanding for us for that brief spell he had on loan.

  12. 9 hours ago, Jagwasp said:

The fact is that players have been released by the club and there is nothing stopping  the club stating that they are releasing them upon the end of their contract like many other clubs have done .
A good or bad example on what ever way you want to look at it would be Durnan is on Dumbarton site where they state he has signed showing a picture of him with the Dumbarton scarf over his head without our club actually advising us he has been released. I think it’s poor & stand by it.

No your point is perfectly valid based on that example. From what I can see though, the club are taking the most risk averse stance on announcements and I can understand that completely. The club aren't deliberately holding back on information just to annoy the supporters.

Also not that bothered that Durnan is parading a Dumbarton scarf to be honest 🙂 but I'm sure he'll do fine in the league below.

  13. Players are still under contract until next week, nobody has officially been released yet- not sure what you are looking for the club to report on that basis. If players want to report their status on social media that's their choice, and nothing to do with what the club can report at this point in time.

  14. 17 minutes ago, printer said:

Yeah, neither do I. He can be frustrating at times (a bit greedy, loses the ball too often), but if he can get amongst the goals again then he can contribute well enough.

That was the most frustrating thing for me to his game, he would hold onto the ball too long and lose possession frequently. I think Boyd was okay and we could certainly do a lot worse- but although my Cawley comparison was in jest, it does hold some merit.

I think the Barrys boy thing arises from that day Magic Hat referenced at Dumbarton. I don't think it's a huge deal he didn't at least acknowledge the ovation he got, but it was a bit weird he seemed to deliberately ignore it. Might have just been he was annoyed he was subbed off.

  15. A great delivery very valuable and big Sammon in particular will be gutted to see Church go. Definitely has come on leaps and bounds since the Bold Barry was screaming at him from the touchline. Andy Robertson would even have struggled in those circumstances. Wasn't at the level of Callum Waters and Daryl Meggatt obviously but still has enough attributes to at least give full time a right go again. Agree with Waspie good to see someone take a step back to ultimately take a step forward and that will also assist in future recruitment's.

    Will we miss him  ?

    Certainly not

Happening with Hetherington then? I reckon he will go to you like he’s obviously got a huge affinity with guys there but would be happy to see him return to Gayf. Good versatile solid player

Still under contract to Falkirk for another couple of weeks. Wherever he goes, can't do much in an official capacity til then.

  17. Several strands to this one, but I can see where folk are coming from. I certainly agree we need something extra up top to what we had last season.

Rodden had become a slightly forgotten man due to being out for a huge chunk of the season through injury. On that basis, I also thought he may have been first to go to make room for others. However, he probably exceeded expectations for me and didn't do a lot wrong before being injured. Probably deserves another crack at it on a personal level. But you would like to think the manager will explore the market for another option up top and I'm sure he will.

Where is the news of hetherington Signing ?

Just a rumour doing the rounds from several sources at the moment which suggests it has traction. May well be that it's either agreed in principle or club are holding off on announcing if its happened (could be until his contract at Falkirk runs down but I'm totally speculating).
