  1. We're talking about a once in 125 years situation here. Might as well budget based on David Icke being right about Arran being underwater.

This is an extremely rare situation exacerbated by some very unfortunate global circumstances. I don't think clubs should budget based on the most valuable club in the country going tits up.

Global? Was that a typo - surely you meant 'Govan'?

  2. It's in the EBT mandate of legally using the loan as a LOAN and must be repaid back in full or in installments before the employee retires.

So how many loans were paid back before players and staff retired from the club ?.

Never mind your Scots law here because these so called loans were paid ! OFFSHORE ! and are not covered by Scots law.

Can I ask you a question ? so would you call the rankers EBT system of payment a "loan" or "bonuses"

The trusts were based in Jersey, but the payments were made in Scotland to UK residents, so of course they're subject to Scots law. If they weren't, why would HMRC be all over them?

  3. Totally pathetic numbers. 17k average for a country of that size with a single league of 18 teams? And remember that basketball and ice-hockey are played indoors.

I don't agree. The numbers are actually very impressive for a newish sport.

The size of the country is irrelevant. There are only 18 teams and the distances between them are huge - you need to look at the local population rather than the national one. Most of the clubs are in cities with a population of between 500,000 and a million, and most of the stadums don't have a capacity much more than 17,000.

Can you imagine the third most popular sport in the UK getting an average 17,000 crowd in Edinburgh or Glasgow, or London or Manchester for that matter? Even our first most popular sport can't average that in Scotland outside the OF!

Come to think about it, what is the third most popular sport in attendance terms? Shinty?

  4. Absolutely right. There's been only cursory mention of this tawdry affair here in Australia where, in fairness, fitba is a distant fourth in popularity across the various codes. At the very beginning it gained press in a couple of columns, but nothing more - and this was more in relation to Matt MacKay going to China at the outset. There have been other, similar scandals across sport here over the past years, but nothing on the potential scale of the Rangers situation. It simply hasn't captured the public imagination over here, which is strange given Rangers' global supportTM.

Was pretty sure you'd started the main thread irrespective of the merging, but don't mind being corrected. What I do know is that your commentary, along with Granny Danger, WhiteRoseKillie, and a few other notables in particular, has been head and shoulders above not only much of the supposition on here but also the mainstream Scottish media in general. And for that, you should take a bow.

You don't need to that far to get away from it. Here in England it occasionally gets a small paragraph tucked away alongside the volleyball or ping-pong.

  5. I amended it to Road Traffic Offences. - you'd lose your licence for being caught @ 130mph and might face jail time for the driving offence, but they wouldn't invoke a suspended theft-related sentence (unless you were fleeing from the scene of a further housebreaking!)

They might - the law says "another offence (whether or not punishable with imprisonment)". It's up to a court to decide whether it's appropriate.

  6. Naw - don't believe suspensed sentences work that way - they are intended to act as a deterrent from repeating the same behaviour at a later date.

To use a silly analogy, if I get a suspended sentence for housebreaking, it wouldn't be valid to invoke the supended sentence cos I return my library books late.

That is indeed silly - returning your library books late is not a crime.

If you get a suspended sentence for housebreaking, and then get convicted for another crime, say assault, the original sentence will be activated and you'll go down the steps.

  7. Let's be serious for a minute. How many of Europe's big teams, AC Milan, Barca, Real Madrid, Man City, Bayern Munich etc, would be willing to send a team to Glasgow in the middle of a domestic and European season for a friendly with Rangers? Against a Rangers team whose players have had no competitive matches all season and will be looking to prove a point, I really dont see any major European sides risking any of their players in that kind of environment.

Where would Rangers get these players anyway, with no league or Cup income, how could they afford to retain players?

Would the SFA sanction referees to officiate at a club who have been suspended?

With Rangers not having a UEFA licence, would UEFA allow matches to go ahead against teams involved in UEFA competitions, Champions league, Europa Cup etc.?

No, I dont see this coming off at all. Rangers best bet would be a couple of tours, with the USA then Australia/New Zealand probably being their best bet. Keeping the flame alive around the globe.

If they're suspended, other SFA member clubs can't play them, nor can foreign teams without FIFA permission, which is unlikely (FIFA Statute 79.1).

Suspension basically means they can't play football, competitive or otherwise.

  8. Glentoran, Crusaders, Portadown, Glenavon, Ballymena, Coleraine....? :) The suspension thing would be a dangerous precedent for other clubs with dodgy finances so I seriously doubt the SFA will go there willingly but with some serious arm twisting from FIFA it's difficult to predict how this will all unfold now, which may explain why Green is reported to be keen to do a deal with the SFA:

If they are suspended, will they be able to play friendlies? I doubt it.

Also, if they are suspended for at least a season, would the SPL keep their place open and carry on with 11 clubs? Again, I doubt it.

  9. That would require the approval of the FA, the SFA, the league they'd be joining (I haven't a clue where Banstead play btw), of UEFA, and of FIFA. It'd also set a precedent, for say Benfica moving into the Spanish system, and hence chaos. It'd also see them spending years and years just to get to League 2.

    I perceive certain flaws, therefore.

I'd never heard of Banstead Athletic until Wednesday night, and I've lived in Banstead for three years!

They play in the Premier Division of the Combined Counties League, which is level NINE of English football. That should make relegation to SFL3 a more attractive proposition for the ****.

  10. Another common misconception. You do not need to be fit and proper to own a football club you only need to pass that test to become chairman, director, secretary or any other official position. Celtic and previously Rangers shares are traded on a stock market so the owners could frequently change and be effectively anyone.

True, but I'd imagine anyone chipping in to the consortium would want a seat on the board. They can't be expecting to make money so they'll want a bit of status/glory and the opportunity to rub shoulders with the great and good.

  11. It Seems Green won't announce his 20 man consortium until June 6th, and the fact that he has been phoning Freddy Shepherd makes me think that is all a load of shit that he has a 20 man consortium, he sounds like a man that is desperate to now get people on board and is trying to buy himself some time, by stalling on the identity of these other backers.

Won't the members of the mysterious consortium also have to pass the 'fit and proper person' test? That might rule out some of the names suggested so far.
