  1. Charlton / Dumbarton fan here. Plus points of DJ are that he can sometimes wriggle out of tight spots on the wing, generally at his best in one touch plays and that he is a good community ambassador. However, he rarely makes good use of the ball. He seemed to be signed on the basis that he scored a couple of crackers against us while at Swindon. On his last game he seemed to be carrying a bit of timber. Charlton have been trying to offload him for a while now and I'm a bit shocked that he got as good a gig as St. Johnstone. Hope he does well for you.

  2. @microdave have you contacted Carers of West Dunbartonshire? https://carerswd.org/

They might be able to give you some advice.

I care for my Mum, but she gets 4 visits a day from WDC Carers, all arranged when she was discharged from hospital 4 years ago. Sounds like your Mum has fallen between 2 stools in that respect.

You're doing an amazing job but you also need some help and a bit of respite, all the best

I’m at Dulwich Hamlet today and the standard is so far below L2. We would comfortably beat these sides, even on current form.

Well Ben Dempsey and Dipo Akinyemi hardly pulled up trees there but are regular starters at Championship Ayr

Apparantly Dumbarton were going to call a pitch inspection for 5ish then decided it wasn't needed and consulted with groundsman over phone and then agreed they would let ref make call when he turned up. Absolute shambles

That strikes me as very plausible, and not calling for a pitch inspection was a very, very bad call. Can't defend DFC on this occasion.

  5. First gig of 2019 done - Carson McHone.

1st support act was a local guy called Flew The Arrow. Describes his music as deep. Actually about as deep as a puddle on the pavement. Decent enough guitar player but used some fast finger picking and awkward, ragged key changes to describe the fact that he had no tunes and that his lyrics were fucking dreadful. Horrible overly wrought angst. It ended up sounding really disingenuous.
2nd support was Matt Owens, formerly of Noah and the Whale. Complete opposite. His stuff isn't winning a prize for originality but there was enough about his music to enjoy. Funny on stage and clearly out to entertain the crowd, his set was pretty much the ideal gig opener. Very enjoyable without ever risking to upstage the headliner.
Carson McHone headline slot. Just her and a guitar. Her songs sounded simple enough stripped down until you heard her voice and her smart and affecting lyrics and you realised just how well she'd crafted them. A great singer/songwriter who also played some out and out country that you'd find in any stereotypical southern dive bar honkey tonk without ever becoming a pastiche of a southern honkey tonk singer. Her southern accent was in evidence but she never overplayed it. She name checked a few influences between songs, citing the writing of Thomas Wolfe or the way Hemingway had described the relationship between Zelda and F Scott Fitzgerald and how their competing creative needs acted to hurt their relationship with each other - clearly a nod to one of Carson's own past relationships. Her charming and engaging stage presence coupled with serious songwriting and performing talent left the crowd utterly smitten with her music.

Is Flew The Arrow the bloke who describes most of his songs in terms of his mental health issues? If its the same bloke then I’ve seen him there before and it was a harrowing and unrewarding watch. Sorry I missed Carson McHone, ill health prevented me from attending.

Drinking on the bus for the cup semi should be fine as legal to drink at English football

Sorry to disappoint the jaikies but coaches there are governed by The Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol etc), Act, 1985, which specifically prohibits the carrying or consuming of alcohol on coaches travelling to or from designated sporting events, which includes all senior football matches

  7. Off to London this weekend with my wee boy (almost 4yo). We're staying in Greenwich and planning to spend a bit of time there - Cutty Sark and Maritime Museum planned. (Please god let there be a pirate for his sake!)

Does anybody have any experience of this part of London with young kids? A big playpark would be a bonus!

Apologies in advance if you're flying Edi to London about 8 on Friday morning. He's wired about flying and we've got days of excitement to be built!

You're also a short bus ride from the O2 Dome, and there's nearly always stuff on there. Charlton are at home on Saturday and they often have kids activities on in the Car Park, not sure what they've got lined up this week though. As said earlier Greenwich Market is great and the park leading up to the Observatory is huge.

"Meanwhile the manager continues to work at adding to the playing squad with the opening of the summer transfer window tomorrow (9th June) approaching"

  9. Ben Caplan at King Tuts tonight. First saw him there in January this year thanks to a tip from Fallen Angels afficionados and it remains my favourite gig of the year.

  10. I had all the grounds in Scotland prior to the addition of Ross County & ICT. Still to go to those 2 plus Annan, Falkirk & St Mirren new grounds and Annan. Down South I've been to The Valley (Charlton), Fulham, Barnet (Underhill and The Hive), Dagenham & Redbridge (match postponed [emoji23] ), Orient (for the beer festival, not football), Carlisle, Preston, Blackpool, Bury, Hartlepool, Blackpool, Brighton, Wigan, (new) Wembley, Dulwich Hamlet and Penzance

  11. Going to London this weekend for Stevie Wonder at Hyde Park on Sunday then The Low Anthem on Monday at The Borderline. Two of my favourite artists/bands ever so really looking forward to it.

Anyone know how good The Borderline is as a venue sound-wise etc?

It's fine - expect it'll be a sellout so getting a drink will be murder (and take you away from the stage), but there is a monitor to watch while waiting to be served. Will also be really hot, enjoy!

  12. I can't imagine they'll be playing too much off that one. It's a bit of a weepy. Maybe that's what they want. I would have thought they'd play most of Post to Wire, though.

Played Hallway, Williamette and Always on the Ride from Post to Wire tonight, most of the songs from the new album. Confirmed final Scottish gig at The Caves, Edinburgh on 18 October.

Four Walls was closer tonight, the archetypal RF tour song - Willy Vlautin, the outstanding lyricist of this generation finishes on a song that enables the rest of the band to demonstrate their undoubted talent, God I'll miss them

  13. Wolfmother tomorrow at the Academy then Sam Outlaw on Thursday, Basia Bulat on Friday and The Bellrays on Sunday.

Particularly looking forward to Sam Outlaw. His album is fantastic and I like the Admiral as a venue so it should be a great gig.

Thoroughly enjoyed Sam Outlaw on Thursday, great songs and "banter"
