I saw the Flaming Lips support Mercury Rev almost 25-years ago to the day (give or take a month). Mostly playing Soft Bulletin era stuff. That would be one I’d like to go back and see in my time machine.

Found this somewhat grouchy review of the occasion. His reservations about the venue are mainly fair, as my recollection is that after an initial burst of gigs once Potterrow had been extended (1998 ish) it was hardly ever used again for that purpose.

I do remember it was a very small crowd, but I went to a lot of gigs then and I could very well be mixing this up with another night at Potterrow.

I remember watching The Flaming Lips at the Bowlie Weekend just before they released "The Soft Bulletin" - what a gig. I saw them in Aberdeen supporting Mercury Rev, and again, they were amazing. Mercury Rev was horrendous, which wasn't helped by the fire alarm going off halfway through the gig, but I really liked their album "Deserter's Songs". I've got tickets for The Flaming Lips at the Usher Hall next May, celebrating 20 years of "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots".

Ratboys at the Rum Shack in Glasgow last night. Superb gig and enjoyable sets from support acts 'Former Champ' and 'Lande Hekt'.

Was impressed with Former Champ when i watched them last year at a gig in Edinburgh.

Tories have a notional majority of 2,399. National polling has the Tories down from about 25% to 15%, SNP down from about 45% to 30%, so the Tories should hold it. There aren't many votes to squeeze here, both Lib Dems and Labour got under 5% last time. There's a Reform candidate in the seat which should hurt the Tories more than anyone else, and no Green candidate.

Notional turnout was 64.2%; it may be that a good knock-up wins this seat.

Electoral Calculus predict Labour to get 27% of the vote here despite them not getting more than 15% in Banff & Buchan since 1970, yet people still use that site as a source.

Brexit was a significant issue in the last election, but subsequent developments may have shifted many opinions. Additionally, constituency boundaries have changed, likely to the advantage of the Tories.

  3. I'm really enjoying Beth Gibbons' album "Live Outgrown." She doesn't release music often, but when she does, it's incredible. I'm hoping Portishead will tour again, but in the meantime, I'm excited to see her perform at Usher Hall next week.

  4. Gaz Coombes playing Aberdeen on Saturday 2nd November at Cafe Drummonds.

Gig sold out in just over an hour. Surprised he is playing there than the lemon tree or the tunnels, I think Drummonds is a horrible venue for bands!

  5. Gigs in June:

    8th - Afterlands (Tunnels)
11th - Beth Gibbons (Usher Hall)
29th - Big City 2024 featuring Mogwai and various others (Queens Park Recreation Ground)
    30th - LCD Soundsystem (Barrowlands)

At the moment I'm thinking about drawing the cock and balls on the voting slip but I might be persuaded to vote for a candidate.

    Not Tory or Labour.

Pretty likely that Flynn will win here anyway.

I would say it’s more likely that the Tories will win if their votes hold up. In 2019, there were sexual misconduct allegations involving Thomson, which damaged the Tories.

I think Roos has suffered somewhat from the quality we've had in goal for some time now. Everyone would be hailing him as superb had he followed on from Langfield.

He's definitely got a mistake in him, but he's a pretty serviceable keeper, and certainly good enough for us. That said, if he wage demands aren't in line with his ability, we move on.

How is the young lad Ritchie doing?

Roos is proficient at stopping shots and excelling in one-on-one situations. However, his ability to catch crosses, his kicking, and his tendency to dive the wrong way during penalties can be frustrating.

I managed to get tickets for the 30th too. By the looks of it, all 3 nights seem to have almost sold out on Ticketmaster.

I believe it sold out all three nights in under two hours.

  10. I received four tickets via the UEFA app but am still awaiting the three for the Scotland game from the supporters club and one more that I ordered through UEFA.

  11. Adding into my gig on June (if Scotland don't qualify then):

30th June - LCD Soundsystem (Barrowlands)

They are playing 3 nights at the Barras starting on Sunday 30th June. Tickets just went on sale today

We don't have a team capable of finishing third.

Our defence is shite and has rode its luck against poor quality bottom half strikers.

We're also just about to lose our best midfielder on a free.

We have some good players but not all over.

My pre-season optimism hasn't lasted long.

Defence has improved since we began playing MacDonald and switched to a back four. We’ve just had five consecutive clean sheets in the league, which should have been six if not for a dreadful VAR decision.

Regarding other matters, losing Barron is a blow, but he has been inconsistent in certain matches and is not on the same level as Lewis Ferguson, although they are different types of players.

This season involved a massive rebuild due to the number of loan players, but next season should be a bit easier. We are also likely to lose Miovski in the summer, which is a bit of a blow.

We performed really well in all the cups, but with European games, we struggled in the league. It will be interesting to see if Hearts face the same issue as we did this season.

  13. Those BBC highlights are disgraceful. Aberdeen had a controversial third goal disallowed, but the BBC didn't show it – our manager mentioned it on RedTV. The same goes for Ross County hitting the bar; although it did show this when the pundits were discussing it.

I'm a bit disappointed not to have won that game. We started very slowly, but after ten minutes, it felt like we dominated until the sending off. After that, it was a matter of holding on to what we had.

The Aberdeen fans were amazing. Seeing us sell out a meaningless fixture was quite a surprise, and cheering the players for about ten minutes after the final whistle was fantastic. All in all, there are a lot of positives from this squad, and not much rebuilding needs to be done as we have a team capable of finishing third. If we had got rid of Robson sooner or not appointed Warnock, we might have qualified for Europe – all ifs and buts!

What a job Peter Leven has done, though. I'm not sure we will hold on to him for much longer.

    Another strong kit from Adidas.

£68 is a rip off (although par for the course for a football top these days, cheaper than any of the adidas international tops in fact).

The Scotland top was £75 or if you wanted the Euro 2024 badge it was £85.

Aye, second half was cracking. We hit the bar and post and had a couple of good chances plus the 3 goals. Some celebration from the lads for the winner!

One of the best Aberdeen Youth games, if not the very best, that I've attended. GIRU Celtic for time-wasting! I believe the U14s and U16s can win the league if they win their matches. The future is looking quite bright for us Dandies.

  15. Looking forward to the final match at Pittodrie and celebrating the U18s' league victory (what a game against Celtic!).

Leven has done an outstanding job, and if we hadn't had Warnock, we might have had a chance at finishing in the top six, but this season has been full of ifs and buts. I'd love to see some of the U18s get first team action tonight, but I'm not sure how many are left since players like Bavidge, Stewart, Marshall, and Hamilton went on loan to other clubs. Boyd only played 60 minutes on Monday night, so I expect him to get another 15 minutes tonight.

  16. Some Hibs supporters are discussing Malky Mackay's performance as the SFA performance director. He departed from that role over 3.5 years ago, and it's observed that there is the lowest number of young players breaking into first teams in the Premiership.

Caught F.O. Machete, Deadletter, Benefits, Fever,. Best bands for me were The Frowns and Girls Speak French at Danssa. Need to do more research for Tenement Trail in October.

Managed to see FO Machete, Automotion, The Plastic Youth, Deadletter, Soapbox, Trout, Fat Dog, and Anthony Szmierek. Unfortunately, a few acts cancelled, which I only found out upon arrival (better communication through updates on the scanned QR code would have helped). Two standout moments for me were Fat Dog's energetic performance and Anthony Szmierek's including fantastic cover of Happy Mondays and Sugababes songs. Dannsa was quiet when I attended, with hardly anyone there.
