No positives from relegation AFAIC for a diidy club like Saints the best we can hope for is a major Cup win and that can only happen if we're in the top flight - this season is a prime example 3/4 of the remaining clubs in the LC are diddy clubs but all from the top flight.

Seasons in the Championship are just wasting time since we won the Challenge Cup back in 05/06.

This is a good point. From about 2006 - 2014 , I'm pretty sure that we won less league games than any other team in Scotland (even East Stirling). Soul destroying season after season, except for a couple of crucial relegation games at Falkirk and Motherwell. Yet we got to two cup finals and won one of them in those years. We wouldn't have managed the latter without being in the top league.

  2. Although slightly off topic, it is worth noting that we didn't complain when we had to play three games without any of our recognised keepers earlier this season due to Covid. This includes one against Celtic that we only had to play at that time because it had been postponed from earlier, when one of their players decided that Covid rules didn't apply to them.

  3. I could never get my head around awarding the points to Motherwell and Hamilton. It was just "luck" that those were the fixtures arranged at the time. What if we'd been scheduled to play Killie? Would we each have been awarded a 3-0 defeat and a 3-0 victory? It is hard to predict the final outcome but whatever it is, it definitely shouldn't be to award the games to Motherwell and Hamilton.

It now sounds that there may me reasonable grounds to question whether either club have actually broken any rules.  In particular, where is the boundary between club responsibility and individual player responsibility. If we haven't, then no punishment. If we have, then we should be punished. The problem is deciding a reasonable punishment. It is just luck how many games have been postponed as a result. A fine (not suspended)? A fixed points deduction (2 or 3 points)? If the decision was to punish clubs who "broke" Covid rules, then the punishments should have been made clear from the outset.

I dont think Lex is wrong about the Danny Lennon side to be honest. They were a team that for me, were always less than the sum of their parts. Always capable of pulling huge performances and wins out the bag, but never capable of doing it consistently. Winning the cup was amazing, but it was just another example of a team that were good enough to rise to the occasion in big matches, without ever being able to put together a consistent run of form for run of the mill fixtures.

The cup run itself was perfect though. Can't imagine we'll ever repeat that. Knocking out Aberdeen, beating one of the OF 3-2.................

I was sitting texting my pal during the game calling Erwin and McAllister all the donkeys under the sun. Football has a funny habit of making you look quite stupid. Fair play to Goodwin as it couldn’t have worked out better.

JG said in his post match interview on SMTV that Erwin was one of the players badly affected by CoviD. That's several of our players now that seem to have been badly knocked by it.  We've not just been hit by docked games and self-isolating but also the virus itself. Maybe we haven't seen the best of Erwin yet as a result?

I dunno, after the events of the past year or so, there's a definite appeal about a St Mirren - Hibs final, too; not least because of the Ross factor, the links with Ross and Goodwin that go back to Alloa, the fact their squad is basically a St Mirren Old Boys Club... it'd be a great occasion if fans were allowed in.

That's not me counting my chickens, btw - you're clearly on a better trajectory now Holt's gone.

    It's basically, St Mirren 2018 v St Mirren 2021.

Or to put it another way, Hibs 2021 v Hibs 2024

I mentioned a few weeks ago I could see Bassey conceding penalties due to his tendency to day dream at times, let’s hope it’s not costly.

Relatively pleased with our overall play. We seemed well in control but then a combination of St Mirren using the ball better and us losing focus made it more of an even contest in the last 15 of the half.

    Fair summary, I think.

Delighted with the win. I think we sat too deep in the second half and invited too many chances, a better Motherwell side would have got something from that game. Erhahon was our best player by far in the second half, he was everywhere in midfield. McGrath was wasted playing so deep after a really good first half. The defence did very well, Shaughnessy in particular. Doyle-Hayes is a quality player.

Sorry to repeat myself but no idea why Erwin came on for Obika so early again, he provides zero threat and can barely even trap the ball. Again Durmus fell out of it when Obika went off after he'd had a great game. I would definitely bring Morias on or give Dennis another go ahead of Erwin.

I think Obika must have an issue to come off on the 60 min mark or earlier, two weeks running. Still recovering from Covid if he had it? Or a different injury? Surprised he doesn't go with Dennis though.

Absolutely love the idea that sitting with unearned points on the board might eat away at them.

It would eat away at me  if it was us.

I was checking the news regularly at the end of November, knowing a decision was imminent, with the fear that we were going to lose them. Now we've  lost them and we don't actually need them at the moment (if Covid ended the season tomorrow), I'm enjoying the nagging element of doubt in the 'well and, particularly, Hamilton camps, however small..

Yeah, I don't see how it benefits us in any way to get a points deduction. All that does (along with Livi's chances of wining at the weekend due to United's troubles) is create a "breakaway" at the bottom of the league.

I agree it would have been harsher on us. However, the thing I am not clear about is why Hamilton and Motherwell should selectively benefit out of this.

As Coventry Saint says, it is not that the matches had to be postponed that is the problem, it is that we didn't adhere to regulations. The two things are separate and any penalties should have reflected that.

  11. Up until a couple of weeks ago we've been gash. On the pitch, off the pitch and in the car going home.

Yet, if the season ended today due to some unforeseen pandemic, say, we'd still be above Hamilton and in touching distance of 9th.

We should be using all this to motivate everyone at the club for the remaining 24 league games and 2 cup competitions, particularly now we have a fully fit squad and we're starting to show some form.

This could be something like a supplier (stewards, catering, those who run corporate hospitality) paying people cash in hand with no expectation it's declared.

I still remember the "password" to get into Love Street for free  in the 70s - my grandad used to live on Love Street. Should I declare it now to avoid heavier penalties when the "forensic accountants" unearth it?
