  1. For me the episodic approach is best.  Each episode a different story all wrapped up by the end.  Maybe an underlying story arc but enough of a fix with one episode on its own.

One of the better Discovery episodes was with Harry Mudd and the time loop thing.  Can be enjoyed almost in isolation to all the other episodes.

By comparison one episode stretched into ten is like a badly chaired meeting that goes on longer than it should.  You wish weren't there.

Last year I did York and Toronto/New York and it was the first trips since 2019 so very much enjoyed it especially since the covid lockdowns.

Given that Toronto was originally called York, I think I can spot a theme here.

It was shit. A journalist called Zara McDermott did a recent one about the Idaho murders which was also shit and that was BBC as well.

I think you are waiting for them to get to you - a mysterious (or maybe not so mysterious) poster on P&B or so we thought but actually a criminal mastermind responsible for some greatest jewelry heists in Europe without anyone having any idea.

    Is that it?

  5. The documentary was formulaic.  An eccentric person shows up in Inverness.  Nobody knows where he is from.  Maybe they did but  that sounds boring.  A mysterious man from nowhere.  Maybe he drives a talking car.  Oops that's Knight Rider.

At the start, they explain how he was seen as a good guy.  Bit strange but good nonetheless.  Did lots of good things.  You get the idea.

.. but he had a dark side.  End of Act 1.  Cue the adverts.

Next bit describes how he deceived everyone.  Not a good guy after all.  Quelle surprise.

.. but then he disappears.  Oh no.  End of Act 2.

The hunt is on.  He tries to give them the slip but he is caught.  He is sentenced and goes to prison.  The end.

That should be enough to fill the time slot.  It is.

I can't believe I'm going to ask this, but how much effort did they put into designing aliens in Star Trek?

A better question would be how much expense did they go to.  Often the answer was as little as possible.  For several episodes of the original series, aliens looked just like humans but with silly costumes.  Even the pointed ears for Spock were expensive so episodes featuring Vulcans or Romulans had some wearing helmets so they didn't need the ears as well.  Then along came Star Wars which declared that aliens should look more alien hence later Star Trek had to do so as well.

With the original series, if they really wanted an alien-looking alien then they called in Janos Prohaska.

Is Berwick not in some sort of limbo state that means it's still at war with Russia or some shite?

When English teams were banned from playing in European competitions, UEFA did make an exception for Berwick Rangers.

Sadly they chose not to rise to the occasion.

    Don't know why

Special mention today for Rishi getting roasted on local bbc radio about laughing when asked when a GE is coming. He's a car crash in media and tory media bods know full well he'll be a disaster in GE.

"Honestly if I didn't laugh I would cry.  We are toast.  Currently reading a book about a Kamikaze pilot who survived the war.  Maybe that will give me idea about when to call an election."

Be careful for what you wish for. I don't want either tory or labour having a massive majority as they can do anything they want. I certainly don't wan't the tories to drop under 100 seats as it is a no brainer that reform and not the tories would win the 2029 election.

You are suggesting that Reform will replace the Tories.  Hardly seem different from today where the Tories have plenty of odious MPs who would not look out of place in the Reform Party.

Did this guy just rock up, play guitar badly and sell seashell earrings until he had enough money to buy land and a house?

    Odd.

I know people who play guitar extremely well but find it a challenge to make money from doing so.

I think they would be pissed off if they discovered playing as badly as Kim was the key to success.

Yea, I heard that last night, so if they hadn’t had an Officer near each end it could have been much worse. No gates or barriers to close, I’m just surprised there’s no reports of at least one driver ignoring the cops and driving past them.

That is precisely what happened with the Hobart Bridge Disaster.

The drivers who ended up with their front wheels over the edge ran back and tried to stop other drivers going further.  Two drivers swerved past them and merrily went on their way to oblivion.

  12. "We got a strange one here.  Some caller from Scotland who posts on a football forum wanted to know if it was true that Jimmy Carter narrowly avoided being on the bridge just before it collapsed.  Don't know what to say there.  Thought he was still down in Georgia.  What do you think Hank?"

Bananas in the fridge? They would never ripen!

Fun fact: Bananas can be used to ripen other fruit.  Put them all in a bag.  The bananas give off ethylene gas which will be trapped by the bag and help ripen the other fruit.

If Kim Jong Un and Putin turned up at his club championship he wouldn't look so clever. Best he'd manage is a 3 way tie with them all going round in 18.

Given that two of them have a known reputation for using poison, it would be interesting to see if there were any handshakes before that game got started.

Trump has hardly said anything about events in Gaza and I recently heard a good take for why that might be. The suggestion was that Trump likes these big swings of his balls when it comes to foreign policy. Like when he ordered the assassination of the Iranian general, Soleimani, by missile strike. Trump likes doing a major stand-alone event like that or he likes doing these stupid "deals" he attempts, like when he kept going to shake hands with Kim Jong-Un. Yet when it comes to Gaza, there's little scope for doing a stand-alone stunt or doing any sort of "deal" to try and clinch something. This is what Netanyahu has been waiting for all his life so he's not going to be doing deals with anyone. So Trump doesn't see any opportunity in Gaza for him to do a big swing of his balls and therefore he has little interest in it.

With the war in Ukraine, he might see an opportunity for one of his stupid "deals", he's certainly said as much. He likely thinks he can do his hand shakes with Putin and Zelensky or something. While the Republican party have been blocking the military aid to Ukraine, that's been without Trump. While he was president, he did begin arming Ukraine in 2017 where Obama had previously refused. Much has changed since then, though. If the majority of his party are now against providing more military aid to Ukraine, which they are, then he'll not go against that.

I totally agree with this.  Regardless of left or right, Trump is all about publicity stunts from one day to the next.

"Children are bring blown to hits in Gaza.  How can I turn this into a conversation about me?"

    "You can't."

"Okay.  Move on.  What else is going on?"

I think a lot of Joe Biden's appeal is not Biden himself but simply the idea of a president acting like a president as they all did before Trump came along.

Ah, well the answer's probably, "sure, but you might have problems if anything goes wrong". Maybe ask to have the limit reduced in case someone else gets access to your precious deets and you end up on the hook for silly money.

Presumably you'll be in the same country? That would definitely flag up with the provider!

Edit: I had to call my credit card provider once because I was in Glasgow and it "isn't somewhere we normally see you spending money"

Note to self:  BFTD never buys a round when he is in Glasgow.

Seriously? For those not old enough to remember, Thatcher's first term in office was an absolute fucking disaster: not quite up to the clusterfuck standards of the current government, but a lot worse than anything from then till 2019. Totally crashed the economy, and it was only the same level of foreign policy ineptitude getting us into an unnecessary conflict with Argentina over the Falklands that got her re-elected.

There was also the SDP.  Labour under Foot wanted to be democratic socialist while David Owen and others wanted to be Social Democrat.  Under FPTP, this split the anti-Tory vote and Thatcher strolled back in.

Also, I agree that fighting over the Falklands got the nostalgic patriotic vote.  A Union Jack still flies proudly over South Georgia even if nobody actually lives there.  Hooray.

    Who was Hitler before Hitler?

Presumably before the Thirties there must have been some b*****d used as a(n almost) universal bogeyman. Genghis Khan? Jack the Ripper? Granny Danger?

    Some short French guy.

    Name escapes me.
