    Some Normal Island nostalgia

"Well Mrs Lawrence. We would like to hear your opinion."

"My husband Phil just loved being a headmaster and all the people there.  The way he tried to rescue that pupil was just like him.  Honestly he was the bravest man I ever knew."

"Yes, yes.  I am sure that is all true.  Good old Phil.  Anyway the question we really want to know is 'Should Man United be in the cup?'"

The Tories trying to get racists to vote them whilst having a Hindu Prime Minister is one of the daftest political strategies I've seen.

It is not just racists.  A useful party photo opportunity has the Prime Minister being interviewed as they are coming out of church.  Some people find it re-assuring.  Thatcher, Blair and May could be relied on for this.  Not sure if there have been anything similar with Sunak coming out of a Hindu Temple but I could be wrong.

Part of this issue for the Tory party may be that the Labour party has swallowed up much of the ground previously occupied by the likes of Major, Patten or Clarke. The shift to the right by Labour - particularly under Starmer but started by Blair - has pushed the Tories further right to remain in some way relevant. Of course it leaves the electorate without a left or even centre-left option to vote for.

That is one way to look at it.  I still think the Tory Party is the natural home for Major, Patten, Clarke, Heseltine and so on.

I think Labour are being opportunistic.  Similar to why Vodafone and 02 have their stores next door to each other, Labour are man marking the Tories to scoop up anyone is just a sliver to the left of the Tories. Unfortunately that leads to the entire Overton window moving to the right and right-wing issues and positions dominating the headlines.

There's a really odd wee coterie of posters who express their dislike of this site regularly, yet continue posting, even opening up new accounts when punted.

Presumably they also have accounts on AVForums and Mumsnet (the #1 and #3 top matches for 'politics forum' on Google) where they do the same thing.

They also go on to Star Trek forums to say they prefer Star Wars.

I suspect, given the nature of this board, that both ‘toxic’ and ‘mainstream’ mean different things to us.

Not everyone sees the world through Patrick Harvie tinted specs.

I do indeed want the Tories to become less toxic and more mainstream, and support Reform’s policies in general.

If anyone has issues with the policies of Reform then I’d be interested to hear them, but I’m afraid screaming ‘RACISTS!’ just harms your cause.

When John Major speaks, I am perfectly happy to hear what he has to say.  I might not agree with him but I know he is capable of expressing his opinion without trying to provoke anyone.  Similarly Chris Patten, Michael Heseltine and many others.  I regard them as "mainstream" Tories who are genuinely trying to address the issues of the day albeit with Conservative solutions.

This is in stark contrast to the current garbage that are always provocative, trying to whip up the mob, blame "others" and divert attention away from themselves.  That is what I call "Toxic".

Not all Tories are toxic but a lot are.  The Reform Party is even worse.

Yes I would like to think so.

Although I never vote Tory, I accept that some people like small government, low taxes and other right wing ideas.  If the Tories were a typical mainstream right wing party, that would be one thing.

Unfortunately they have morphed into a populist hate filled isolationist anti-woke, culture wars dominated collection of charlatans that should never be in charge of anything.

Even so, I actually think CS approves of that and would like to see more of it.

The more high profile defections, the better.

This election is a write off for the Tories, who are also in a period of transition.

A successful Reform UK is required to keep up the pressure and steer them in the right direction.

If by this, you mean the Tories jettison their worst elements and become a less toxic and more mainstream party then maybe so.

However I suspect that is not what you mean.

Sad to say that the only state where slaves revolted and threw out their colonial rulers isn't proving a great example for fan ownership of football clubs.

Haiti would be in better shape if not for the horrendous treatment by other countries, especially France and the USA,

France allowed the revolt as long as they still got their money.  Haiti was forced to pay a staggering amount to France.

Also, Haiti was boycotted by other countries that still had slavery.  In the USA, slaves accounted for 57% of the population in South Carolina and Mississippi was similar.  The last thing they wanted was for Haiti to be a success.

The Gregorian reform of the calendar went into effect in 1582 and to correct the old Julian calendar, 10 days in October (fifth to fourteenth) were abolished.

Bulgaria only adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1917.

    Russia as well.

This meant the October Revolution actually took place in November.

Absolutely right. When living in Doha, I had a Rwandan taxi driver once and to initiate conversation I chimed in with, "How have things changed there since the war?" . The lad simply replied, "There's never been a war there, sir" and gave me a potted history to show what a fool I was.

He probably wrote about me on Rwandan fitba forum "Matoke & Urwagwa"

Rwanda had a genocide in 1994 and more than a million died.  That was followed by the First Congo War where Rwanda was very much involved.  That was followed by the Second Congo War which also saw Rwanda involved.

I think you should stop using Braverman Taxis.

Jimmy Carter falls ill during trip to Samoa.

Is that Samoa or American Samoa?

    I don't know.  American Samoa I guess.

    Are you sure?

No I am not.  Point is Thoughts and Prayers don't you agree?

Yes. No.  Sort of.  Look can you tell me is it Samoa or American Samoa.  I need to know.

Not going to tell you.  You are weird.

    Spoiler

Actually I just made this up.

Is it a normal thing to brush your teeth in the staff bathroom every day after lunch? Am I minging because I don't?

Depending on the answer, I may transfer to the Work Colleagues thread to rant.

Without question, it is most absolutely not a normal thing to brush your teeth in the staff bathroom after lunch.  Appalling dental hygiene.  Totally unacceptable and that is the end of the matter.

Brushing your teeth in the staff bathroom BEFORE lunch would definitely be better.
