  1. As for us, Motherwell (A), Dundee United (H) and St Johnstone (A) in our next three games to complete the first round of fixtures. Absolute minimum of 4 points required here or we'll be cut adrift already.

Unfortunately we have terrible records and Fir Park and McDiarmid and a team who don't seem to be able to create anything in the way of chances, so I'm pretty pessimistic about us taking much at all here.

Dundee United is a huge game, they seem to have just as many problems as we do at present. As is Motherwell, who while faring slightly better than us certainly could be dragged into it. I can't see us getting anything at McDiarmid though.

Lose all 3 and we'll need to seriously think about getting a new manager in.

  2. My concern about 3-5-2/5-3-2 is that pretty much all of our midfielders play the ball square almost all the time. Removing the player in behind the front, I suspect, will just leave an even bigger space between the midfield and the front-line.

That formation made sense when McCall was manager and we needed the defensive protection to make-up for having a geriatric defensive back-line, but the real reason we don't create chances is that our midfielders sit too deep. Our overwhelming threat since McNamara became manager has been wing-backs pelting and wingers cutting-inside.

If we were to go with the lineup nizzy has posted, then I'd imagine that one of Muirhead/Stevenson/Lawless would naturally sit deeper than Doolan/Pogba and could themselves act as the link.

Also think that sooner or later we'll need to give Gary Fraser game time, he's got the best range of passing at the club IMO and also the only centre midfielder who consistently looks to get it forward quickly. He has his shortcomings obviously, and he really needs to stop shooting from 40+ yards every single game he plays, but I think he's worth a shot.

Nevertheless, 3-5-2 or even a kind of 3-5-1-1 must be worth a go, since what we're doing at the moment clearly isn't working. I've not been to many games this season, but I haven't seen us create a proper chance yet which is absolutely depressing in the extreme.

  3. No one mentioned chopping and changing the squad on a regular basis. We are now significantly weaker in both central defence and attack. This to me seems self evident. It also seems fairly clear that our immediate competitors within the bottom six have strengthened their squads.Might not be following the party line and things may change with new additions but to me the manager is being hung out to dry by the current board.

With everyone fit from last season, I'd have said our best central defensive partnership was probably Seaborne and Frans. We still have both of them. If you take Lindsay as being good enough for 3rd choice (which he is, IMO) then I don't think we're particularly weaker in central defence. We've lost Taylor, but that was always likely to happen and we're yet to see who will replace him with 2 weeks or so left until the start of the season, so it's still very possible that we could have a central attack that is on par with what we had last season.

If you add in that we've improved our keeper, Gary Miller looks to be signing, who while not as good as SOD was is still very much competent at this level, and we've also brought in Amoo who looks to be a good player and Welsh coming back (hopefully) strengthens our midfield options then I don't really think we're particularly weaker than at the end of last season at all. Of our best performing players from last season IMO, only SOD has left and it seems we're getting as good a replacement as you could realistically hope for.

Still 2 weeks to go but if we can get a couple of players in then we should be set for a decent season.

  4. Is Leyden not a midfielder now? I never see the development squad but that seems to be the story from reports. The lesser-spotted Chris Duggan would probably be our 2nd choice striker (tho in reality Stevo would play there before him).

Miller's decent enough, not as good as SOD but would do a job. I'd hope we sign him rather than him being this year's Darren Barr and leaving us scrabbling for a RB or shoving Christie in there .

I’ve said earlier, my concern isn’t squad depth as such because I’ve no issue with guys like Lindsay, Hendry, and Wilson replacing Balatoni, BRE, and Craigen.

My concern is that we lost 4 guys who were first picks from the first XI, we’ve replaced 2 of them- Cerny an improvement and Amoo looks to be someone we targeted and got which makes me reasonably optimistic about him, Miller looks like being 3, which leaves us with a striker to get. I’d rather it was someone with pace, if we want an immobile target man who is quite good in the air and with the ball at his feet then we can use Stevenson, but it’s obviously not his best role.

You're correct, a quick google suggests Leyden started off as a striker but no appears to play mainly in central midfield. Also went on loan to East Fife which I had totally missed so I guess he'll have played some senior football before which is more than I thought.

Duggan is a worry as well, he seems to get injured almost as much as Sean Welsh does. I would have thought this season will be his last chance to prove he has what it takes for us.

  5. I'll be absolutely amazed if we don't sign Miller, given he's quite obviously good enough for the league and I would hope that Archie is already in talks with him.

That would leave a striker being the main priority, as a good but unspectacular Doolan, a completely untested at this level Leyden and an out of position Stevenson simply isn't good enough.

That plus a couple of squad players (basically cover for full backs or attacking midfield) and we'd be more or less set.

  6. Take the piss all you want. It's kind of sad the aggression jags fans have on this board for no real reason other than maybe my make believe pals thinks it's cool. It would be good to see some decent debate and discussion but it looks like most of you don't have that capacity and want to keep your little clique of sh*tey banter. You've no idea who I am and who I know at the club or within Scottish football. I'm telling you what I know and giving my opinion based on that. Isn't that what forums are for?

Hide behind anonymity and cowardly mockery all you want. I think the board and Archie are doing a very good job and have very little resource. To finish 8th in Scotland is a very impressive and it's about The best we can achieve as a club at this moment. It's also a fact Scott Fox was offered 2k a week plus add ons and perks up at Ross County and we weren't going to match it. I also told you all Taylor wouldn't sign weeks ago and I was correct on that. So maybe I do know what I am talking about.

Wake up and smell the coffee folks. We all support the same team and want the same end result.

Are you not the boy who believed the Kenny Miller story not long ago?

  7. Ambition is to keep the club alive and in stable condition in a climate where there is actually less and less money available to clubs year on year. The club (headed by Maxwell) needs to work extremely hard to bring in revenue sources and keep them. I don't see why you all think a few extra grand means we can sign mediocrity like Lyle Taylor for 2k a week or keep Higgy or Fox.

Fact is we lost Scott Fox after Archie offered him an improved deal because Ross County gave him a better deal. Yes...Ross County! My sources said 2k a week and a house. Explain that one? Don't see how they can achieve that strategy long term but If that's their way then so be it.

I hate to offend many of you but you live in cloud coo-coo land if you think we as a club can compete with those around us and not get into financial difficulties. The long term goal of the club is to setup a view to the youth academy which will provide players and a club that works to the benefit of our community. No matter what division we play as we will not and cannot offer long term deals worth 2k or more a week.

I'd rather have Thistle in league 2 and stable than a club teetering on administration in the premiership because "the fans" wanted to see the players they wanted at the club.

We all know Archie has done very well with the resources he has available. He'll bring in 3-4 youngsters this coming season as he has no choice. We will continue to fight against relegation but maybe just maybe they surprise us and this academy takes off and we are a solid model for other clubs to follow.

You don't have any sources, shut up with your fantasist pish.

  8. Is that the boy that thought Aaron Muirhead was one of the best Thistle centre half's of all time? Cretin of the highest order.

Kevin McCann (RB) Livingston - Very solid defensively and likes to get forward whenever possible, can put a good cross into the box and is very composed on the ball. Formerly of Hibs, Morton and ICT (loan)

Steven McDougall (ST/W) Dumbarton - More of an Inside forward, blessed with a lot of ability, very good technically and would be a very useful impact sub. Should be playing for a bigger club than Dumbarton IMO. Previously of Dunfermline and Airdrie.

Burton O'Brien (CM) Livingston- Was MOTM against Thistle at Almondvale recently, lost his pace but still a player with great vision to pick out a pass and experience at a higher level with Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship where he was a first team regular.

    Ooft.
