Over the full course of both clubs histories Dundee have been on top for longer by every measure.

We are in the midst of a slight blip where Utd have been on top for a brief (in club history terms) spell.

The reality is both clubs are extremely similarly sized overall - as reflected in almost every measure apart from employment of sex offenders where Utd are ahead and should hopefully remain there.

Leigh Griffiths has entered the chat.

    Spoiler

I know he was never charged with anything, but just getting in before the rest do.

"Never heard of him" is likely to be the top answer.

It must be incredibly depressing for people who climb to the top of their field, only to realise that the vast majority of people will never know who they are because their sport isn't one of the cool ones.

(although the strongman stuff is very cool if I ever catch it on the telly, but I couldn't tell you a single name involved except for Geoff Capes)

Here he is standing next to some small chap...

I would recognize it but it doesn’t really register with me. Neither do the Scottish Cup wins in the 20s. Luckily for me if this is an argument over who is a bigger club (Kilmarnock or Ayr) then I would I only need to refer back to our most recent success to beat the diddy club tally from down the road.

I thought this discussion was about the size of Dundee compared to Utd.

How old were you when Dundee last won something meaningful? How many trophies have Dundee Utd won in your lifetime since the last time you saw Dundee win a major trophy?

It was initially to do with comparing success of Dundee and United. Kilmarnock are level with both on that front. But some diddy Morten fan derailed it to 'bigger'.

If I told you I was 115 would you believe me? I'm 43 and, apart from a few Championships, I've never seen Dundee win anything. Although there are others on here like @Eednud and @Wee jeemie who did see the top league win. Just because I didn't witness it, doesn't mean it didn't happen.

More recently successful would be my one.

I can’t be bothered going to check the major trophies won but it’s like saying Queens Park are a huge club because they won a number of Scottish Cups back in the day.

Dundee have pretty much been a joke club for my entire period watching Scottish football (1993-now).

Sure, why don't we use the last 10 years?

Oh because Kilmarnock have won absolutely nothing in that time period.

It's all selective to suit narrative.

Agree with you here. Dundee might be the bigger club to pensioners but it’s been 50 years since they’ve won anything, so realistically you’d have to around 60 to even remember a cup win. They’ve spent most of the last two decades in the Championship/First Division & have a smaller fanbase nowadays than United as well (United have a higher average attendance despite being in a lower tier this season). In my lifetime Dundee United have always been a pretty solid team, winning trophies, reaching cup finals, playing in Europe etc.

Perhaps historically Dundee were bigger, but it’s not the case anymore. It’s like arguing Queens Park are one of the biggest clubs in Scotland because they won loads of trophies outwith most people’s living memory.

Ah the Perth chat with time limits.

So it depends your age on how you determine how big a club are? Gotcha.

"They’ve spent most of the last two decades in the Championship/First Division"

I understand you want to have a pop with it being your big derby week, but stop telling lies min.

I'll get about an hour until the stomach pain starts then a two or three hour period of gradually getting worse then it's emptying time. Usually right as rain about an hour after that. Apart from last Friday, felt like a wringed out sponge.

Growing old is terrible. I'm not even 40 and groan every time I move. My hands were like ice blocks doing up two ratchet straps in the rain yesterday and I'm just back from a 20 minute walk and my feet are fucking freezing.

Plus, my body is starting to reject certain foods. Fair enough, they're not healthy but they're quick and easy. Stop moaning about packaged meatbaws.

It's when you start moaning about how cold it is, is when your body starts to become old......oh.

United have won the Scottish cup twice in living memory, they've been in a European cup final and won the Scottish League, they've made more money than outgoing transfers and have a slightly higher average match-day attendance.

As I'm sure most United supporters will happily tell you they've also got a 100% undefeated record against a certain Spanish superclub.

Without calling in an expert on Dundonian football history I'm just cherry picking facts here but it's hard to find an argument that Dundee FC can better that. Even Lee Wilkie bailed for the tangerine half.

Dundee have exactly the same amount of major honours as United, including the top league as you point out. Therefore are not more successful than us.

Two of your reasons is that they have made more money in out going transfer and have a slightly higher match day attendance? Fairly clutching there chief. With Dens highest attendance being 43,000 and Tannadump's being 28,000, that probably evens your flying Unicorn stats out.

Who hasn't beaten Barca? In fact Dundee were the first club from outside Spain to beat both Barcelona and Real Madrid at their home grounds. We have also got a perfect home record against AC Milan, but they are shite of course.

"I'm just cherry picking facts here but it's hard to find an argument that Dundee FC can better that."

We have won 344 more league games than United. But I won't use this fact as I see as as pretty equal over history, as these records will never change or have a time limit on.
