  1. One of my pals was at the Threave Rovers game last weekend and got talking to some old boy who was asking a few questions. Seemingly the old boy was there to complete visiting every ground in the WOSFL. He can't drive and used public transport to every game. Now that is a few random games.

Cant remember but didnt Dalbeattie also get a good result against a weak Celtic team that nearly stopped them being relegated last year.

Yes, Dalbeattie Star drew with Celtic B and Hearts B in the last month of last season. To be honest i don't know or care enough about Celtic/Hearts to know if they played weakened teams. The Celtic game was a wet, cold, windy night and the young boys didn't fancy it!

The League clubs voted the B teams, surely they must have thought the B teams might use "squad rotation", it's only a training exercise for them.

Anyway back to Gretnafc2008, seems they have signed a couple of ex threave players, and had one as a trialist, maybe signing localish players with previous Lowland League experience has led to an upturn in form. Well done them if it has

Cheers, I was wondering about that as was told at Lochar game that they are playing league games at the NWCC too. Hopefully folk will be able to go along and support both teams during the campaign. Really looking forward to watching the boys progression against some top sides.

It was just word of mouth i'd heard it had been changed and i tend not to believe anything unless i'ts written down.

NWCC, at least at Meadow you can get a seat, shelter and a cup of tea on a cold winter's night. Fancied going a long to couple of the Threave games but we'll have to see

The U20 boys from Lochar Thistle & Threave Rovers begin their campaign in the inaugural WOSFL Development League this Friday.

Both are in Conference A and start off with a home game. Will post details and how the conferences work in a later post.

Hope to see some right good games as our 2 entrants pit themselves against some of the best youngsters in the country.

I am just a product of my upbringing. I am very competitive and any sport I took part in always strived for improvement. (Not saying I was any good).

I do get annoyed, probably shouldn't, at the attitude around that we are only the SOSFL and as nice as the Scottish and the SRCC are as a wee distraction, we are content playing away in our own wee bubble down here. If that's what the SOSFL want then drop out of the pyramid and become a wee standalone league.

Personally, I don't witness or hear that at the games I've been at around Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire.

Not been to Star much to say but at NS and Creetown see two clubs that want to progress and move forward. Saints and W&B are at a different stage in their development.

There is another local club who have taken the bull by the horns who fully expected to be in Round 1 tonight. The whole demeanour and attitude at Meadow Park is of a club growing and wanting to be a positive component in the pyramid.

I have an understanding and knowledge of all the league's in our pyramid.  Am I expecting too much from our clubs. I don't think so.

I've seen ex boys clubs and ammies with no backing enter the pyramid and grow year on year with ambitions and expectations. Surely It's not wrong to want the same for some of our well established clubs.

A SOSFL team, Dalbeattie Star, won a game in the Scottish Cup, can you not just say well done!

Instead it's all about , previous performances and other clubs future ambitions.

As for belittling the clubs supporters for wanting to say well done on fb!!!! oh dear!!!! Jesus wept

Have left Star for last. 1st Round proper as they say  beckons and will find out later their next opposition. Have been following their FB page and cannot understand the back clapping and general hysteria at scrapping past a club from the 10th tier of the pyramid in extra time and, after playing against 10 men for a majority of the game. This following on from their exit from the SRCC earlier against a Tier 8 club. Is this really the level of ambition our league's senior club has. To have come from Tier 5 and struggling against Tier 8 & 10 clubs would be getting the 'hairdryer' treatment from me at team meetings.

Is this the level we in the SOSFL are happy for our clubs to be at. I'm more impressed by the reaction from NS and Creetown, hopefully they will use the 'anger' from yesterday to better themselves.

I realise I am not a traditional south fan, but believe me I want to see the south clubs flourish and be a positive contributor in the pyramid.

Really, it's the Scottish Cup, a win's a win, some people are maybe happy about that.  A lot of folk just support and wish there local team well. Maybe they don't understand the pyramid or tiers or historically how good Carluke are, or how it was there first ever Scottish Cup game.  Talking to some at Carluke and couple of questions i was asked were what league are Dalbeattie in? whats the south league? why did they leave the Lowland league?  Bit of pyramid  education maybe needed. Strangely enough i haven't seen any back clapping or general hysteria from any one who was actually at the game.

Star were terrible, the game was terrible, the pitch is horrible and it's a long walk to the nearest pub. Carluke should hold there heads high, took a 2 goal lead through a brilliant 20 yarder and a bad Star blunder then went down to 10 men but never gave up, fought for everything, they even missed a penalty.  Would have had no Qualms had Carluke won.

    Star won, Yipee

🤣🤣  Think the moaning's and arguments etc.. about SOSFL teams at tier 6 is not really anything to go by the Scottish Cup results but does give fans a gauge.  Think its more regarding a full season in the league.  One off cup ties cannot be  a gauge but for fans but as of a boasting.  The level of the SOSFL is lower than both premiers of the EOSFL and WOSFL meaning I believe as I've watched a number of SOSFL teams in past couple of years if they were in either premier league there is no doubt they would finish bottom.
Carluke, I've been informed last week, are weaker than last year but I cannot confirm. I watched them last year and lets say I wasn't impressive.  Whether Carluke win or are beaten, its not a gauge for the level between WOSFL and SOSFL teams but I will say, if Carluke win, this is a seriously embarrassing result for Dalbeattie.    I do think Dalbeattie will win but football is football and you never know with one off cup games.

Looking at Carluke's results this season so far, 3 wins against the bottom 3 teams in the WOS league 4, i'm very hopeful of a Star victory.  The other SOS teams all have home advantage so hoping Creetown and Newton Stewart make a decent fist of it, Saints seem to have lost there way this season and Wigtown have no chance.

Correct, one off Scottish Cup or Challenge Cup games are no gauge, you can only beat what's put in front of you doesn't matter if it's tier 6 or 26. The level of the SOSFL tier 6 isn't as high as other leagues but at the end of the day, except the end of season play off,  it doesn't really have affect on the pyramid.

If Dalbeattie don't beat Carluke I'm going to live in that cave east of here along the 75 that Big Brucey supposedly had his spider moment.

Remember last season? Royal Albert beat Creetown in the South Challenge Cup, could be a Spider in a cave come Saturday night.

Great weight of expectation on Dalbeattie's shoulders, Everybody outwith a 5 mile radius of Islecroft will be looking for a Carluke victory, can see it already, SOSFL shouldn't be tier 6, abolish the League and merge with the WOS, Lowland League must be rubbish if Star were in it for 10 years, pyramid is all wrong, blah blah blah, yawn yawn yawn'

    OOOh ahh up the Star

I'd love to have a look in the old pavilion and see the state of it now.  Many a gid night in there in my youth

Looked like the front door was boarded up, didn't look to see if there was a back door. The gates into the pitch are also padlocked. Who owns it or has the key?  I'm sure if it was in a more urban area it would have been stripped,  covered in graffiti and burned down by now.

Like everything in life there isn't a solution that suits all, sometimes a work around is required.

Very true. Away back in the day when you finished Youth football, if you were really good you went to an SOS team, if not you could play Saturday Amateur or Sunday League. At 16 that toughened you up.  You quite often done what was easiest without a car or driving licence, plus the rules were different then, you could sign for 2 teams and play saturday and sunday. People develop at a different rate, eventually everybody found there own level.

Now the Saturday amateurs, Stewartry and Wigtownshire sunday leagues are gone, At one time these would of consisted of 30 plus teams, with a lot of teenage boys wanting to make a step up. Hopefully these u20 teams will fill that gap. If i was 16 now i would probably buy a set of golf clubs

I was at Islecroft tonite and was wondering why Star don't have a 20's team in the this setup. Surely it would reap it's own rewards.

The word is that Threave have struggled to get a let for Friday night anywhere, been told they have tried all  floodlit astris from KBT to Dumfries but no joy.

Like everything else today, running an U'20's team would not be cheap, transport, Ref costs, possible pitch hire and as you say Threave are struggling to get a pitch hire. Limited player availability, work, leaving area for study or employment plus that age might be hormonal for some of them ( drink and women/men). Annan withdrew, Mids have been in it but no longer. Maybe you should have asked a Star official last night!

just out of interest how many Astros are there in the area?  2 in the Stewartry, 2 in Wigtownshire, Lockerbie, Annan,  3 in Dfs ( does St. Joe's fit the criteria? King George?)

  12. Friday night games so floodlights needed. I see some of the teams in the league just seem to play at High School or Sport centre astros. Good luck to Threave if they are using Meadow.

Remember back in time when it was the BP Youth Cup all the local SFA members teams entered a team, Dalbeattie played Glasgow Rangers at Dalbeattie on a cold December day if i remember correctly

For transparency we don't know too much about the South Of Scotland but are always trying to learn and take a lot from here and twitter. We appreciate any feedback etc to improve

Quite a fair and balanced piece, Well done. Best advice; get yourselves down to a couple of games, some midweek games coming up, make yourselves known, people will be glad to talk to you and promote the league.

Longer cause of all the damn tractors. Here's a saddo fact Dumfries is closer to Glasgow than it is to Stranraer by a couple miles.

They have obviously never tried to travel the length of the A75 or entered D&G via the A76 or A77. Fecking nightmare.

A lass i see at my work teenage son has signed for Wigtown, he is looking forward to Auchinleck's visit, more than probable that he might move away from the region for work or further education, might be the biggest match he might ever play in. Even in the earlier rounds, that's the magic of the cup!
