That's what I mean though. Motherwell/St Johnstone/Killie might get double the crowd for a game against Rangers or Celtic, but that's because of the away fans. The number of home fans we get can double or halve from week to week. I can't think of another club where that happens (maybe Celtic under Deila).

Ah yeah, just saw you said home fans. If anything, most clubs get fewer home fans than normal when they play Celtic (will probably be the same against rangers when the novelty of the circus wears off). Even used to be the case with us to some extent.

I've been thinking about that. Are there any other teams whose crowds fluctuate as wildly over a league season? We can get 18,000 home fans for games against Celtic/Rangers on a Saturday, and then 9,000 against Hamilton/Ross County a week later. That's a huge variation.

Pretty much every other team in the league (apart from Hearts), but that's because they whore out their grounds to the bigots, not because more of their own fans are turning out.

  3. I think attendances will go up when Aberdeen first move to their new ground. But the key is keeping the attendances up. Of course having a great football team with fan favourites is important, but the club have got to think of other ways. I think they could really learn from the US and Oz. Soccer games over there are like a mini carnival. They have lots of family orientated activities going on like penalty shoot outs for prizes, selling food and merchandise, music and more. I think it's pretty good.

Solid transport links also cannot be stressed enough. There has to be shuttle buses and they have to be reliable. Grounds I've been to abroad have rail links which are super fast. The club should be running buses and the local council should also be putting buses on. It's not difficult yet in Scotland we seem to utterly fail at providing apt transport options for football.

There's a pretty detailed transport plan on the planning application. The club will be running 20+ shuttle buses from park and ride sights and the city centre for run of the mill league games and even more for when bigger crowds are anticipated. There's space for 100 private coaches as well (including away fans) and they're going to increase the number of service buses on match days, alter the route slightly and create a new stop for the ground. A railway station would be the icing on the cake but I don't see it happening.

The plans also include a supporters bar, cafe, bigger club shop and ticket office, museum, memorial garden and a outdoor "fan zone" (not sure what that'll involve exactly). I'd imagine they'll ramp up the offering for kids and families too with better facilities.

The planning application on the council website is worth a look for a fellow stadium nerd (and Dons man) such as yourself. A lot to sift through but some interesting stuff on there.
  4. Guess it's only a matter of time before we get the whole "Abergreen" shite again. Mind you, Celtic loaning out players to rivals of The Rangers is funny as f*ck.

Also people are saying we shouldn't be developing Celtic youngsters ahead of our own: Christie is streets ahead of any of our young players. He's not guaranteed a start every week for us but he's a good player.

  5. Proposed stadium looks good but the stands don't look very steep. Worry that it will feel far away from the action with the slope being that shallow. Would be a huge missed opportunity to build a new stadium and not have seats close to the pitch.

They made the stands more shallow to appease the WANKS' arguments about it dominating the Westhill landscape.

They've also saved a bit of money by exactly copying Bristol City's new stand.

  6. Definitely a lot of box ticking, I said to the missus at one point it was like an LGBT meeting on the stage with Daley, Balding and Ian Thorpe, then had to explain to her that the hockey captain is married to her team mate.

Daley was there as he's an Olympic medalist and one of the most famous British sportspeople around. Balding has presented sport for the BBC for over 20 years. Thorpe is a 5-time Olympic Gold medalist and is one of few people to have beaten Phelps at an Olympic final. Richardson-Welsh has competed at 3 Olympic Games and captained her side to the gold medal against the odds in her last game. To say any of them are only there because of their sexuality is nonsense.

  7. Drinking at the stadium all day is a shite plan. Away days are meant to be spent in the town, it's part of the away day experience - drinking in different boozers, chatting with locals, seeing the sights. You won't catch me coming out to your fans bar in the middle of a farmland with your overpriced lager.

Dons fans are excited because this is new and refreshing. Yes the plans look impressive when set out and the pictures look good. But if you can see past that it's just glorified pish. I hope you prove me wrong and it's a huge success but I'm not convinced.

It'd hardly be an away day for a Dons man like yourself.
  8. Having the bar open for hours before and after the game is a win-win. It means those who like having a few beers on matchday will be giving their cash to the club and also helps the transport situation as not everyone will be trying to get on a bus at the same time. They could also make buses free before 1pm and after 6pm (for example). It'd lower the number of people queuing for transport at peak times and they'd make the money back several times over in food and drink sales.

  9. It won't have 4 similar stands. Main stand will be different. The steepness of the other 3 sides is what gives it that bit of character.

I don't know if you've been to ER but they've done a great job with the new stand. Been in it and the guys head infront of you when standing up is at your knees near enough. Very steep. 2 awkward looking stands behind the goals and then the main one, also different.

Tbf previous poster is correct it is a very basic photo and I suppose even Hibs and Hearts stadiums would maybe look similar if one of them was done.

Just feel like there's a lot of potential here to start from scratch and create something unique. Pittodrie is a cracking ground and it would be sad to see it replaced with a square bowl

From what I've seen, the new Hearts stand looks incredibly similar to the rest of the ground. A very basic photo again though. fcbbda77b0a68d34bdc2f4ae86235c12.jpg

I've been to Easter Road several times and I agree they've done a very good job with their new stand. I'd say it's probably the best stadium in Scotland in a lot of ways. Used to have a good atmosphere when they had section 43 but not sure what it's like now.

It's too early to form any kind of opinion when they've only shown half of the stadium. We won't really know what it'll be like until the full proposal is released tomorrow so all this SoullessLegoBowl talk is premature imo. Can't really see anything wrong with the two pictures they've released today either.
  10. It looks so fucking shite. Zero character.

Why not even just make the stands different sizes or something simple like that? Copy a Tynecastle design or a Hibs design? Similar sizes. Been to both. Both fairly simple but both got a bit of character about them especially Tynecastle.

Well we've absolutely nailed the different sized stands aspect at Pittodrie. No point in moving now.

Will Tynecastle lose its character when it has 4 similar stands next season?

  11. Doesn't look too bad really, but always a risk moving out of town.
I haven't been following this topic, but why do Aberdeen have to leave/not develop Pittodrie?

Pittodrie is costing us a lot to maintain and there's very little space to re-develop 3 of the 4 stands on the same footprint without significantly reducing the capacity.

The club missed the boat in terms of acquiring land around the ground so this is probably our only option. The money from the sale of Pittodrie is also a major factor and I think we'd struggle to fund replacing three stands in a short space of time.
