I just saw The Cure at the Mercedes Benz Arena in Berlin.

Twilight sad  were the support act, and they were astonishingly pish. Most of their songs were instantly forgettable, apart from one that had a chorus that went something like "fucking someone won't keep you warm at night". I nearly cringed myself inside out when I heard that. It was the most embarrassing lyric that I have ever heard.

The Cure were immense though. They must have played for the best part of three hours. They did every tune from Disintegration along with a selection  of their various chart hits.

Robert Smith must be drawing a pension by now, but he still has it.

    This made me laugh.

Glad The Cure were good too, though. The stuff I've read about this tour has been overwhelmingly positive, and the setlists have all been unreal. Cannot fucking wait for them (and The Twilight Sad) at the Hydro soon-ish.

Craig Finn and Lee Bains - the latter by a mile - will be atop my year end.  I’m not quite as into The Beths as a lot of folk I know, but their new one is pretty great in places.

I'm a big Beths fan, and don't think the newest one comes close to the others. There are still 3 or 4 really great tunes on there though.

  3. Been a while since I've been on here. Best 10 this year for me so far are:

    1. Yard Act - The Overload

    2. Wet Leg - Wet Leg

    3. Craig Finn - A Legacy Of Rentals

    4. Gentle Sinners - These Actions Cannot Be Undone

    5. Kathryn Joseph - For You Who Are The Wronged

    6. Gang Of Youths - Angel In Realtime

    7. Katy J Pearson - Sound Of The Morning

    8. Just Mustard - Heart Under

    9. Rina Sawayama - Hold The Girl

    10. Lee Bains & The Glory Fires - Old-Time Folks

All aboard the hype train for my top 2. The "new" 1990s album would be in the top 5 but it was recorded 10 years ago, so I suppose technically doesn't count. Honourable mentions for Joe Purdy, Danger Mouse & Black Thought and, very surprisingly, Paolo Nutini - if it wasn't about 3 or 4 songs too long, it would comfortably be in my top 10.

Is anyone still waiting on/expecting gigs to be rearranged? I need to put in holidays for work and The Twilight Sad at the Barrowlands is apparently still happening at the end of May. I doubt it. @GrahamJags you know anything?

Sorry, I've not been on here for a while - assuming you've now seen they've been postponed indefinitely (but not cancelled)?

  5. Enough albums listened to for a Top 10 of stuff I've enjoyed

    1. The Hold Steady - Open Door Policy

    2. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - New Fragility

    3. Nick Cave & Warren Ellis - Carnage

    4. Mogwai - As The Love Continues

    5. Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound

    6. Cool Ghouls - At George's Zoo

    7. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - L. W.

    8. Arab Strap - As Days Get Dark

    9. Julien Baker - Little Oblivions

    10. The Weather Station - Ignorance

The new Middle Kids album released tomorrow promises to be very good based on the singles.

  6. Think it's safe to concede at this early stage that indoor gigs will not happen for the rest of 2021. Increasingly unlikely that there's much chance of outdoor events happening either.

  7. The new Clap Your Hands Say Yeah record is fantastic. Where They Perform Miracles is one of the best songs I've heard in ages. Psychedelic Porn Crumpets' (terrible name, great band) new one is excellent as well.

Judging by their live show broadcast on Saturday night, the new Mogwai is going to be very good. Cannot wait for the new Hold Steady on Friday as well. The singles have been great.

  8. Unlike others on here, I listened to more new music in 2020 than any other year, and was impressed at how many albums I loved were released. The only pisser was that I couldn't get to see many/any of them live. Whittling to a top 10 was difficult, but ended up with:

    1. Courtney Marie Andrews - Old Flowers

    2. Bruce Springsteen - Letter To You

    3. Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher

    4. Pottery - Welcome To Bobby's Motel

    5. Bob Dylan - Rough & Rowdy Ways

    6. Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia

    7. Daniel Romano - How Ill Thy World Is Ordered

    8. Cut Worms - Nobody Lives Here Anymore

    9. Fleet Foxes - Shore

    10. Perfume Genius - Set My Heart On Fire Immediately

Special shout out to Daniel Romano who released umpteen albums last year, the majority of which were excellent. Disappointment of the year was the Tame Impala record, which I couldn't get into at all.

  9. Wasn’t bothered about her until I listened to Future Nostalgia, which is easily one of the best albums I’ve heard this year. Banger central. Hallucinate in particular is unreal.

  10. New one from Cut Worms is out.  It’s called Nobody Lives Here Anymore.  Take a touch of John Lennon vocals, a dose of Gene Clark instruments and a handful of Buddy Holly hooks, and you’ve got some toe-tappingly charming fluff, with nary an original note anywhere to be found.  It comes in at well over an hour, though.  Enough of that, Cut Worms.

Adored Cut Worms since I first saw him supporting Marlon Williams at Tuts a few years back. His vocal is a dead ringer for George Harrison to my ears.
  11. Not really sure where people are getting that we’ve looked good going forward in pre-season/the league cup. Created a bunch of chances against St Mirren but didn’t take them, created very little against Queens Park, and didn’t take the few chances we made against QOTS. Scored 3 goals in 3 games from open play, but the way some people on here are going on about it is like we’ve been scoring goals for fun.

  12. Didn’t see all of the game, and missed both the sending off and Docherty incident, but it’s pleasing to hear that we’ve got some players who aren’t the soft shitebags that we’ve been riddled with for the last few years.

Obviously Graham’s red tonight sounds daft and needs to cut that out, but he’s definitely a handful for defenders and will score for fun in the league. I very much like the look of Docherty based on the league cup games I’ve seen him in and he’ll be massively important this season.

  13. Michael Max putting in a bid for the Thistle Tom Miller role. Constant penalty shouts and getting info about the opposition and other teams wrong. Might start warming to the c**t if oppo fans begin moaning about him tbh.

Can’t recall any penalty shouts from him, but his total hard-on for Ciaran McKenna after one competitive game is cringeworthy.
  14. Thought we were very good tonight. 4-1 probably flattered Saints, but it doesn’t help when our defence and keeper implode completely. By and large though, I thought we played some good stuff and caused a fair few problems to a team two leagues higher and with more competitive games under their belts.

Rhys Breen won’t be up against many better players than Obika in the league, but he’ll need to get up to speed quickly as he couldn’t deal with him. Brownlie had a decent first half, but wasn’t up to much in the second. Thought Shea Gordon was atrocious though. Lost the ball countless times in the middle of the park with simple passes and it was his man for the first St Mirren goal.

Very impressed with Docherty and Murray looks like he’ll be very dangerous against lesser opposition. Brian Graham was excellent and will score goals for fun in League 1. Play like that every week (with an improved defence) and we’ll win the league at an absolute canter.
