Remember when folk on here had written off Hickey 15 minutes into his debut 😂

If he was at Man Utd right now he'd be starting. He's headed right to the top. His father has done a fantastic job with his moves so far. Hearts was a good grounding, bologna a tremendous move as he was thrown straight in there and played 40 times in Serie A and then a really clever move to Brentford who are terrifically run and coached. His next move probably for 30-40 million will be to a huge football club.

  2. Absolutely superb performance from Scotland. Brilliant from Clarke and his entire staff and squad. Tremendous achievement and gives us some really significant bonuses moving forward:

    1. Nations League A which will bring massive games, and better future play off chances/seedings especially for WC 2026.

    2. Pot 2 for Euro 2024 draw a week on Sunday. 2 qualify automatically from all 10 groups.

    3. Guaranteed play off spot if we don't qualify automatically.

On tonight given the absentees, quite a few guys who have been brought in from the cold and several guys including the outstanding Hickey (and whisper it Porteous who won't be at Hibs much longer) with little experience and the fact we were playing away from home in our 3rd high tempo match in a week, this is an outstanding result. So many positives; Hickey, Hendry, Porteous, Patterson all young players, the timeless Craig Gordon, consistently excellent McGregor, McGinn and Adams, McTominay magnificent in his correct position etc etc.

Oh and England, Wales and Republic Ireland all in Nations League B.

An absolutely brilliant night for Scottish football.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised with how quickly the SFA have cottoned on to the importance of the nations league. Our record is quite impressive.

I live in Essex and the EPL fanboys are absolutely seething the the club season being stopped for “glorified friendlies”

Yep. I think I'm right in saying we are the only team in Europe who hasn't lost a home Nations League match! The benefits are enormous to us and coupled with the increase in the Euros teams from 16-24 we really should never be missing being part of those for the foreseeable.

Kingsley must've pumped Clarke's Mrs to be behind Gallagher in the queue.

Happy enough with Doig, will be good experience for him.

Kingsley took a knock on Sunday as was never in contention to be picked because of it. With Neilson getting a knock for the U21's today it's probably a good thing.

People are mistaking the vocal gobshites who explicitly go out of their way to make a lot of noise on social media to your average run of the mill fans. I have four close friends who are Rangers fans and all of them are massive Scotland fans too - I went to every game with one of them for the best part of a decade, and he still goes with his dad (also a Rangers fan) now.

This is totally true. There is plenty to beat Rangers over and most of us love to do it on a fairly regularly basis but there are thousands of staunch Scotland fans who head to Ibrox on a Saturday. Utter nonsense to even suggest otherwise. One of the best things about watching Scotland home and abroad is how the club support (almost always) goes out the window. Just like we should proud as f**k as a small nation that more people attend matches weekend in weekend out per capita than any country in Europe.

For Sam Matterface's information, there won't be many, if any, Everton fans tuning into Scotland v Ukraine tonight.

25+ pages on the main Everton forum about the injury would suggest otherwise. In fact they've been raving about him so much recently I would hazard a guess that never have so many Everton fans watched a Scotland game!

Must say: that closing double-header has hallmark of another debacle in Georgia/glorious failure versus the top seed finish 😄!

Helpful to have Faroes last in March triple-header.

September triple-header looks tough especially Austria up last.

Austria do travel to Israel in game 2 of the September triple header though so that should be a much trickier game than Moldova at home for us.

The 6 best runners up will be at home in the first round of the playoffs though.

Just reading more about this and think you are correct so for the semi finals it’s home advantage to 6 best runners up and a draw to see who hosts the finals.

Am I right in thinking that, due to the imbalance in group sizes, results against the bottom seed (or lowest placed when the group is done, perhaps) in six team groups are ignored when deciding the best runners-up spots?

    9 minutes ago, Lurkst said:

That's usually how it works, I'd expect no difference this time.

Not this time. All 10 group winners qualify automatically. All 10 runners up go into the play offs plus the best 2 Nations league teams who don’t finish 1st or 2nd giving 12 teams in the play offs. They are spilt into 3 groups of 4 with semi finals and then a final. The 3 winners qualify to give the 13 UEFA spots in Qatar.

Austria are the 6th placed best Nations League side after France, Belgium, Italy, Spain and Wales so are an absolute shoe in for one of the 2 play off spots even if they don’t finish in the top 2 in our group.

Another draw where certain posters underestimate Israel.   It keeps happening.   You would have thought posters would learn.

I'd price up the group winners at:

    Denmark  2/1
    Israel   3/1
    Austria 7/2
    Scotland 4/1

The "scam" isn't working very well if it ends up giving Wales and Austria play-off places, is it?

If it ends up giving Wales and Austria play offs spots it means all the big boys have already qualified!!!! That's the exact point, it's designed to ensure none of them miss out.

  12. Another interesting thing to note is that Austria have a safety net for a play off place. They sit in 6th place in the Nations League failure to finish in the top 2 in your qualifying group, lets ensure all the big teams are there scam!!!

    France
    Belgium
    Italy
    Spain
    Wales
    Austria

There seems next to a 0% chance that those first 4 aren't 1st or 2nd in their respective groups which means that Austria will have a play off place whatever. Obviously their target will still be to win the group for automatic qualification but they may not be that motivated late in the campaign with a play off locked up already if automatic has gone. Therefore Austria at Hampden late next year might be what we want.

  13. It really is as good a draw as we could have hoped for. Looking at Denmark and Austria's Euro qualifying campaigns (they both made it automatically finishing 2nd to Switzerland and Poland in their groups) but both dropped points to teams who aren't as good as us. Denmark drew with Rep. Ireland twice and drew in Georgia and Austria lost 3 times including, ironically, to Israel (4-2) and in Latvia!  Obviously we know all about Israel but the fact remains we should be beating them and when you look at the Faroes and Moldova's records they lost 18 games out of 20 with a win each against the mighty Malta and Andorra. Great opportunity.

Just having a look at when these are played and it's very condensed qualification and very much during the season, no games in June 2021 for obvious reasons. The games in March could easily still see Covid issues and having everyone available and getting off to a good start, pre the Euros is going to be huge. I'd take a couple of 'easy' fixtures to get points on the board this season and preferably if there is a big game, one of Denmark or Austria is at home. Lets leave Israel until later next year after the recent fixtures against them.

The World Cup 2022 qualifiers are played:

    3 in March 2021
    3 in September 2021
    2 in October 2021
    2 in November 2021

Neil Doncaster being reported as saying that the league would be very difficult to complete if just one team was affected by players going down with coronavirus. A bit of an incentive for teams suffering a lousy season to get some exposure to the virus - pronto. I can almost hear the dry coughs and sniffles coming  from Tynecastle and Ibrox already!

  15. Looking in from the outside guys, I don't think that you have anything to fear from Falkirk or Rangers and though amazing as it is the latter really are entering the equation. IF and it is of course a big IF Rangers were to lose against us twice, tomorrow at Hibs and against both you and Falkirk they could be in big trouble. There is every reason to think you guys can take them in Dumfries and that they could lose to us twice and Hibs but can Falkirk go to Ibrox 2nd last match and beat them, I'm not so sure.

What I do know is that you shouldn't be worrying about Hearts motivation regardless of what happens tomorrow. I know that comment also goes for your match at Tynie next week but Neilson and Levein will want us continuing to play and score goals and there are a lot of people wanting us to hit the 100 goals for instance (we need 16 in 7). Today we equalled our best ever run of consecutive away wins (9) in our history so go to Ibrox looking to beat that and also beat our previous away run of undefeated away league games (18) so we have a lot to play for even if the title is in the bag. If Rangers need anything last game of the season at Tynecastle you can expect us to do everything to stop them.

Anyway, all the best, the vast majority of Hearts fans want to see you come up with us and certainly to see you in the play off scenario as you can beat either Hibs or Rangers if on your game meaning another season in the Championship for them.
